Life / Gran Torino - Walt Kowalski, the movie [39]

It's like the director threw the word "polack" in there just so he could justify the steady stream of other slurs and jokes about the hmong, "hey, it's okay, we are calling the protagonist a Polack so don't worry about offensive terms like "slope head" and "zipper."

It also justifies others to call Poles ethnic slurs seeing they hate everyone else. It was great seeing Clint playing a Polish American just not like this.

Life / Gran Torino - Walt Kowalski, the movie [39]

I did notice his last name is Polish but the movie was only racist in a superficial sense. The plot centered around the idea of redemption for a man who served in a war and might have done some things that weighed heavily on his conscience. My only question is, could the movie have been just as effective without so many slurs?

Of course it could have I've seen similar films before, they could have made him into a bitter old man without all that. The thing is his name Kowalski is mentioned several times and that he's Polish being called a 'Polack". With him calling others ethnic slurs throughout the movie what is ones first instinct? To dislike Poles because they hate me and everyone else. The slurs overwhelm the whole positive story behind the movie was trying tell.

Life / Gran Torino - Walt Kowalski, the movie [39]

I've got some strange Polish-American relatives; none as crazy as him!

Saw this movie some time ago, love Clint Eastwood but I don't know what was up with this movie. It looked like the filmmaker wanted Poles to be seen as racist as possible. An old patriotic white war veteran who is racist? that could be anyone in America. 2/3 of elderly white people are racist. For some reason the filmmaker had to make him a Polish American who seemed to hate everyone in sight on a psycho scale. Very anti-Polish movie.

The HIV clinic in Warsaw has no shortage of patients, and there is a high incidence of HIV and STDs in Poland.

Actually tiny compared to Poland's eastern neighbors. It wasn't available online for quite some time but i found it. This documentary is about the epidemic in Russia.

Love / Do polish men like career women? [60]

Men like women with a brain and personality.#

It looks good if a woman has a brain but isn't arrogant about it. Besides I was always attracted to a woman in a buisness suit, very sexy ;-)

History / Richard "The Iceman" Kuklinski [16]

Well I dunno if he did 'a hundred murders before he was even know' like he said. But I'm sure he murdered many more people than he was convinced of, becoming more sloppy as he aged.

History / Richard "The Iceman" Kuklinski [16]

Yea but he didn't take it the wrong way because people who hired him out of the Gambino crime family knew him as 'The Iceman' or the 'Polack'. He was by the way of mixed Polish Irish heritage his father an immigrant from Poland and his mother and immigrant from Ireland.

News / Polands new class of immigrant. [60]

The ones you are talking about were illegal recent arrivals who got deported with only the clothes on their backs. They shouldn't have even beer there. BTW when did your first, second, and third waves occur, what time frame are we looking at?

returning AmPols.

Over the last 10 years the number of Polish Immigrants in America has fallen by 35,000, and currently consists of 458 254 people. It's not a very drastic decrease many of these people were simply the elderly who came after WWII and passed away.

However in New York the combined number of Poles and people of Polish ancestry has risen from 213 447 to 230 778 people.

We can also toss in the returning AmPols.

I don't think you can put Poles who moved to America became citizens, made some money and decided to move back to Poland in the same category as others.

Life / Is parity the answer for Polish women? [262]

, Swedes didn't discriminate against blacks like America did. They have traditionally been more egalitarian so 'tweaking'

Yea but Swedes ,pardon my French, are dick1ng themselves! Malmo is a ghetto. Arabs, Africans walk around like they're at home. Swedes (the common people) are trying to be civilized and not discriminate but they don't really want them there. But if you say something you're automatically a racist. Those newcomers are not blind they see they can get away with almost anything there. Sweden is giving them freedom that they could never have dreamed of in their old country.

History / Do any Poles miss the Communist era? [35]

I know all about it, everyone had a job, rent, gas, electric, water was dirt cheap. But so you had to wait 20 years to get an apartment, there wasn't anything to but in stores later on even if there was the money was worthless. If it wasn't for that damn system Poland would be Spain by now.

History / Do any Poles miss the Communist era? [35]

Yes but capitalism was a roll of the dice that few would even have entertained had they had the chance.

The way the Polish and all Eastern Bloc economies fell throughout the whole 80s I doubt if communism remained Poland would have been in a better state during those troublesome years of the early 90s.

History / Do any Poles miss the Communist era? [35]

The socialist sentiment is stronger amongst them than you think, Penn. The state was their saviour.

Because it brainwashed them into thinking that way, the state was the people's mother nurturing, taking care of them (at least making people believe that). Meanwhile, they heard stories that people in the west have far more material things and more freedom.

Quite a few older Poles

I don't think they miss communism they miss those days, their youth. The only good I can think of was order and respect for the law.

USA, Canada / Polish-American Musicians [45]

Are you denying they might just be ethnically Chinese?

Yes they most certainly are. I have a few Irish American friends who are full Irish. So what if they're 3rd generation in America. Their grandparents then parents married people who were only of Irish background, they didn't mix that makes then full Irish.

Every American first and foremost identifies as an American (unless brainwashed by his parents from an early age lol). He just knows his ancestry but doesn't live or act on it.

If you lived in American u'd know that everyone who knows they are Polish identify as Polish being at least one of his/her ancestries. And Americans live and talk like Americans.
