Food / How to cook Frozen pierogi? Boil or Fry? [90]

plk123

they'lll really stick and also burn before you ever get the centers warm enough to eat.

Think cast iron

Once a year?????? go to any Polish deli store---and living in Chicago there is a huge Polish community----get some homemade frozen pierogi and even some stores sell them fresh. You can never have enough of these dumplings.

I'm from there but now I live in that "Great American Hinterland". I like homemade, fact is I've never liked store/deli bought ones. Just not the same.

News / Hollywood's War with Poland. [150]

MareGaea

This thread is proof that some Poles have cultivated complaining and whinging and whining to a cultural phenomena that is meeting with more and more irritation outside of PL.

True and It's embarrassing. The fact is the Polish community in the United States is highly successful. Some people on this board depict us as some sort of downtrodden minority. I don't know where they get this stuff. Most Americans of Polish ancestry are part of the professional managerial class, they integrate into American society and are virtually invisible.

Food / How to cook Frozen pierogi? Boil or Fry? [90]

Living in Chicago we always ate our pierogi's fried in butter, never boiled. Filled with all kinds of stuff, but my favorite was sauerkraut. Least favorite was prunes, yuk. Used to add mushroom soup as a kind of sauce. Also never eaten alone but with a meat dish either polish sausage or polish ham. I got my english wife to make 'em and we have once a year of so. Good stuff.

Love / Can 'engaged' soon to marry Polish men say I love you to their female friend? [62]

EpicMe

He gave you the password because he wanted for you to see he has another. He doesn't want to get married. Don't belabor the whole affair, find another. Furthermore dating foreigners is a lot different than dating locals, for the simple reason you don't know their intentions. Also learn the lingo. If you're not going to learn the lingo, stick to yankees' ... or english.

[quote]In many parts of the world people starve to death. In other parts of the world people are literary eating themselves to death.[quote]

People don't eat anymore in the States than they used to, it's just the wrong stuff. When I was a kid it was meat and potatoes, now it's pasta, pasta, pasta and High fructose corn syrup in everything. Too many sugars and carbs.

Life / Anyone else suffering from mosquito bites in Poland? [52]

Amathyst

Back on the mozzi topic, we've got problems in the UK with them..again its related to stagnant pools of water..

Mosquitos in the UK??? Me wlfe didn't know what a mosquito was til she came to the states. Mosquitos need 55 degree temps @ night to breed, to cold & damp in the UK, at least I thought.

Love / A Polish womans relationship with her mother in law. [44]

the murder of your first granchild,

Typical Roman Catholic. Murder is an illegal killing. Abortion is not murder unless it is illegal. Don't confuse what is legal with what is moral.

Cannabis is not a "soft" drug.

True. Habitual drug use may cause irrational behavior.

Study / Studying in Poland in English [35]

If you're going to study at a European University you learn the language of the host country. You won't get to know the country without a working knowledge of the language. You'll be forever on the outside looking in. If you're still stuck on English, than study in England. Don't be ignorant.

UK, Ireland / The number of Anti-English Poles... [228]

The English aren't lazy, they're just not going to work for a bare minimum wage. It's the same in the States, the illegal immigrants are employed because it's cheaper and increases the companies profitability. Since no one is working and getting a decent wage that provides a disposable income, one wonders who is going to buy the products that these companies put out. The moral of the story is that these businesses are cannibalizing their own markets. A flawed business model.

Genealogy / Polish Surnames Anglicized? [48]

my name zygmunt bogdanislaw barankierowczek

was changed to "ted brown" when i came to america

Makes perfect sense to me. Why have such a difficult Polish name if you're living in America?

I'm sure whenever groups migrated they changed their names to fit their circumstances. Heck I am sure that a lot of people didn't even have surnames until the last two or three hundred years.

UK, Ireland / The number of Anti-English Poles... [228]

The fat as.ed Brits who never say a day of work are

We have Ex-English living in the States. For instance English nurses or secretaries are very highly regarded. I've never heard someone say the English are lazy.

And of course, the 88%-ish of white British citizens don't get involved in criminality and benefit fraud. I mean, all the scum we see on Jeremy Kyle are immigrants, aren't they?

The difference being is that it is their country. The English can deal with the English, but the English cannot deal with is all the poverty and unemployment of Eastern Europe.

History / 'Poland: A Knight Among Nations' - Book about Poland by an American Author, dated 1907 [51]

Wow! I mean...wow! you most certainly are a "pollack" polak...

From the book:

"Ancient Poland had no middle class, no bourgeoisie, A class so necessary for the perpetuity of a nation. It was in consequence of this inequality in the national character, and as a result of certain fatal diplomatic mistakes, and a false political method, that Poland was reduced to a state of internal anarchy in the 18th Century. She then easily fell a prey to the three neighboring monarchies."

Life / Bringing my best American friend to Poland. [7]

I found a list of "problems" that kinda rain on my parade.

Let things happen. Spontaneity is always more fun.

Ohh yeh just be sure to tell your mate not to run around shouting his mouth off like many Americans do when abroad.

Be yourselves. Americans are loud. It's what the Euros expect, don't disappoint them.

Work / Opus Dei opens school in Warsaw [21]

Roman Catholic Church is a highly politicized institution. Religion is just used as a front for their political activity. Wasn't Pope Pius XII or was it the XI kicked out of Poland in 1925 for political meddling? (It was the WWII pope).

In 1930's Spain Opus Dei was involved in the Spanish Civil War and took the side of the Franco's fascists.

News / Potheads attack police in Warsaw [40]

but it has been studied just seems that the studies don't fit into all the righteous drunk's idea of what they think mj is so those studies are discounted..

Nothing has been studied as much as tobacco. MJ is not in as widespread use as tobacco. Studies and effects just haven't been done.

mj has a fraction of the poisonous chemicals that cigarettes do..
etc.. it's not even close to the kind of poison alcohol or tobacco are

From the mouths of babes. You don't know what's in mj that you get on the street.

mj is not addictive..

From my personal experience when mj was much more common than it is now, I disagree. Yes, it is addictive. Most if not all drugs are.

News / Potheads attack police in Warsaw [40]

Let's not lose our heads here. It's just marihuana and what does it matter if they want to smoke a joint? It really doesn't. I've never seen sb who was stoned start fights, like ppl who are drunk do.

That's because marijuana is much more of a depressant than alcohol.

actually tobacco is more dangerous then mj

Don't know. Mj isn't in widespread use as tobacco and hasn't been studied as much. Also it's hard for me to believe that when smoking maryjane you hold it in your lungs and that doesn't have a detrimental effect on your lungs.

News / Warsaw a "big winner" in city life quality index [26]

I don't trust this ranking Krakow, Wroclaw and Poznan do not make it into the top 50 BUT CHICAGO DOES!!

Of course it ranks in the top 50! Why do you think that more Ex-Poles live in Chicago than any other city outside of Warsaw??

Life / Poland's population predictions [59]

According to the 2002 Polish census there were 1,541 "ethnic Americans" living in Poland. Another website, refering to the same 2002 census, puts the total number of US Citizens living in Poland at about 30,000 dual US-Polish citizens, and 1000 US Citizens.

I'm sure most Americans living in Poland are Ex-Pat Poles who've managed to get an American Passport.

News / Komorowski for complex-ridden Poles? [94]

Seanus

I played football today and stormed off the pitch due to their lack of heart. Some young here just lack passion, like their souls have been crushed

Poles who live in the States are highly competitive and motivated.

I encourage people to listen to Peter Schiff on how business has been stifled.

Peter Schiff is an idiot. The guy lives in La La land. American business has been stifled? Gee, how so? Quite the contrary, they've gone berserk. All they've done, since The Bush family have risen to political power, is lower our wages with illegal immigration and cheap Chinese imports. What we have in the US is crony capitalism.

Life / Apple v IBM computers in Poland [37]

Whats the skinny on Linux? I'm on Slackware's mailing list but I haven't had time lately to fool around and load it up.

Is Linux virus proof?

I use lots of engineering apps, where is Linux on Cad programs?

What about Windows Emulators?

News / Komorowski for complex-ridden Poles? [94]

Interesting post. IMHO Poland needs to look inward. It spends too much time looking to other countries for it's solutions. Poland needs to depend on Poland.

Travel / How much money do I need to travel to Poland from Argentina? [9]

My two cents...but when I travel overseas I find it's best to use credit cards as they make the currency conversion for you. Keep track of your purchases and you will be able to budget your money.

USA, Canada / Why do Americans (and Canadians) hate Polish people? [226]

[quote]I live in Poland and I've never heard any anti geraman or anti russian joke. In the other hand I think we are the only nation in the world to talk jokes about themselves... but polish jokes about polishmen are funny and really inteligent

Norwegians are worse than Poles when it comes to jokes about themselves. They're referred to as "ole and lena" jokes. The theme is a dumb Norwegian couple.

The movie "Fargo" is one big Norwegian joke.

Some of you poles are much too sensitive.

Life / Why are Poles in other countries called "Plastic Poles"? [168]

My sister is one of those people - she can't speak a word of the language, has nothing to do with Poles except for close family, despises Polish people generally, and calls herself "English".

She knows herself. Good for her.

I never call myself English

Why??? If you think this way than you should move to Poland and embrace all things Polish. Why are you staying in England?

What do the Nazi's know? Why are they the authorities when it comes to ethnicity/nationality? Actually your line of thinking does have more in common with the Nazi's.

When one studies the migration of humankind there are no pure races. Poland is full of mutts: Swedish invasions, German invasions, Mongol invasions, Russian invasions, etc. etc.

Pure bred Polish? What's that??

Life / Why are Poles in other countries called "Plastic Poles"? [168]

BS

My family has been in America since before 1900 and haven't been back. When do I become American? How long do I perpetuate the myth of ethnicity? I mean where did the Poles originally come from? Central Asia?
