History / Poland and Polish Anti-Semitism, c. 1918-1939 [148]

Oh well that covers all the bases then, doesn't it? By that definition anyone who disagrees with a Jewish person about anything is automatically an anti Semite!

Travel / My holiday, Gdansk or Kaunus, Lithuania? Help me decide! [23]

Hipis, i'm sure Gydnia can't be that bad! Am sure i will find plenty to do and see.

Good luck. I went against the advice of my friend who lives there when I decided to visit the place. It's ok down by the harbour area and it's nice walking through the park and up to Kamienna Góra but I won't be going back there in a hurry. I'll be interested to see what you think of it when you get back :)

Travel / My holiday, Gdansk or Kaunus, Lithuania? Help me decide! [23]

There's nothing worth seeing in Gdynia, I wasted an afternoon of my life there which I'll never get back :( Oliwa is a nice suburb of Gdansk, that's worth a visit. There's a nice park there although it might be a little cold and bleak in October. When I was there last month the weather was glorious and it was ever so peaceful and relaxing. Can't help you with the food places. I tend to eat where ever it's cheapest.

Travel / Traveling to Poland from Turkey - trip suggestions? [5]

Well, as soon as you arrive in Poland you will meet people who live in Poland. They are called border security and they are very friendly people, always greet you with a smile and some nice jokes. If you are lucky and they like you they might let you in to the country or even invite you for dinner. This is even better if they are female ;) I am sure you will enjoy.

UK, Ireland / Crying Polish truck driver on British roads is Internet hit [269]

Have to agree with you on that one. I was out in a pub with my mate and overheard a group of Poles taking the **** out of other people in the bar, talking in Polish of course, and eventually they came round to making a few disparaging comments about me and my mate. They got the shock of their lives wehn I walked over to them and said "Cześć! Skąd jesteście w Polsce?"

Had a similar experience with a group of English football fans in Germany in 2006. I was sat outside a bar having a few beers with a load of my mates and we were chatting away in Polish and they were sat a couple of tables away mouthing off and throwing a few insults our way. They weren't expecting someone to give them a gobful back in a broad Yorkshire accent.

BTW I have never seen in any Polish TV show a scene where some foreigner would be ridiculed .

I have but they were ridiculing the Russians so that's ok ;)

News / What really happened at the Krakow restaurant? [53]

Unfortunately this isn't the first time this has happened in Krakow. There are other cases of restaurants that have refused to serve people on the basis of their ethnicity.

Unfortunately this happens in a lot of places in the world and not just Poland but hey, don't let that stop the chance to do a bit more Pole bashing.

Life / Wroclaw Stadium and the Queen gig. [20]

the only problem with queen is that they carry freddie wherever they go. he has been dead more than twenty years. it's time to move on.
many other bands have replaced vocalists without fuss.

When they reformed a few years ago with Paul Rogers as singer they were universally slated by the music press and a lot of die hard Queen fans. I saw them tour with Paul Rogers and I really enjoyed the gig as did most of the people there.

The problem is that Freddy was such an iconic figure that it would be impossible to replace him on a full time basis but Queen wasn't just Freddy, there were three other people in the band and they still have to earn a living. They can probably earn more money touring as Queen than they can doing other projects so I have no problem with them touring with another vocalist just as long as they don't turn into Freddy immitators, they have to be their own person.

Travel / My holiday, Gdansk or Kaunus, Lithuania? Help me decide! [23]

The people I go to watch Poland with support many different clubs in Poland including Legia. Club allegiances are usually put to one side when you go to support Poland otherwise it would be chaos ;D

It is a shame about that cathedral considering the one at the other end of the town looks so good.

Cat

A pity the area of the town around here is such a mess.

Law / How will a parking lot business do in Warsaw centrum? [6]

Do you mean central Warsaw? Or do you actually mean what is classed as Centrum ie the junction of Marsałkowska and Jerozolimskie? Either way, if you can find some empty land that is affordable to buy or rent just to turn into a car park I say good luck to you.

Travel / My holiday, Gdansk or Kaunus, Lithuania? Help me decide! [23]

It's a little bit more than one street to be fair, I asume you mean Vilnius Gatve, there's the square around the town hall which Vilnius Gatve leads to, Muitines Gatve leads from the other corner of the square into Kurpiu Gatve and both these streets are quite pleasant and of course thhere are a few smaller streets connecting them with Vilnius Gatve. If you walk from the bottom of the square past the seminary you come to what's left of the medieaval fortifications overlooking the river and of course there is a big, dilapidated brick cathedral there as well which looked like it was starting to be renovated when I was there last year. I agree it's not somewhere to base yourself for a few days. The only reason I was there was because Poland were playing a friendly with Lithuania and the only reason I'd go back would be if Poland played there again.

Travel / My holiday, Gdansk or Kaunus, Lithuania? Help me decide! [23]

I have been to Kaunas. Apart from a small, renovated old town area the rest of it is a dump. Agreed that Vilnius is a lot nicer but I'm not sure that it's worth spending 5 days there unless you want to use it as a base to go and see other places. I'd definitely recommend Gdansk. The old town is fantastic and Sopot is just a short train ride away. If you like old castles then Malbork is about an hour away on the train and is worth taking a day out of your schedule to see.

Genealogy / my Polish Grandfather in Hitler Youth? HOW? [65]

Does it give an enlistment date? From 1944 onwards when the Nazis realised they were going to lose the war they were desperate for new recruits to bolster their flagging numbers. Many people from other nations were forcibly conscripted into the German ranks.

Love / Polish Wedding Venue near Krakow [22]

Also, does it have to be a non religious ceremony/venue? There are other churches which aren't Catholic. krakow-info/religie.htm

News / SUNDAY WITHOUT MASS IN POLAND - Judaeo-leftist Wyborcza gloats [165]

I never said it wasn't of any significance. I get fed up of people crying "anti Semitism" everytime someone says something that a Jewish person disagrees with. It is actually possible to disagree with and have an opposing opinion without being anti Semitic, racist or anti anything else for that matter.

Love / Polish Wedding Venue near Krakow [22]

So ideally you need to find a hotel with space for 100 with a function room but the ceremony could be anywhere with a traditional Polish "feel" about it but with a nice dash of romance for such a special occasion? Does it have to be in the Kraków area? Have you looked at Wieliczka salt mine? I know there's a few chapels there and I know they do weddings but not sure if they'd do a civil ceremony.

News / SUNDAY WITHOUT MASS IN POLAND - Judaeo-leftist Wyborcza gloats [165]

Its obviously antisemitic to describe anything as Jewish owned because it implies that the owners are first and foremost Jewish rather than business people who happen to be Jewish

Don't see it myself. Anti Semitism is discrimination, prejudice or hatred towards Jews according to modern day definition of the word Semitic so simply describing a business as Jewish owned is not a statement of hatred nor does it imply prejudice or hatred. The only time I would define such a statement of ownership as being of an anti Semitic nature would be if it was spoken by someone who was already known for being anti Semitic eg David Duke.

News / SUNDAY WITHOUT MASS IN POLAND - Judaeo-leftist Wyborcza gloats [165]

I agree with delph, it makes no difference to me who owns what, I have better things to do with my time than research the ethnicity and religion of CEOs and major shareholders of large corporations. Now political allegiance, that's a different matter, I try and avoiding giving my money to those businesses who give huge financial donations to the British Conservative Party and the Republican party in the USA :D

News / SUNDAY WITHOUT MASS IN POLAND - Judaeo-leftist Wyborcza gloats [165]

Exactly; and PF will do little to nothing about the Anti Semitism,

PF does nothing about anti Polonism either. We have English, Irish, Scottish, German, Russian, even Norwegian polonophobes on here; would it be anti Semitic to say we even have Jewish polonophobes on here? Anyway, I digress, so, given the fact that this is supposed to be a forum to discuss all things Poland and Polish related and polonophobic posts are never removed, why do you think you are so special that you think that alleged anti Semitic posts or posters are removed?

Connotation? Sorry, I don't understand what you mean.

Even if we do, we're the head and not the tail again.

Forgive me if I'm wrong here but doesn't the "head" make the decisions and the tail does as the head decides? I have yet to see a tail that wagged the dog.

Polonius3:
Define anti-Semitism!

Singling out people who are Jews for special attention.

What kind of special attention? If it's derogatory and hate speech then I'd agree with you but if it's a fact that corporations, newspapers, film studios are owned by people of Jewish heritage who may also be practicing Jews then how can stating facts be classed as anti Semitic? If I say Israel is controlled by the Jews is that anti Semitic or am I stating a fact?
