Travel / English cigarettes - where to buy in Poland? [41]

Is it right next to the Lung Cancer Treatment Center?

That's of course down in Ursynów.

I notice that the big kiosk at Wolumen has plenty of British brands now.

Travel / English cigarettes - where to buy in Poland? [41]

Smoking

More on topic, the kiosk in Dw. Centralny (more or less opposite the basement entrance to Centrum LIM) had Rothmans and Regal the other day.

I thought Dębiński (pronounced fairly close to Dembinsky).

Antoni Wiwulski?

A thoroughly decent man and a seemly memorial.

Travel / Where to buy marihuana in Warsaw? [38]

Getting alcohol in the uk is so much harder than getting illegal drugs

Getting alcohol is pretty easy. You just walk into any shop that sells it and buy some.

And also legalising drugs makes it harder for kids to get them

Most importantly, it generates tax revenue and takes the supply chain out of the hands of organised crime.

UK, Ireland / Polish traffickers in the UK jailed for enslaving hundreds of their own people [58]

Don't look like gypsies to me either

No evidence that most of them are, not that it's relevant.

There is no shortage of scuzzy bottom feeder Poles eager to rip off their countrymen

Sadly no shortage at all. This seems to be true everywhere,

These crimes should never have happened, and appropriate sentences have been given by the courts.

The name (and story behind) this school is an interesting one. I couldn't find a photo displaying the name, however (makes it easy), the school's in Żdżary...

Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

two examples of English words adopted into the Polish language

It's a natural thing for languages to do. The only examples I dislike are 'tipsy' and 'sponsoring'.

That is why I am against all immigration to the US - from Europe included.

That's an odd thing for an immigrant from Europe to say.

Muslim immigration and how to fight it. An obsession

Agreed.

transgender bathrooms, Honduran plumbers and teachers pay in suburban Illinois

All issues (or non-issues) relating to another country, another continent.

there are more posts here about Muslims, gays, gun crime, Trumps wall etc. I

Agreed strongly. It (especially the obsession with immigration) lowers things. Some post extreme things to annoy, and threads go off topic. We could of course ignore them, however trolls hate being ignored and post inflammatory stuff to get a reaction.

bring up some alt right or Moscow talking point within 5 posts,

In a few threads this happens in fewer than 5 posts...

News / LGBT hate speech to be banned in Poland [208]

adjective

It's an adjective, sometimes (though only sometimes) used badly as a noun.

Is "She's gay." acceptable in the UK?

Yes, it's acceptable usage.

News / LGBT hate speech to be banned in Poland [208]

Is gay still an adjective?

Yes. However saying 'a gay' is incorrectly using it as a noun.

lesbian

Of course she could be a Lesbian lesbian.

There are gay bars in Krakow.

Quite a few, and in all other larger Polish cities (and a few smaller ones). Although new ones are opening, on the whole gay bars are a declining phenomenon; the younger generation prefer to go out to mainstream bars and clubs.

News / Schools in Poland to strike tomorrow [235]

how many plumbers or electricians in UK are so highly educated?

A fair few, and of course being well-educated isn't the same as being highly-educated...

Fortunately the education system works well without people who 'just quit'. As for sacking strikers, very fortunately, we aren't in America...

but let's be honest they don't tend to have masters degree

We'll find more and more with degrees, or good pre-18 education.

Of course it's in the interest of some politicians (PiS, the Tories etc) that the lower orders stay uneducated ;-)

Life / 3 year old special needs child, moving to Krakow what options are there? [6]

are there government programs for special needs kids in English?

There are many special needs programmes provided by the state; they are free, and not in English as such, however there will certainly be staff who speak English,. You should speak to your future employer about this; their HR department mey be able to provide some guidance.

You should, by the way, take the comment above with a pinch of salt.

Poland does have a strong state education and care sector; it is all provided by the government and is of a good standard; you may be surprised at the high quality There's also no reason why your spouse (if they speak English or Polish and have marketable skills) should not find a job.

The salary (assuming it's net) is more than duble the national median salary.

preferring trade schools for their children (especially their sons), and foregoing a traditional liberal arts education.

Basically trained drones, rather than educated citizens.

Of course some in Poland would probably prefer the world to be a poorer place.

Naturally; part of the long game. Hopefully it will pay off and the floating voters will desert PiS in droves.
