What documents do I need to register a car in my name in Poland?

Hi,

I have been living in Poland for several years now. I will be purchasing a car here in Poland later this week. I have a Pesel number and I thought this would be enough when I go to the transport department. But now I start to doubt, I read a blog that says I need to bring my ''tymczasowe zameldowanie'', and to be honest I have no idea what is this, and If I ever fill it out.

Could someone perhaps help me what I might need to do?

They mean your 'maldunek', which is the little slip of paper you get from the gmina office to prove that you have registered as living where you live.

Your car registration will only be valid for as long as your maldunek is valid.

You need to get it from your gmina. If you rent, your landlord needs to sign it.

It is not a small handfilled slip anymore,rather a full page printer printed document now for last 5 years or so.

It also is not a "maldunek" but "meldunek".
If you have a Pesel, you should have a meldunek as well - as fas as I know they are interconnected.
And as the last poster wrote... I never heard of a meldunek being a handwritten piece of paper. Absurd.

Since my Company got my Pesel number for me I am not sure that I have such a thing.

I said hand filled piece of small printed form not a handwritten one.....as I have a few when I use to visit poland in early 2000s and stamped as well.Even now they are stamped and signed.

I can't actually remember what the last one I got looked like, I was too utterly ****** off with the shambles of the car registration system (specifically why other EU citizens are discriminated against). However the one before that, which would have been five years before, was most certainly a hand-filled passport sized slip of paper.


It was on a printed form but with the spaces filled by hand.


In a city you'll want your local urzad dzielnicy. Have a look at the map here:

it is near Rondo Mogilskie - just south of it (on right side of road) I forget exact address. You can register there as a resident, you can also register a vehicle there (be prepared to wait, one day we went - 50 people before us...

i'm in the same spot (sick of putting vehicles in my girlfriend's name)... I have a 'meldunek' I believe but they never put my home address on it!!!

does it matter or not if I have an address on this or not to register a car? only docs I have are meldunek + UK passport.

I'm an EU citizen living in Poland for 3,5 years. I am buying a car soon and I wanted to ask if anyone knows what documents will the registration office ask for me in order to register a new car.

Apart from the documents that I will get from the dealership, what else do I need? I have a zameldowania cudzoziemca na pobyt czasowy until 2017. Will that do?

Yes, but with that your registration will only be good until 2017, and in 2017 you will need to pay to re-register your car. I'd strongly suggest that you get a new confirmation of right to reside in Poland (from your local foreigners office) and with that get a new maldunek which is valid for five years.

Thanks Harry. What if I my Polish girlfriend would be listed as owner and I appeared as co-owner on the registration? Would that get us a permanent registration?

a) I'm not sure but if I had to guess I'd say that it wouldn't work (you can't legal own a car unless you have an address to register it at).

b) Don't take this the wrong way, but it's not unheard of for foreign men to later regret putting things in the name of their Polish girlfriend/wife 'because the paperwork will be easier that way'.

I read that the need to register your address in poland will be scrapped in Jan 2016, so i am assuming that you will no longer have a meldunek or wharever its called, Does anyone know anymore about this and how it will effect car registration in future.?

Any more news on right hand drive cars, now that europe has told poland to allow registration

Expect many more overtaking accidents to add to the already dismal figures.

Latest news is that it will be Jan 2018, not Jan 2016. Anyway, what's basically happening is that there will be a system of voluntary registration linked to the PESEL number. So it will still exist, the only difference is that the bureaucracy associated with the meldunek will be scrapped and replaced with a very simple declaration of "I live here". When you go to register the car, they'll simply check that the address you provide matches the one on file.

For those foreigners without a PESEL, their passport/ID number will be used instead.
