UK, Ireland / Crap parenting in our UK youth today (in Poland it's a little better) [52]

I agree with you totally. But---it is not about being strict or beating them. I have never hit either one of my kids. I constantly get compliments on how well behaved my kids are. They are 7 and 12. It has to do with actually being a parent and a role model. Not sitting in front of a tv or computer for hours at a time but actually sitting as a family and enjoying each others company.

It also has to do with respecting others. I see so many selfish whiney bratty kids that cry if they don't get what they want. There is nothing wrong with saying no to children.

And another thing- Polish kids eat way too much sugar. It is as addictive as crack and it alters behaviour- especially in boys. Food is not a reward for good behaviour- especially sugar.

Life / Let`s compare prices of services and products in Poland [359]

no, but Ive got family there and they say you can buy lots of ice cream and still live a comfortable life.

I am calling bulshit on this one...much like your real estate expertise. arguing just for the sake of arguing. Sweden is expensive, I just got back from there on Sunday. Gas is twice the price, restaurant meals are expensive--mine alone cost 75 pln for salmon and salad. Bottled water is twice the price, bread, drinks--everything is twice the price.

I just came back from Sweden where everything is expensive. I mean everything. Gas was twice the price as in Poland. Food in restaurants is something like 75 pln for a hamburger. Everything we came across was at least twice the price.

we went to a water park and it was crazy. I thought pools in Poland were expensive- they are a fraction of what they are in Sweden.

It was a shock- it actually became a bit of a joke after the 2nd day. 30 pln for a scoop of ice cream.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

in.reuters.com/article/2012/08/16/poland-gtc-idINL6E8JG5HA20120816

Warsaw-listed real estate developer GTC plans to scale back its presence in less-stable markets in central and southeast Europe and focus instead on investments in Poland, it said on Thursday.

"Times are tough, very tough, and we are readying ourselves for such a difficult situation for the next one or two years," GTC Chairman Alain Ickovics told a press conference.

GTC said it was in talks over the sale of several projects, primarily outside Poland, to raise cash for new investments. Its plan assumes raising 180 million euros from asset disposals by the end of 2014

USA, Canada / Warsaw or New York? Where to work, raise a family, etc... [14]

the American school pays well otherwise it wouldn't have American teachers.

what is wrong with taking a year break if his contract allows it then deciding from there.

Don't listen to the nay sayers here.

aswarsaw.org/about/employment/index.aspx

school starts in about two weeks so they have probably hired already---maybe next year?

why? that one is the european school on jagiellska? next to the forest? we have friends with kids that go to that one and they are happy with it.

there is an "International American School" in Kabaty. This school is a joke. Mostly Indian teachers and the director has just been charged with falsifying test scores to bump up the schools ratings.

The American School in Konstancin is the only true American school in Warsaw.

Try the American School of Warsaw or the British School of Warsaw. Both are considered top tier. The American school is constantly expanding. Check the website. They have a pool, gym, amphetheatre, cafeteria and the list goes on and on. The fees are about 60,000 pln per year which if you are foreign means that your company pays- if you are Polish- majority pay themselves and so love to brag about it--but the salaries are good and paid in USD (or they were)

Can you not take a leave of absence or sabbatical for a year to figure out if you want to stay before resigning from your job?

Both places have benefits- one is not better than the other but it is not like the late 90's here in Warsaw anymore. Many business people speak English and it is now the second language taught in all public schools- so the market is saturated.

many here will say don't do it.

I did it. Packed up and moved from a newly bought house and a steady job with benefits in Canada. It has been eight years and we have no idea when we are going back.

Law / Largest Corp In Poland :Polski Koncern Naftowy S.A. [8]

Loads of other questions- but let's start with those, shall we?

those allotments, however, are an eye sore. They look like a broken down trailer park. If there were some guidelines- it would do a lot to improve the look.

News / Amber Gold and other Poland's suspicious institutions [139]

greed and ego are indeed character flaws.

The first deal my husband did after we moved here (commercial real estate) was will a Polish investors group/ stock market trader. They took loads of space at prime and they fitted it out in over priced finishings in a style of feng shui. Needless to say- these guys lived large. In your face, obnoxious- former blokersi with money, arrogant pigs. Anyway- about nine months after they moved in they all got arrested for insider trading and laundering. It was quite the scene having the police to come during office hours to take all these men away and they are all still serving time.

The unfortunate thing is that loads of people lost their life savings- which is indeed what has happened with Amber Gold. That guy needs a public flogging.

History / 'If the Warsaw uprising were today... ' -Interesting question I heard today [14]

can you see some 30 something guy, who drives a bmw, white jeans, tommy hillfiger and an armani belt buckle (I just saw a guy like this last week) deck shoes, ray bans and stupid hair deciding to fight?

I would expect with Polands war history- more would be willing to fight- but I think it has changed.
I am just interested- I do have my own thoughts on it- but I am curious to what others think.

I use my husband as an example. He would at the blink of an eye drop everything and fight- even though he has a good income- he doesn't think he is above the fight where I expect many do think they are better than that.

History / 'If the Warsaw uprising were today... ' -Interesting question I heard today [14]

got me thinking--this was asked on the radio today. If the Warsaw uprising were today- how many people would fight for the freedom of others and how many young people in Warsaw would, without hesitation, volunteer to fight?

I understand the environment and society are different but do you think people would come together or divide?

My husband would fight without hesitation- he would probably be first in line but I do think Warsaw is a "me" society and a lot would not be so willing.

Study / Polish language school in Tarnow or Rzeszow or Sanok? [27]

I went to Polish language school with a few Korean guys. They totally picked up the language- their pronunciation was off because of the tongue placement differences in the language- but they were really good.

The Chopin idea is really great- I see a lot of Japanese tourists in the summer listening to the Chopin concerts in Lazienki Gardens- I am sure they would love an insiders perspective.

Study up on your Chopin.....maybe it could help you.

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

Poland four star is a nice hotel- usually with a pool but it is not the same as a four star in the west. A three star is something like Journey's End or best western- here a three star is a crap shoot. You may get nice but you may not. Take the advice and check reviews on tripadvisor or booking.- they are there to help.

kolo market- google that- there is loads of furniture and antiques- get there early.

there is one in Ursynow- I think the street is Belgradzka and KEN....it is on KEN- don't remember the cross street name but there is metro access. There is one at Sadyba next to Sadyba Best Mall.

There is another on Domaniewska and Pulawska- also on the metro line as well as tram line.

Life / Talk about good parenting (Polish family leaves their 2yo at a gate's airport) [6]

this situation is so messed up. they leave the child with the lady behind the counter- saying that the grandfather would be there in a minute to pick her up. two hours later he shows up.

1st question- why would the lady behind the counter agree to this? she should lose her job.

Of course- how stupid are the parents- I hope they lose custody and spend some time in prison- that is ridiculous- and the grandfather agreed to this garbage??
