History / Ukrainian-occupied Eastern Poland [135]

There are lots of threads about Polish-Ukranian relations

I'm interested in whether anyone currently uses such terms and how would others react, It struck me as odd.
I believe that saying something like that would cause a double take a WTF moment or people would think you were taking the p*ss

"Ukrainian-occupied Eastern Poland" a phrase used in the name meanings thread. Does anyone in Poland use this phrase or really think that the Ukraine is occupying Polish land?

History / Which countries are Polands friends, which are Polands enemies? [75]

they industrialised the country because Cold War required modern tanks and jet planes instead of cavalry and bayonettes.

Communists were doing the same in pre war USSR without a permanent war economy. The paradox is that Communism was based upon an industrial mode of wealth production which didn’t exist in the countries that Stalinism was inflicted upon so they had to create a wider industrial base

We will never know what would have happened to Poland without the imposition of Stalinism, whether it would have benefited from the post war capitalist boom to a greater extent than the boom it did experience or not is an unknown. Certainly right wing European dictatorships like Spain. Portugal and Greece experienced a boom but to a lesser extent than the democratic capitalist countries and again we wont know which way Poland would have gone if it had had the choice.

The numbers speak for themselves, the rapid urbanisation providing housing and employment for the majority of the population means that the Communist regime did lift an awful lot of people out of absolute poverty. The fact that they didn’t provide a mass consumer society doesn’t diminish their achievements.

It's not repeating Communist propaganda to state facts.

Life / Poland needs more immigrants and their children - which nationalities are the best? [518]

I get the feeling that you think Irishness or Irish culture is something stagnant, something too weak and can't stand up with cultures.

And this is the attitude that Pawian is trying to address (I think) silly minded nationalism.

With respect to RN look at this, first minute destroys his argument.

UK, Ireland / Why would anyone kill himself? Polish guy kills himself in Ireland [16]

The parents were separated and he was living in the house with their child. The mother turned up at the house with a male friend who was slashed with the knife then Mr Guzik closed the door and killed himself. God help the child.

Love / Prevention of child abduction by Polish mother. [232]

fair enough. Can't argue with that.

It’s a very emotive subject and personal stuff has been posted....quite unnecessarily. I have no axe to grind at all here but it is an area I'm interested in.

Barney: family courts are institutionally biased against fathers.
I wonder why...

That was a bit unnecessary

I really love the way you get them to put their heads in the noose and then skillfully kick the chair away.

I never did that and saying so was unnecessary

You do know what I was getting at. The news is so "politically correct" when it comes to these issues that even a suggestion of blame about women is considered "sexist" and worse.

Totally wrong, it’s more common for a woman to be dragged through the dirt if she fails to live up to standard than a man and the standards are "written" by men

Yes, in Europe it’s known as Post Natal Depression.

It's not a far stretch to connect infanticide and severe PPD

And I agreed with this above I would also add that Men who kill children also must suffer from some sort of imbalance

The data analysed is only as good as the sampling method used that’s where the difference in opinion comes from. Zimmy is correct in saying that family courts are institutionally biased against fathers. In a typical custody battle the word of the mother is given added weight in that the father has to battle allegations (True or not) before he achieves a level playing surface.

In Europe family courts are secret courts so there is a large black hole in the data right there.

I believe that people are essentially the same and the percentage of abusive males is the same as abusive females whatever form it takes, of course no one should stay in an abusive relationship and the result is that men almost always loose their children. Visiting rights are often disrupted for no good reason and often not "in the best interests of the child".

I'm grand

Making the leap that post natal depression may explain most infanticide is plausible especially when you consider people to be basically decent. A psychologist may be able to shed some light on this area which I'm sure is not the sole preserve of women.

I don’t believe in evil however there are sociopaths and that is gender neutral.

What?! I have never heard of such a thing.

Yes cheques can be saved then cashed together or at irregular times to cause problems for the person issuing the cheques and the child. That is why bank transfer is the best option a guaranteed payment that is deducted and deposited on a regular date, it makes everything simple.

What sort of cheques are like that?

Its standard practice to not use cheques for most transactions like this for the simple reason that cheques can be saved and all cashed together which can cause problems.

Food / Could you recommend me a fresh Polish juice from fruit? [18]

Every morning I have 100 ml of a special Aronia juice mix in a shake

I grow Aronia and use the berries to flavour alcohol, you need to mix the juice with something sweet otherwise it would be impossible to drink this side of an Iron Man competition.

I'm sure it gives you a good kick in the morning:)

Life / Struggling young Polish couple - try to solve their problem [176]

And not one person appears before the courts. If I had run my company that way would I have been so lucky?

So true, Bondholders gambled and lost they should not be paid and local corrupt elected officials should be jailed.

The people in power now are desperate to avoid a referendum especially since the last opinion polls were published however there is not much they can do to avoid it. Though the country is quite conservative the people understand that it’s not Ireland’s debt but a manufactured debt to some faceless institutions. How it looks like is contracts rewritten on a take it or leave it basis, 20-30% pay cuts, add an other 30 euros to visit the doctor and so on

If this is passed Ireland will have generations of austerity.

You changed one master for another

That is freakily similar to what the great Socialist Connolly said.

It's true there is no such thing as a free lunch but the Irish did not eat for free the only people who did were the Bond holders mainly German, French, British and Swiss banks. These people don’t hold pension funds or control intergovernmental lending so refusing to pay them what they think they are due would not hurt the ordinary person. The financial guarantee they received (When they should have received nothing) was like all aspects of the "Free Market" totally immoral and corrupt.

Yes Ireland did exchange one set of fleecing Bastards for another with the free market mantra

“Privatise profit nationalise debt”

UK, Ireland / Are Polish people importing a new wave of ancient racism into the UK? [402]

But,whats wrong with a bit of nationalism, internationalism has plainly failed?

It’s easy relatively on the Islands.
The point a lot of Polish posters are trying to get across is that when the state doesnt match the nation or nationality, when you have minorities outside and inside you are into a numbers game with land the prize. We don’t have that on the islands the borders are very clear.

Law / British managers superior to Polish [52]

And privatising the raliways was always a crap idea

I would say criminal considering the amount of public money that is poured into them.

Law / British managers superior to Polish [52]

Bollox,
British managers in lets say the Banking industry did a marvellous job, they managed to get the law changed to allow them to produce wealth. Everything they asked for was given to them yet the great bankers managed to almost bankrupt the British economy.

In the High tech industries BAE systems for example, management was so successful that they had to have the Government step in to stop them from going to jail.

The great managers in the newspaper industry, managed to corrupt the police and politicians, interfere in criminal investigations and are lucky to still be out of jail.

The great British managers in the transport industry, had to have several rail franchises taken from them and the track renationalised.

Loads more examples if I looked….

In building the Olympic stadium what has happened apart from Dow chemicals sponsoring the shroud is that working people built the structure and surrounding things.

British managers are not superior to others Britain just has more money and better infrastructure. Despite the best efforts of British managers her industry managed to survive the mis management of the 1970s.
