Travel / Bialystok or... some other place in Poland. [8]

Romekkk, you are clearly a man of rare discernment and taste. Białystok has the best of both worlds: tradition and modernity. Nevertheless, there's a lot more to see in Poland.Try any of the mountainous areas; they're all beautiful. Or the lakes. I'd avoid the seaside if I were Australian! If you must return to B.Stok, make sure you visit Białowieża forest.

Travel / Is it safe to travel to Poland? [194]

anumehta, no doubt your e-mail is now pinned to the office wall, where everyone can have a good laugh at it. Sounds like you didn't like Roland anyway, so it's win-win.

News / Polish priest sacked by Vatican for being openly gay [54]

InPolska +1 The current pope is showing unprecedented levels of love and tolerance. The conservatives in the RC Church must be fuming. As for the American protestants, the pope is the Antichrist anyway.

Life / Spanish engineering student is moving to Bialystok - cost of life and information about the city. [38]

if not cold, then humid, gloomy and foggy from November.

Jardinero, I don't know how extensive your experience of living in Białystok is, but what you describe is not something I recognise, apart from the cold. Why should this region be any more humid, gloomy or foggy than Warsaw, which is two hours west? I can't remember the last time I saw fog in the city. As for gloomy, it's gloomy when it's cloudy, and the region doesn't get any more cloud than anywhere else in Poland. In fact, due to the better atmospheric conditions here, autumn and winter are a lot brighter than in bigger cities.

Manuel just needs to go shopping for warm clothing when it gets cold. There's no bad weather; just bad clothes.

Work / Cost of living in Lodz, is 2450-6400 PLN salary enough? [25]

Is 2450 PLN a good net salary to live in Lodz? (taking in consideration rent, food, internet connection, nightlife)

Your "nightlife" will consist mainly of masturbation.

This deserves some kind of forum award.

Law / Electronic signature for my Polish citizenship? [40]

That's undoubtedly true, but in the case of people who are citizens of Poland and another place it appears that using, e.g. a British passport in Poland could, at least in theory, cause problems at the border. It only takes one sniffy border guard to turn a holiday into a nightmare.

You said earlier that the company were going to find you a place. You should leave the problem in their hands. 2000 PLN is very little money. If you rent in the private sector, you are going to spend everything on accommodation. If you were here, you might be able to find a flat share with students, but from Spain this would be very difficult to organise. The company knows they are paying peanuts. If they want you, they'll find something.

the most boring, provincial and depressing city for size in Poland

Białystok may not have as many clubs, museums, theatres, etc. as the bigger cities, but boring? Students rate it as a good place to live and study. It has lots of clubs, with regular student nights, well-regarded theatres, two multiplex cinemas, a brand new opera house (I'm going to 'Carmen' later this month), a fine professional philharmonic orchestra, a good selection of restaurants and cafes, and plenty of green spaces. When young people do get bored with the city, Warsaw is a couple of hours away, and when they've finished upgrading the track (next year?) the journey will be just over an hour. For its size Białystok is not a bad place. The most important thing is for Manuel to find friends. Let's face it, Las Vegas would be boring if you're alone.

Real Estate / EU national wanting to move and buy a house in Poland [41]

For some reason i can't give the apples away, Poland is awash with Apples.

AFAIK Poland is the biggest producer of apple juice in Europe. There should be a place near you that buys apples. We used to have a massive old apple tree that fruited every other year. We used to sell literally tons of apples to a place in town.

logs on the fire. Don't use pine. Absolutely useless in terms of calories,

All woods have more or less the same calorific value. It seems counter-intuitive, but it's true. The difference is in the rate of burn. Hardwood is great, but if you want to flash up the furnace for some hot water in summer, it's no good. When I bought my place I cut down lots of trees. Some were 50+ year-old willows, which are basically air once dried out. A real pain in the neck, but if you want a fast-burning fire, willow or pine are good. We burn pine and birch in our furnace (plus coal), and alder and birch in our fireplace. We've got some apple and ash for a slow burn, but we save that for long cosy winter nights.

UK, Ireland / Brutal stabbing, Poles arrested [36]

You were a toddler back then

There are plenty of people around who weren't. Ask any of them and they'll tell you about the hooliganism, violence and police indifference that were rife in those days. Poland is much more civil now. That doesn't sound right to those who have the "Poland is going to hell in a handcart" attitude, but it happens to be true.

Moon landings, six manned landings in fact.

equally contested lunar mission of '69

None of the landings are contested at all, except by the usual noisy fools.

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

I have to admit that, like Smurf, something inside me wants a PiS victory. When last in power the ducks and their appalling coalition partners made such a cluster-duck that it was often as amusing as it was tragic. Nevertheless, you shouldn't count your chickens before they hatch. There's only one poll that counts, and if that poll goes in faour of PO, one Pol is in for some unmerciful ribbing.

News / Poles v Tusk's school 'reform' [58]

In end of year writing exams all papers are checked and graded by two people. For the other exams the ss' index number is on the paper, not the name, reducing the possibility of you-know-what.

g, I am not an ex-pat. I am a citizen.

News / Poles v Tusk's school 'reform' [58]

They whole thing with universities is off-topic here really, just some "expat" brought it up when losing any real arguments...

Universities are where students go after they finish school, so they are perfect places for assessing schools' performance.
btw, I have fifteen years' teaching experience in Poland (and seven years elsewhere), 13 of which in universites. If you think that my knowledge is merely anecdotal, there really is no point in discussing the issue with you.
