Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

=pgtx]a mink?

Nope. Minks are larger.

=gumishu]a weasel - a friend of mine once found a weakened one on a dirt road (we were both 13 or 12 I guess) - taken it home and fed it for some time then released it

Yes, weasel. It is so fascinatingly small - probably the smallest carnivorous mammal in the world.

Its cousin is a bit bigger:

Riddle: What is its great contribution to the Polish high culture? Very very high?

A bit. :):):)

=pgtx]he figures, he can go faster than his bike?

Yes. I didn`t see it because was busy with sth else when suddenly my son reported that the man found himself on the rocky ground in front of his bike.

The trail was extrememely hard, indeed.

Are you serious or kidding because I don`t know. :):):)

=gumishu]btw teflcat you will be the firts male adult person to wear a mohair beret that to be heard of

My father in law has one too. But he votes PO because he wants to see his grandchildren in the future. :):):):):):):):):)
That was a silly joke, sorry.

=gumishu]I pray PSL don't make it this time - though they have their 'iron electorate' - so it's gonna be tough

How can you be so unwise? Don`t you realise they are the best coalition partner for PO? It is elementary, Watson. :):):)

=hague1cmaeron] I just find the whole idea of getting fined when you fail to vote so undemocratic.

Right. It is a breach of freedom to vote or not to vote.

Hey, how about a little prediction game? What do you think the final results will be? Let`s see whose guess will hit bullseye.

Mine:

PO - 34%
PiS - 29%
SLD - 12%
PSL- 7%

The rest 18% will be taken by sofa parties which won`t make it, though, through the minimum to enter Sejm, and invalid votes.

Law / Is having private students in Poland legal? Or a registration as self-employed is required [30]

=Newbie1]Is having private students in Poland legal

Yes, of course.

=Newbie1]do you have to register yourself as self employed and set up your own company so to speak?

Yes, you do.

Is it risky to have them?

Not at all.

nd what are the chances of getting in to trouble with the law if you just accept cash in hand?

Practically zero. The only possible situation when you might get into trouble is when a student who doesn`t pass an exam you were preparing him/her for takes you to court.

History / What do Poles owe to Russians? [193]

The Russians were the inspiration for the following song: Hej strzelcy-and the following words

This is one of my fav patriotic songs but I knew only two first stanzas. The rest you qouted are rather unknown, probably not included in the original version of the song.

Poles don't drink Russian vodka, we have our own vodka.

Exactly.

As I said before, for average Westerners we are primitive barbarians.

But we are respected by average Russians. At least they have a neutral attitude.

Films on youtube by Russians and Easterners travelling through Poland are so "Polish" that one may think they were made by Poles. However, the music added by Russians is better - more romantic.

Language / Polish regional accents? [141]

We shouldn`t blow the problem out of its proper proportions. Let`s be frank - the pre-war Polish isn`t much different than the contemporary one. We can perfectly understand what they sing.

Both mean "why" (or so I've read),

Not exactly.

Po co? is What for?
Dlaczego? is Why?

PS. Ooops, Mom was first. Sorry.

Life / Question about hot water in Poland and the use of water heaters? [52]

What type of sources do they use to obtain hot water?

In Krakow, most people use gas heaters for hot water. They are the most economical, because electric heaters generate too high expenses.

In result, most Polish urban bathrooms are decorated with this gadget:

d

I have always had one, too.

However, in smaller towns in which gas network is not developed, people use electric boilers.

Excellent news, indeed.

I love digging for farfocle in my belly button. It is a fascinating activity, probably because it is so rare - happens once in a few years.

=hague1cmaeron]I am too used to the Australian system.

But you certainly do realise that the Australian system is obsolete? :):):):)

2011 Advertisements:

PIS: Poles deserve more. Honest state. Exchanged with Safety, etc etc

s

My comment:
I know I deserve more for being such a patriotic Pole.

However, I know that PiS won`t do much to give me what I deserve.

No other government will. I must get it myself.

As for the rest - I like honesty and safety but is there really need to wage a civil war so that Poland ca be safe and honest??? Can`t we do it another way?

Language / Polish regional accents? [141]

=ShAlEyNsTfOh]Are there any regions in Polska today, which still speak with the pre-war accent?

Hmm, maybe some primitive Polish tribes hidden in Białowieska Jungle Forest, without access to the radio and TV, still keep old traditions.... ):):):)

Seriously, I don`t think so.

=ShAlEyNsTfOh]why do many Poles often neglect the final 'ę' in words??

For the same reason that so many Brits and Ams eat parts of words while they speak English.

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

=adnar]I don't find it unfair, they bought such ads on youtube, they have right to do so.

Yes, you are right.

=adnar]They want to appeal to younger voters,

Yes again, they are trying to look and sound cool and jazzy....

=adnar]..they won't get young people to vote for them.

Unfortunately, I read sth else. Today, it is trendy for some young people to vote PiS.

But it is natural, in a way. Youngsters have always been against establishment. And PO, after 4 years in power, is certainly perceived as rotten establisment by them. PiS is seen as the voice and choice of the younger generation.

Hopefully, wise, experienced people who form the majority of voters and are able to see through scam and sham, won`t allow PiS` comeback to power.

=hague1cmaeron]If I had the chance to vote I would probably vote all the way down to number 10.

Nope. In Polish elections, you put a CROSS (!) next to ONE candidate only! In this way, you mark him/her as your personal as well as your favourite party choice. Later on, the party will decide which candidate from the list shall become a member of Sejm. Normally and justly, those with most votes become ones, but the final decision is the party`s.
