UK, Ireland / Why do so many Polish guys in the UK have a crew cut or buzz cut? [106]

That, and hairiness is something a lot of people don't like. It's a trend to wax the hair off the chest and arms, and off the scalp, apparently. It's the anti hair movement. Personally, it reminds me of those Area 51 alien renditions. I don't like the Chewbacca "hair to toe" hair shirt look, either. Can't we compromise, folks?

UK, Ireland / The British law on someone cutting down a piece of your garden [13]

Unfortunately, if the tree branches are on their property, they might be allowed to prune the branches so they are no longer hanging over onto their land. At least that's the way it works here. They cannot touch what is on your property, but can trim the tree so it no longer interferes with theirs.

Travel / Is panhandling a common sight in Poland? [24]

Dunno, but they seem to require to be kicked around by the cops a bit. I've seen it twice, in broad daylight.

Cops don't like street musicians? Usually they don't mind them from what I've seen. It's the bums cops really hate.

So you got that in the UK too, Isthatu? Glad it's not just here ;) I wonder if the dog and his owner both have to pay a fee for a license or is it just the dog?

She's a street musician. Do street musicians require licenses to perform in Polish cities? They have to pay a fee at city hall and get a license just to perform here.

Travel / Is panhandling a common sight in Poland? [24]

I get badgered in parking lots sometimes by dudes claiming they and their wives are out of gas and need money. I tell them "NO" and run like hell to my car. It's even worse when they expect you to fill up their tank for you.

Pawian, most cops are either aren't around or don't care.

Life / Golden Wedding in Poland, the protocol for giving gift for a wedding? [58]

It's not rude at all. I ask which is ruder, asking for money or taking every gift back to where it was bought to return it and cash in?

These folks are just being practical and newlyweds need cash more than anything else.

If you are really close to them and want to stay in their good graces, give more. If they don't mean that much to you, give less.

News / Russia says: WE'LL NUKE POLAND [150]

It's so weird that countries still threaten to nuke each other. How irresponsible. Russia should know better.

Love / Don't want others to join us at a table - is it normal for Polish girls to get angry? [161]

He should have given her the silent treatment after that date and wait for her to make the next move. If she calls and asks what's wrong, he should take that opportunity to tell her that she acted like she didn't want him around on their date and that she wanted to be with the coworker and that's why he hasn't called. See what she says then. She doesn't sound like she is that interested in the OP, anyway. Might be time to start looking for a new girl.

It sounds like her talking to that guy made you jealous. It was rude of her to pay attention to him when she is on a date with you. Could you imagine if the tables were turned and a friend of yours who is female comes over and starts it up with you, both of you ignoring her? She would be spitting daggers.

USA, Canada / Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA? [698]

the novel is a Russian, and not a Polish, classic.

Was Martha referencing the title of the novel, or just talking about a guest named Oblomov? I've never read the book so don't know if I am missing an inside joke...

On a related note, Martha Stewart is actually banned from the UK - do you people really want to claim her as Polish?

She needs to spend more time on Polish food and culture, imo. She could do more to promote Polishness in America.

News / Polish-Scottish American, Chris Ferguson, commands final Space Shuttle mission [49]

The guy is clearly as much Scottish as he is Polish.

The only things Scots do in America to celebrate their Scottish heritage is play Bagpipes and wear kilts. It's easier to celebrate Polishness than Scottishness unless you want to buy an expensive kilt and take lots of bagpipe lessons.

Was she born in Poland? Does she speak Polish?

She is of Polish ethnicity therefore she is "Polish." Think of how it is in Europe when people are of one ethnicity and live in another country. For instance, someone with German parents born in Poland, speaks Polish and all that. If someone asked he would say he is German because his parents are ethnic Germans but he has the customs of Poles and Poland because he was born there and knows the language and culture. It's the same idea with Polish Americans. They have a Polish parent or Grandparents and identify with the Polish ethnicity so they call themselves "Polish" even though they are born here. Same with Italian Americans, African Americans, Irish Americans. We are Americans by nation, Polish by ethnicity.
