News / Krystyna Pawłowicz and the 'marsz szmata' (slut walk) [52]

I think that you are adult enough to understand that the world does not turn around you, crikey, I am 18 and I know it already Oo, sorry if I haven't given all the information on a silver dish! I don't have time for such idiocy, if you are not interested in seeing the truth that is layd before you then fine live in your illusion of rainbow coloured Poland, and the hateful sect of Kaczystan and Ciemnogrod :)

You don't have time to provide evidence that Anna Grodzka used to be an SB agent, yet you had time to make the claim?

What about your parents? Were they SB agents too? Is that why you now live in the UK?

Morally-wise, an ex-SB agent cannot be a nicer guy/girl/it than a professor Pawlowicz.

Would you like to provide proof for your claim that she's an ex-SB agent?

Sejm is becoming a big circus nowadays unfortunately...

It was a big circus for years. Don't you know the history of the Commonwealth?

History / Zygmunt Gorgolewski- the architect of the Opera House in Lwów [47]

I believe there is a rule about "no blanket statements".

Are Poles more adaptable at learning Germanic languages than Ukrainians are at learning Polish, a similar Slavic language, or is this just a poor excuse for the ethnic violence that happened in WWII?

Seems to me that this rule has been broken.

Grodzka is far more attractive than Pawłowicz, right?

I dunno Polonius, you're the one that attended the slut walk, not us. I wonder if you told them to their face that they deserve to be raped, or if we should bring it to their attention?

It is interesting that you choose to focus on physical features.

Ukrainians

For what it's worth, relations between Poles and Ukrainians are just fine nowadays. No need for foreigners to interfere.

We all know what happened in Lwów, we all know what happened in WW2 - how about just leaving it be and focus on how great relations are nowadays between the people?

History / A map of the 2nd Republic - help? [5]

I'm trying to find either a very very high resolution map of the II RP or something similar to Google Maps - can anyone help?

I'm specifically trying to find a good map showing the borders of Wielkopolska then - I'd like to go and see if there are any traces of the former border with Germany.

However victim irresponsible behaviour can contribute to one become a victim. One of which is a dress code.

Is there a dress code on the streets of Poland? I wasn't aware that there was.

The Same circles who that they are a voice of reason and enlightenment, are strangely resistant to reason and empiric evidence.

Reason? How can there ever be reason for rape?

Dressing like slut and walking about naked is irresponsible behavior and one which may end in tears.

Know many people who walk around naked, do you?

After all there are not movement that are advertising to people to dress smartly wear all their jewelery and flout about wads of cash especially in the places of a bad repute.

They've got as much right to do that as they have to dress how they like.

Fortunately, I suspect Polonius will have to answer for his statement here.

News / Krystyna Pawłowicz and the 'marsz szmata' (slut walk) [52]

Anyone see or hear about Warsaw's Marsz Szmat (literally March of the Rags) last week?

I'm surprised you didn't go to "report" on the matter.

? It was a motley, ragtag collection of clad and semi-clad sluts, tramps, tarts, gigolos, transvestites and other 'savoury' types trying to prove that a scantily, provacatively dressed and sluttuily made-up female lurking about in bad neighbourhoods bears no responsibiltiy for getting raped.

Oh dear Polonius, you seem to be saying that women bear responsibility for being raped. That's pretty disgusting, even for an old man like yourself.

It's only the nasty macho testosterone thugs that are to blame for succumbing to temptation.

How can a female ever be blamed for being raped?

Fortunately, we are able to hold such statements to account on PF.

News / Poland's Organized Crime [58]

Go to small village discos like at Lutol in western Poland. They fight each other in groups with wooden two by fours.

What's new there? Small village discos in any country will have morons fighting each other.

Or watch any soccer hooligan/ultra vids and youll see the same thing.

Yes, because Poland is so unique for having football fans fight each other.

I got assaulted in Lubsko the first night I wentthere last december simply because some girl that was. With a group of guys wanted to be with me and not them and. They gotjelous and started treating her like theyre property.

You went to a small village, took their girl and wondered why you got a beating? Not very bright, are you?

News / Poland's Organized Crime [58]

I think you should start writing crime fiction, you'd be very good at it!

Also there are Polish gangs righting each other with chains and bats over controls of discos or clubs. Its hectic as fuk. Polaks really get down and dirty with their hands (no guns needed for them).

I've been to many clubs and never saw so much as a bat, let alone knives.

You really do need to stop dreaming when posting on here.

in Warsaw there are stabbings and best downs all the time.

I've been to Warsaw many times and never saw a stabbing or a beatdown.

Seen many loud mouthed Americans speaking complete nonsense, however.

Study / Poligloci Language School...Anybody Heard Of Them...? [8]

Ooo!!!

yes :)

I can tell you to steer well clear. I've had dealings with them professionally, and they are dreadfully unprofessional. The company is owned by a Polish woman, but in reality is run by a Frenchman by the name of Michel. You can expect little to nothing in the way of support, and they will quite happy play stupid games with you (such as telling you that classes are cancelled, but in reality, they cancelled the classes on your behalf for some random reason). They will also pay late if they want to play games.

I only cooperated with them for a few months (and only for two classes a week), but their behaviour was nothing short of unprofessional. Michel is very open about how

does business (unprofessionally), claiming that "this is how it is done in Poland". You can also expect them to take no interest in the classes themselves, and our cooperation came to an end after I received a very interesting phone call from Michel, claiming that they were firing me because the students were unhappy. Yet he took no interest throughout the several months - and the complaints he listed weren't based on reality in the slightest.

Steer clear - there are many complaints online about them too.

ang.pl/forum/szkoly-jezykowe/16990#post130102

Take a read of this entire thread - Michel is not a sane man.

Life / First communion - it's that time of year again in Poland! [109]

My first communion was a low cost event. All the kids wore the same thing and the post-church celebrations either took place at home with friends/family or at a hall.

Yes. How long ago was that?

Showing off is much more noticeable in Poland than in Canada. I could go on and on with the examples.

Perhaps because they finally have the ability to have it, so they're getting it?

While you were sat in your safe, wealthy Western country, Poles had very little. Can you blame them?

This is her. Yuck! She looks like the typical slut walk chick.

Oh dear. You really should engage your brain before posting.

I wonder what these 2 will think of their participation in the slut walk in 20 years.

I imagine they'll be proud that they stood up for themselves rather than posting disgraceful chauvinist things on internet forums.

I think the slut walk is strange and don't see how it benefits women. I saw the slut walk in toronto and it appeared as though 99% of the participants were lesbians and/or hardcore man-hating feminists. Most of my female co-workers were embarrassed and not supportive of this initiative.

You went to watch, did you?

Study / Tell me about Collegium Civitas (Warsaw)! [34]

Sad truth is, that for many job positions in Poland graduates of private schools are not even invited for interviews.

I know of at least three big Polish companies that have a blanket policy on this - degree from a private university and your CV goes straight in the bin, unless you're being headhunted. The problems with grades being bought is so high in these universities that it simply doesn't make sense to trust them.

delphiandomine, you seem bitter.

No, truthful.

At any rate, you're wrong on most of your assumptions. Some are ridiculous so I will ignore those.

Oh, I'm certainly not. You bought a cheap education, nothing else.

I doubt someone who spells recognize with a "s" would know what was required of American students. When my diploma was being nostrified, I was explicitly told by the office on Jerzolomiskie that it needed to be recognized throughout the States. You are correct (in this instance) that I neglect to mention the part where the statement must also permit you to go on to post-secondary studies.

I suggest you read the relevant law on the nostrification process to find out exactly what it says.

As for the fact that I use an "s" rather than "z" is meaningless - why wouldn't I know about the nostrification process?

I don't believe it is right to classify CC's library as poor. It's a smart business decision. Foreigners pay a fraction of the tuition that they would at UW and can use BUW resources by only purchasing a library card for a few zloty. Plus, anyone can also use books at the PISM library for free. So, I believe that it's a great decision not to duplicate resources that students can get cheaply elsewhere. Moreover, I received instruction from some UW and College of Europe - Natolin's best professors without dropping 5,000 EUR on tuition.

A great decision? No, it's a dreadful decision and shows that it's a joke of an educational school. Quite normal for private schools, however.

As for receiving instruction from them - really, knowing quite a few people who teach in such universities, I imagine they had similar contempt for you. In Poland, it's not exactly a secret that these schools exist to provide papers for people that were simply too stupid to get into the real universities. No-one serious in Poland takes these schools seriously - the diplomas just aren't worth the paper that they're written on.

The cheating thing is universal. It is probably worse at public schools here and it's also present within the teaching staff at public institutions. My girlfriend recently purchssed three books by professor from UW only to learn that he plagarizes 80% of his own work in each of the books. So the fact that UW ranks somewhere in the top 500 holds no water for me, especially if you are referring to the Shanghai Rankings which have been criticized for the methodology employed.

It's irrelevant - the UW is well known in Poland and scores highly internationally. CC is...well...unheard of.

My assessment still stands. For a school that is only 13 years old, has a small student body, and has done well enough by having students move on to even better schools (IU - Bloomington, for example), it is a good option.

It is a good option if you want a worthless piece of paper that people in Poland will openly laugh at - yes.

It is a dreadful option for anyone that wants a reputable, serious education.

Study / Tell me about Collegium Civitas (Warsaw)! [34]

Turns out that the foreign ambassador and highly respected professors who reviewed my thesis was so impressed by it that he gave me the first 5+ in his several decades of teaching at UW and other schools.

So they told you. The truth is probably rather different.

The faculty is supposedly better and friendlier than the faculty at any other school in Poland.

This isn't quite correct. It is required that you have a statement that says that the diploma allows you to apply for university entry in the United States, not that it is recognised in the United States. Or you can get the statement from the Polish embassy in the United States, too.

Within the last two years, the school has upgraded its computer room, which used to populated by Windows 95 desktops (joking) to what I think are large, touchscreen computers.

Sounds pretty poor - proper universities have huge libraries in Poland. I'm familiar with the UAM library, and that must have well over 20,000 books available as well as many English language resources.

Ultimately, the worse part of the school was some of the other students. Many of them felt entitled to great grades despite not doing the work required and would argue with the professors. Others, would go out of their way to cheat on every single exam, much to my chagrin.

It's a private university in Poland. Cheating would be expected by both students and professors alike. Ten minutes research online would tell you this.

If you have the motivation to work, then, like at any college or university, its worth the money, especially considering that its relatively cheap (CC is less expensive for foreigners to attend than it is for them to attend the University of Warsaw).

And far less reputable. UW is one of the top 500 universities in the world - CC isn't.

I think you've been out of Poland far too long if you think that Piotr i Pawel is out of reach for most people.

There are three bakeries close to where I live, all of which are open at ridiculous hours to sell all sorts of interesting products at a very good price.

Absolutely. For instance, getting old of some of the old formula for Jack3d (if it hasn't been banned in Poland yet) would sell for a massive profit here.

Many big name products simply aren't on the market here, or are available at a hideous cost as it's all imported.

History / Alexander the Great - Macedonski. Poland connection? [254]

Dude, Poland didn't call itself Magdeburg,Morava or anything else. And didn't name any airports after some German/Czech/Russian/Ukrainian king :D :D.

But they certainly built up a certain mythology that persists to this day. It wasn't an accident that the "Miracle of the Vistula" was called that, and Pilsudski certainly didn't do much to stop the cult forming around him.

Here I have to agree with you. Seriously.

Macedonia is really just a small piece of centuries of childish stupidity. Nothing is more stupid than the Serbian obsession with Kosovo Polje though.

History / Alexander the Great - Macedonski. Poland connection? [254]

you have strange perception of normality

It's entirely normal for a new country that found itself surrounded by hostile neighbours. Poland between the wars wasn't much different.

You are saying that Greeks argue about the name Macedonia because of Serbia? Why not because of Germany?

Originally, yes - Serbia reluctantly let Macedonia go (because there were barely any Serbs to agitate there, and no historical connection) - but still, the Greeks were very much on the side of Serbia at that time.

Quarrel weather it's dialect or not has no sense. Enough to say that it's nearly the same language. And weather it has different name or is called dialect it's only political matter.

It's irrelevant - Macedonian has been recognised as a language for many years. Who are you (or I, or anyone) to deny them the right to call their language what they want?

Then again, pathetic childishness is nothing new in the Balkans.

History / Alexander the Great - Macedonski. Poland connection? [254]

Now think for a moment if there was a country called Republic of Malopolska, bordering Poland, pretending to have nothing to do with polish region in south of Poland.

The problem is that they didn't do any of this stuff in the beginning - it's very much a reaction to the behaviour of Greece towards them. The more that Greece acted like a spoilt child, the more that they built up the cult of Alexander which strengthened their sense of nationhood. Entirely normal.

Macedonian isn't a dialect of Bulgarian - in fact, that's the normal offensive thing used towards them. Some dialects may be similar to Bulgarian, but that's no different to how people in Cieszyn speak a similar dialect to those in Cesky Tesin.

Of course, the real reason for the Greek problem with Macedonia has everything to do with Greece and her support of Serbia...

History / Alexander the Great - Macedonski. Poland connection? [254]

Fast forward into the future - to a time when there are political issues in the balkans. There is a province of modern Greece called Macedonia. There is also a very new state called Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (usually abbreviated to FYROM). The two countries are arguing over the name Macedonia.

Which is ridiculously childish on the part of Greece - the EU should have told Greece that if they wanted the bailout money, they had to drop their objection to the name of the country. The Greek attitude towards Macedonia has been nothing short of pathetic - and the Macedonians are having a field day creating an entire cult around Alexander!

Law / Polish Citizenship for a foreigner whose parents was born in Poland [174]

My father is from Poland

And do you speak Polish at all?

First things first, there are unlikely to be such a thing as "full blooded Polish" given the years of intermixing between many different people in what is now called Poland.

Secondly, when did your grandparents obtain American citizenship?

Thirdly, when did he gain American citizenship?
