Study / I got accepted into a university in Gliwice, Poland! [38]

Riga would be better for a student life, Gliwice is pretty small and not much happens there.

Poland has very good universities, I'd presume Riga does too.
I'd pick Riga for the simple reason that it's a capital city and you'll have far more fun there than in little Gliwice.

It's an ok city, but that's about it, it's OK, nothing special. Most Poles don't even know where it is.

Law / Do I have to register the car from USA in Poland? [5]

how will police that I came here for short time or forever

They will find out when you are stopped and asked to produce your insurance & license....which can't be just a state license as you probably already know. I think you'll need to take a Polish driving exam after 6 months as well. poland.usembassy.gov/poland/driving.html

I think the grace period though is less than 6 months, I think it's more like 6 weeks.

Best thing to do would be to get in touch with your embassy in Warsaw and they'll point you in the right direction.

There's a similar thread from a year years ago: https://polishforums.com/law/poland-import-car-15356/

There's also this:
webportal.atlasintl.com/Customs%20Docs/poland.pdf

Good luck, sounds like it's gonna be a headache.

Work / First English teaching job in Poland (Katowice) [75]

Teaching 20 hours a week

Teaching 20 hours a week for 1800zl!!!
That's seriously f*cked up.

You should be getting at the very minimum 2500zl from the school, @50zl per hour. Since you're, probably, the only native willing to work there, get asking for 60zl per hour.

Doing some private lessons on the side....get an ad up on gumtree.pl in your area and you might be able to get another 1000zl.

3500 & living rent free and you'll have the life of Reilly, but from bitter experience, you'll struggle on 1800.

Seriously mate, this school is screwing you already. Your choice, but most of us here know people who've done the same thing and they've gone home with their tails between their legs by Christmas.

Plus it's only July, schools don't start till late September/early October, most haven't even started looking for teachers yet. Plenty of jobs out there.

Re: insurance, just make sure it's valid for living abroad and not just for travelling. I was in hospital here once and nobody wanted anything to do with me. Showed them my travel insurance and I was given the gold treatment. Ultra sounds, MRIs, the works :D

Without it though, I was proper f!cked.

Good luck to ya fella, I can see your heart is set on coming to Poland so best of luck. 1800 wouldn't last a week for some posters. Petrol, cigarettes, beer and food etc. That'd cost me roughly 400-500zl a week plus whatever bills are due.

Living ain't cheap in Poland....only food and drink are cheap...actually gas and electricity are too (but I guess you're not gonna pay for them), everything else costs the same as back home.

Something that hasn't been asked OP,
Will the school be paying your social and health insurance payments?
They amount to about 400zl per month I think.
Without them you're likely to get kicked out of a hospital should you need treatment.

Yes - and we know it's a slum street called Mariacka. Fine if you like streets smelling of **** from all the drunks and hobos.

Avoid.

Doug being negative. There's a surprise!
Saying that Mariacka is a slum full of drunks and hobos just goes to show that you've not been there in ages.
Christ, the square in Krakow has far more drunks and hobos.
But yea, go ahead, be negative and make sweeping generalisations.

OP, you need to go back to this employer, or slave owner, whatever he's calling himself and demand at least 60zl per hour.
50-60zl per hour is the going rate for beginner teachers in Kato.

The fact that you'll be teaching an hour outside the city means they're probably desperate for you to work there, since they'll be able to charge their students more thanks to them having a native speaker there. You should ask for even more. Or just get a job in Katowice city, or the other cities around it....not Chorzow or Myslowice though, those places are f*ckin hellholes.

They are paying 1800 a month

Are you crazy? That's terrible money. Like, really, really, really bad. Even with paid accommodation. It's minimum wage.

In smaller towns, are there many amenities

Would need to know the name of the town.

What sort of lifestyle can you have out in a small town with 1800 a month? Is it going to be back to the old student days?

Yea, you'll be dirt poor on that money.

Will there be many English speakers, other than at the school? Would it be ideal to pre-learn some Polish?

I live in Kato and anywhere that's an hour away is usually some backwater. You'll probably be the only foreigner, so get learning the lingo.

What are the students/staff generally like?

A mix, some students will want to learn, some will only be there coz their parents sent them. Staff, well most will be welcoming and cool, the odd loser will be jealous of you getting 'their' extra hours, but it's the same politics everywhere, no different than back home.

Is there much to do in Katowice? Is there an expat community?

Yea, when the weather's good it's a great place to live, grim as f*ck in the winter. There's a few of us immigrants (I refuse to call myself an expat - such a nasty word), there's a fair few English teachers, then plenty of Germans & Italians working 'proper' jobs. But you might find it hard to travel into and out of Kato at night after a few pints. Is there a bus that runs at night?

But man, seriously though, that money. I wouldn't come next nor need to Poland for that. It's pittance. You'll survive, that's about it.Sorry to burst any bubbles. But trust me, I've been there and have been ripped off by schools in the past. You'd need at least double that to be any way comfortable.

Not exactly a party city though.

You've not been in a while so. There's a whole street dedicated to pubs and restaurants now.

Law / Buying a car in Poland or Germany? [36]

You can't go wrong with the above.
Volvo parts might be a bit more expensive.
If you can though, look into leasing a car.

UK, Ireland / Pack from Ireland to Poland via An Post [16]

The problem with that is when the postie gets cute and leaves an advice slip requesting that Mr A N Other comes to collect the post.

Yea, that could be a problem, I've explained to the owner of my local post office about it though and she's cool with it. Gave her a couple of bottles of vodka at christmas, a little bribery goes a long, long way in Poland

Stuff send from Ireland to me used to go missing all the time.
Put a stop to it by getting everything addressed to a fake Polish name at the same address.

Life / Boy Scouts in Poland = Patriotism, honesty, and self-sacrifice [13]

to be honest a lot of parents are not really into sending their children out of an evening in a quasi military uniform to be shouted out by a bunch of weirdos....
too many soout leaders are oddballs, and that is putting it nicely.
if protecting our children from perverts is decadent and hedonistic.....bring it on, sister.

Hahahaa, brilliant :D

Patriotism, honesty, and self-sacrifice, doing good deeds, aquiring woodland survival skills, being resourceful, serving God and Country, helping little old ladies cross busy streets

you forgot rampant pedophilia .

UK, Ireland / Non EU citizen married to a Pole. Living and working opportunity in the UK? [7]

foreigners in poland/get-work-permit-poland/

You can get a work permit for Poland (No. 9 on that link), whether that 'translates' to other EU countries I don't know. Maybe you should contact the Irish embassy where you live now and ask them.

First though you'll need to jump through all kinds of hoops to get married here, avoid a church wedding, that involves even more paperwork & even ghastly marriages courses. Civil marriages are far easier.

News / Presidential elections and debates 2015 Poland [472]

komorowski got only around 10% in Chicago

It is so wrong that Yanks can vote in Polish elections.
It's just plain wrong that people who don't live here can vote. Yet people living here for years cannot.

Totally messed up.

Work / Information on teaching English in Poland - Bielsko-Biała, Slaskie region. What are the possibilities here? [6]

Is certification really necessary to teach in PL?

It's not stictly speaking necessary, but you won't get paid as much without a Celta and you won't be hired by the school with the better reputations.

If you want to work in a Callen method school then you'll be fine, but you'll end up going nuts parrotting sentences to kids with no real interesting in learning.

I must point out though that the teaching English train sailed a long long time ago.
MOney is crap and conditions are usual sh!te too. You won't be paid during holidays (including Christmas, Easter and all the other nonsense public holidays Poland has).

Bielsko doesn't have many foreigners living there so you should be fine with finding work.
Only advice I can give is to learn some Polish, living here without knowledge of the language is doable, but it ain't easy.

Don't forget you'll have to register as self-emplyed and pay your own tax and health/social insurance.
Tbh, I wouldn't advise moving here as a teaching, go to South Korea, that's where the money is. You'll survive here on a teacher's wage, but you won't save much and don't forget about the long, brutal winters.

News / Poland's presidential system? [9]

by reducing the number of pricey parliamentary bureaucrats

You don't need to reduce the number to do that, just reduce the pay.

Poland wants to save money?
Stop buying French helicopters and American arms.
If Poland wants military equipment there's zero reason they cannot be manufactured here.

Other than the reason being that fat contracts given to overseas manufacturers giving a kickback to whom the contracts are signed with.

News / Poland's presidential system? [9]

Wouldn't a presidential-parliamentary system be more effective?

No, the rule of the President is to sign bills into law. He/She must be objective at all time.
If it was a presidential-parliamentary system like America/France it would become a mess.

How about each of the 16 voivosdhisp having 3 senators

No, why should sh!teholes infested with rednecks like Podkarpackie have the same say in Parliament as better, more forward thinking provinces?
No way. Representation should be done per population.

The problem with Polish politics isn't the structure on which it operates, it's the idiots operating it.
Would you blame they JCB that dug the foundation of your house?
No, you'd, rightfully, blame the clown who was behind the wheel.

Life / Vandalism on cars in Poland [64]

And if that fails stick the footage up on youtube with locations, i.e. street name, city, time, date.

Jon's advice is better though.

Plus dude, it's just a car, your insurance will pay for it and if you have the proper insurance it won't even effect your 'no claims'.

Could've been worse, could've been you.

News / Footie hooligan punch-up thwarted in Poland [47]

"One way to deal with the problem would be for someone (councils, police, sport clubs, schools, parishes) to organise contact-sport activities where the young testosterone thugs could let off steam in a controlled environment."

What a ridiculous thing to say regarding this case.
The cops were incredibly heavy-handed on how they dealt with the football fans. I would bet that this being a low league match the cops weren't particularly experienced with dealing with real hooligans of the area, i.e Ruch Chorzow, Gornik Zabrze.

Some idiot cop shot a guy and killed him.
In my eyes he should be charged with manslaughter.

The use of plastic bullets is archaic. Completely unescessary in this day and age. Polish cops have plenty of pepper spray and the use of water cannons, as well as truncheons. And a young man is dead because of the wrong actions of the Police.

The ad hoc reaction would be to have the wreckers clean up and repair the damage they did with their own grubby hands. If they are juveniles their parents should be required to pay. If they lack the money, the bailiff could always take the old man's TV set. Dad would fix his rioting brat just fine.

You've written some really dumb sh!t in your time, but that's might just be the winner.

The actions of the Police caused these riots. I'm certainly no fan of football hooligans but if a cop killed one of my friends I'd be first in line to throw rocks at the ba$tard$

Life / Polish people are miserly?? [25]

For a huge amount of people, wages are terrible in Poland, thus you gotta be a bit more careful with your money.

Actually, many visitors to Poland complain of the Poles' excessive, arm-bending hospitality, forcing food and drink on a guest

Many Polish people say this about themselves. It's strange. Hospitality in Poland is no different that any other country I've ever been too. Most people (when you're a guest in their homes) are hospitable regardless of where they're from.
