Study / Times Higher Education rankings 2012 Poland's top universities at end! [93]

Doesn't work like that nowadays - university entry is all based on publicly accessible points schemes.

This was only 2 years ago, she is in her 3rd yr now.

The wszysza szkola system cracks me up too. Full of ppl with not enough points to enter a proper educational establishment

Love / English girl moving to Poland with my Polish boyfriend for the first time [69]

So for around 10 hours a week you can earn 1400zlt amonth after tax. What is an ok wage.

I dont know where in Poland you live but 1400 is not even an OK wage. Here in Trojmiasto you'd struggle to live on that, which I suspect is the same in all of the other major cities.

Life / The two sides of the Poles: friendly and honest / saying behind ones back [15]

I dont know if anyone else has experienced this or just me but I have found that when I didn't speak Polish I had the typical tourist view of Polish people, friendly, warm and open. Then I learnt Polish and suddnely I was able to understand what these same people were saying behind ones back. The things I have heard them say about ppl who are their friends I dont want to repeat. Maybe they said the same things before but I just didn't understand. I really believe that a person has to live in the country for a while and know the language to see the real side of this place.

Anyone else had the same experience?

Life / Grass is always greener? Poland experience. [69]

When you compare Warsaw and Krakow for culture WAW beats KRK hands down, superior museums, superior art scene, superior theater, superior restaurants and much better quality of life for the family. Ok so KRK is cheaper, but s that a reason to live there only?

Even all that is crap comapred to the west though. There is not much really in terms of culture in Poland

Life / Grass is always greener? Poland experience. [69]

Not my case. Since i moved to Krakow i have manage to create in less than a year what i never managed to do in Germany in 4.
It really depends how motivated you are. Moving to a different country is difficult per se. Poland has its problems but the opportunities are endless.

You really are one of the rarities though. I too have my own business here in the field of corporate entertainment and have worked hard to build it. I couldn't have done it though without the help of my polish wife. There are opportunities here but you need to work harder than most places to take advantage of them.

Life / Grass is always greener? Poland experience. [69]

I dont have much use for saving money. I like to earn it instead

Wait until you move here, you WILL find teaching your only option. No matter what your big ideas are, the reality is different.

UK, Ireland / What's the best Polish restaurant in London? [26]

Polish food is basic and tasty, it cant be made posh, it should be made in some grandmother's kitchen. An attempt at making Polish food to Michelin standards is gonna fall down im afraid

Law / Real wages drop in Poland [28]

Me too, but in reality, people who book language classes through Groupon won't last. Language schools will get roughly 50% of what students pay Groupon - it's totally unsustainable.

But unfortunately in a small city like Gdansk, people don't care about quality, price is all that matters. The people who attend these classes don't know any different and they are happy to be rammed in a classroom with photocopied textbooks.

Law / Real wages drop in Poland [28]

Ive heard that groupon is killing the language market here in Gdansk. A friend of mine worked for a school in Gdansk where there were 19 students in the class, all group on so they crammed as many in as possible. FOr that, he was getting 35 zl an hour. Luckily I work in an industry where groupon cant go

News / PKP buys Alstrom Pendolino trains for € 665 million [60]

Something that's worth pointing out - with the Pendolino trains, they can tilt around corners - so it might be possible to increase the track speed without much work at all.

Unfortunately PKP didnt opt for this feature as written in the above article:

"The trainsets of 7 cars each will be based on Alstom's standard New Pendolino platform. In line with the customer's specifications, they will not integrate the tilting system".

Life / Poles and the temperatures they heat their homes [36]

I have found myself sleeping on a hammock on our terrace as the wife gets cold very easily. We have a sensor system in my home where if the temperature drops below 16 degrees the radiators come on. I cant seem to remove this function.

News / Beer and cycling - it's time for Poles to act [46]

No they can't - scooters can only be driven with a full car licence or cat. A (or - soon to be cat AM too).

So how can 14 - 16 yr olds drive them then??? Please dont tell me they cant, my nephew here has one and he is 15

News / Beer and cycling - it's time for Poles to act [46]

The funniest thing for me is that they can take someone's driving licence for riding drunk on a bike but then they can get on a scooter and drive it without a licence. Makes no sense really
