Travel / DRIVING - CB RADIOS AND THE "PSY" aka - COPS - in Poland [12]

thanks for smartphone app - will look into that :)

but ... (and call me old fashioned here) in this age of smartphones apps. facecrack etc etc.... I like the ethereal nature of CB radio with the sqwack and cackle of imperfect communication - signals mixed... its awesome !

krecik - thanks for links (my polish not that good though) what's the connection with CB radio here? did he listen in to avoid cops catching him for awhile?

Law / Selling a car without putting it in your name - Multiple Umowas - what's the deal? [25]

Very common practice in Poland for people to sell a car that is not registered in their name. They have Umowa from when they bought the car, and then sign a new one to you, saying they sold it.

They have never officially registered the car themselves.

What is the law regarding this? I know it is very common practice, but are they liable at some point to pay taxes on the purchase? or a fine for not registering it?

Law / What documents do I need to register a car in my name in Poland? [18]

Anyhow, does anybody know where I can find my Local Gmina office if I live in Kazimierz in Krakow?

it is near Rondo Mogilskie - just south of it (on right side of road) I forget exact address. You can register there as a resident, you can also register a vehicle there (be prepared to wait, one day we went - 50 people before us...

i'm in the same spot (sick of putting vehicles in my girlfriend's name)... I have a 'meldunek' I believe but they never put my home address on it!!!

does it matter or not if I have an address on this or not to register a car? only docs I have are meldunek + UK passport.

Travel / Abandoned / Derelict places in Poland to visit [22]

Near Wisla stadium (north of it) walking along the park "Blonia" (with polish 'L') there is a very cool abandoned sports facility with an olympic sized pool :) not a train station but very kewl and right in central krakow

tops for me though is the abandoned 'insane asylum' haha in Szczawnica about 2 hour drive from krakow. Try to say that name 3 times real fast.

there is also another cool abandoned mental institution near Katowice in the suburbs.. sorry I can't remember the name now.

happy hunting though - tons of abandoned buildings in PL :D

post if you find some other cool spots

USA, Canada / Best way to send thousands of dollars to Poland into a bank account. Paying a bill. [6]

I would agree. Deutsche Bank is great too because they have virtual CAD accounts. It cost me $50 back in Canada for my dad to wire money here.

Keep in mind a few things:

- Someone will need a Power of Attorney over your Canadian accounts back home if you want to physically be in Poland and receive the money.

-DB charges 250zl (I believe) each transfer out of the account to other banks

-The Kantor with the best exchange rate for me could only accept 20k CAD per day or something, so I would have had to transfer multiple times to his Raiefhausen bank to get the money converted to PLN.

Travel / DRIVING - CB RADIOS AND THE "PSY" aka - COPS - in Poland [12]

Picked up a new toy recently and it came with a CB radio ;)

what exactly is the deal with these? I would say... 20-30% ..maybe more of driver's have one. I know it is to warn each other about cops which is really kewl.

Any good channel recommendations or other tips? I got a bit of chatter on 18 and 19 but quality quite low (maybe its my CB) or just a night drive with few people out there

Law / DEALERS Control the markets - Used Vehicles - Cars, Bikes, etc in Poland [22]

I think the communist history definitely has a lot to do with it.

Another funny thing I have noticed (maybe you have too...) is that Poles rarely reply to SMS messages

I will send something in Polish like "I want to buy your car! I have cash, when can I see it?" and they don't reply haha Do they want to sell it or not? wtfff

truly odd culture...

..but god bless the stunningly beautiful women, dirt cheap food, and fun drinking culture :)

Law / DEALERS Control the markets - Used Vehicles - Cars, Bikes, etc in Poland [22]

haha that was going to be the title of my other thread! I don't know if it dates back to communism and people just having things... but seems like the majorite don't 'get' capitalism and the free market.

its quite common to see houses, bikes, cars, etc.. for sale for several months as the owner stubbonly refused to lower price.

I agree with the others. what's the deal on buying a car in Germany? a pain in the... or easy to do? I have heard about 1000zl fees to register it

Law / DEALERS Control the markets - Used Vehicles - Cars, Bikes, etc in Poland [22]

has anyone else noticed that dealers "auto handlers" comis control the used markets on vehicles? Have been shopping for a car and bike lately and its frustrating.

I would say without exageration that 80... 90% of the "Private" sales of vehicles are guys that are selling multiple ones, or have just bought the car.

It would be nice to just deal with private, honest sellers... quite frustrating

anyone else have similar experiences?

Life / Driving Offences in Poland - How Fast can you go without being arrested? ;) [56]

What are the Polish laws regarding speeding? At what point will they arrest you on the spot or impound your car? Is it always a cash fine for foreigners or points off license? etc

I only ask because a friend of mine ;) was stopped last week for speeding - 90km/h in a 50 zone / breezing through an 'orange' traffic light turning red. Cop super nice and loved his attempt at Polish. After breathalizing him and a friendly chat he told him that road had no more police on it and to "enjoy your new car" :) amazing.

he was lucky that time but my understanding is that its 100zl for each 10km/h you are over the limit - correct?

so if i'm caught doing 200km/h in a 120km/h zone I will pay 800zl fine??? At what point does it become more than just a speeding offence? I know it can normally be street racing, dangerous driving etc etc.

Also - are radar detectors legal in Poland? I have heard a lot of the fixed speed cameras don't work, but of course the cop this time was using normal handheld radar gun.

Work / Teaching at a Polish University - PHD required? or being a foreigner enough ;) [45]

Many academics have other jobs. I know one who is also a security guard at a factory.

Wow haha hmmm maybe I should just move back to Canada where I was earning $75 / hour (200zl / hour), made about 9000zl a month (for a higher book time of hours) and worked maybe 5 hours a week...

..but Poland has its charms - so its worth living here ;)

These numbers people are quoting still seem shockingly low. I find it hard to believe someone would work 10 or 14 hour days for 'chump change'

Private schools and colleges must pay more $$$ to foreigners.

Life / Sewer smell in Bathroom - PLUMBING CODE - P TRAP ?? [4]

mild sewer gas like smell in my bathroom. Toilet has water in it so no gas from there.

My question is regarding the Sink and bathtub " P-traps" what is the plumbing code in Poland regarding these? any links with photos you can provide? Looking at my sink trap It looks like no complete water barrier so that may be the problem. Bath venting appears to be correct.

Also what kind of plastic is the white drain plastic? I'm curious - north american standard for drains is black ABS

News / Poland liberalizes drug laws in effort to focus on treatment [35]

Merged: DRUG LAWS & MARIJUANA - Cheech and Chong - what's the deal?

i have a friend of a friend (haha yes really) who smokes marijuana. I'm not super anti-drugs but I don't use them.. I also don't want to be arrested by association with these "friends" say at a party or whatever.

Heard Poland has very strict laws with respect to Marijuana possession including jail time even for small amounts - is this true? what is the current situation?
