Travel / From Poland With Love [20]

Episode 4
The team heads west towards the German border to the Silesian forests. With its Germanic aesthetics, the area is fittingly home to a massive goth get-together. Ivar gets in on the goth-moshing before embarking on an exceedingly awkward chat with a sexy she-goth. Julita busies herself with asphyxiation-by-bodice. From there they head to Osinow Dolny on the Polish-German border where there are more hair salons per capita than anywhere else in the world.

Edward Szwajkiewicz, an electrician in the shipyard who used his position to disseminate anti-communist flyers, talks them through the final days of communism and how he and his co-workers fought the powers that be. At the end of the day, Julita's gran tell us her secret recipe for pickled herring.

While at his campsite, they talk over his controversial new film, hailed as the Polish Trainspotting, a drug fueled narrative with plenty of stylistic twists that tries to capture the essence of Polish mentality. Then to Lodz and its famous film school, where Julita interviews the amazing Malgorzata Szumowska-up and coming director and producer, and one of the most famous female filmmakers of her generation.

History / What happened from 1650-1795? [68]

@jasinski

I would recommend you to read one of Adam Zamoyskis books called "Poland - A History"

No nation's history has been so distorted as that of Poland. In 1797 Russia, Prussia and Austria divided the country up among themselves, rewriting history to give the impression that Poland had never been a fully sovereign state, only a backwater that needed civilising. In fact the country they had wiped off the map had been one of the largest and most richly varied in Europe, embracing a wide variety of cultural and religious traditions, accommodated within one of the boldest constitutional experiments ever attempted. Its destruction created an imbalance and initiated a series of struggles that culminated in the two world wars and the Cold War.

adamzamoyski.com/books.htm

All the ******** we read today from the "international" history books about Poland being so poor and neglected and finally partitioned is something that the 3 Barbaric countries decided after they partitioned Poland. In a secret article they decided to destroy everything polish so that Poland would never be able to exist anymore. Prussia melted down the polish Crown jewels. The russians grabbed everything they could get ahold of and shipped it out to Russia. And the Austrians used Wawel as an barrack etc etc.

We get back on the road with Ivar after a night of clubbing. Before leaving Warsaw the team head to a 24 hour vodka bar to sample the true Polish approach to drinking. Once in Krakow Ivar and Julita hang out with Scott Simpson, an American historian who knows everything about ritual studies and drinking behavior. Then onward to to Nowa Huta - a weird post communist neighbourhood. Finally they hit the pierogi (dumpling festival) and visit loads of Krakow bars. Cue drunkenness and vodka. Even more of it...

USA, Canada / Poles and American Poles. What do you think about those two groups and their interactions. [85]

Yep.. yep.. there's no racism whatsoever in Poland , right?? Neo Nazi? I just read an article about them.

I never claimed that Poland dosen't have it's problems, and yes the article was about a Neo Nazi that turned into a jew after discovering his jewish roots.

You have no minorities in which to speak of.. have fun on your frickin' soap box, dude. When will a black guy be president of Poland? PM of England?

Well shouldn't a country be run by it's own blood?

You are a jag off on here getting your jollies on ripping the US constantly. Pathetic really.

Im just expressing my opinions and i dont see many people here talking positively about Poland either :)

USA, Canada / Poles and American Poles. What do you think about those two groups and their interactions. [85]

So what? does it mean that the americans suddenly love each other?

Here is a little hint.

In May 1991, the Census Bureau reported that 57% of American families could not afford a median-priced home in the area in which they lived. This percentage disproportionately affects both African Americans and Hispanics who make-up 75% of these families. The discriminatory housing practices of federal and state governments, coupled with the tremendous rise in housing costs, have resulted in whites, blacks, Hispanics, and other minorities being increasingly isolated from each other. The 1990 census shows that 30% of African Americans live in neighborhoods which are 90% or more black, while the remaining percentage of African Americans still live in predominantly black areas. In fact, 62% of African Americans live in areas that are at least 60% black. As for the Hispanic population, 40% live in communities that are 60% or more Hispanic. While 86% of suburban whites, on the other hand, live in communities that are less than 1% black

UK, Ireland / Do East-Central European migrants in the UK differ? [16]

which is why they don't integrate or care about their surroundings. It's all about the cash; ideally free cash in the form of state handouts.

I blame the Russians!!!

Common stop lie to yourself...

USA is the most segregated country in the world. White hating black, blacks hating whites, whites hating jews in the south, then italians polish mexicans english puerto ricans etc etc hating each other.

So what does american really mean? it's just a word but in reality its all about your roots.

News / Poland could emerge as new European and world power. If? [116]

Erm....I mentioned the Polish-Lithuanian empire, didn't I?

You stated "Yes...you-Lithuania / we-Estonia and Latvia" that's why i came with some straight facts.

But you on the other hand seems to have no idea about the centuries of the Hanseatic League and that till '45 the german language and the german culture was important in Estonia and Latvia.

No i just stated that the germans infact did have an important role in the baltics. And indeed the Hanseatic League was an german invention but could only work with the help of the Polish cities and vassal states. Polish grain for the win!!!

You can read up about the polish grain here

Indeed in the period 1550-1660 every delay in the delivery of Polish grain
caused hunger in the population of Amsterdam as well as in other large Western and even
Southern-Europe towns.

Your problem is what exactly???

Nothing im just writing my opinions on a Public forum...

Well...personal insults won't help you on your way...abit of ass licking would be much smarter!

Well you're denying the historical influence Poland had in the baltic region while im just giving you the facts.

You can read some more in this book if you want too learn some more :)

PS.
I do admitt that Germans also had huge influence in the region, but stating that Poland did not is a lie... Probably something they teach you in the German schools!!!

Life / Do Polish People steal a lot? [330]

if u would like a thread to stay where it is (at the bottom of the page) then use the PM system, if u wish to query it.

Is this something that should be supported? Isn't that kinda counterproductive for a forum?

But i guess that's the little game some of the old folks in this Forum plays ;)

News / Poland could emerge as new European and world power. If? [116]

Well...I do too...there aren't any Germans in the Baltics anymore since '45!
But shared history shapes alot of modern influence...

Polish nobility had huge land possesions in that area and kept many of the important seats there untill the late end of the 20'th century

Might be...but it was hold together by Tito's iron fist and proved an unsustainable concept without said "iron fist".

Iron fist or not, the fact still remains that without the support of certain polish noblemens Yugolslavia would have never came into reality.

News / Poland could emerge as new European and world power. If? [116]

The US had their Wild West and we have our Wild East...;)

And that Poland should use for it's own advantage!

But it's not so clear cut as in Estonia and Latvia the German connections are more prevalent as only in Lithuania the Poles are

You're talking about the population, im talking about political influence.

Or in the Balkans Croatia and Slovenia are more on the german side but Serbia etc. is more polish (I think).

The Yugoslav idea was forged by the Polish Prince Adam Czartoryski.

News / Poland could emerge as new European and world power. If? [116]

Hmmm...I wonder about your reasons!

Well it's much harder for Poland to get a grip of the old Powerhouses in Europe such as Germany France etc etc. While the new states such as Ukraine, Belarus, Moldovia, Balkans and the baltics etc etc always been under the Polish influence in one way or another. Therefore i see it as a good move for Poland to support those countries, and in the longterm this would benefit Poland politically and economically.

News / Poland could emerge as new European and world power. If? [116]

Curios...when Germany tries the same we are branded traitors, backstabbers and what not by the polish media...why is that???

If you look back 100 years of German history you will see that they already tried TWICE to conquer the whole Europe.

Reason enough i guess...

News / Poland could emerge as new European and world power. If? [116]

My point is that Poland is not taking the advantage they got in the east. they care to much about west when they really should look more to the east.

Poland will have the same benefits untill the end of the EU whatever they do, dosen't matter if they send 100000000 soldiers to iraq or afghanistan. But if they start to have a healthy relationship with the eastern countries incl Russia it will strenghten it's position in europe and the rest of the world.

And if Ukraine is to become an EU member then Poland should really already now start to invest there heavily and really show Ukraine that Poland supports them to 100%. This would benefit Poland in a later stage when Ukraine joins the EU.

Ukraine has a lot of potential.

Yes and Poland is so stupid not seeing that...

Only way for Poland to ever emerge as a european superpower is to have strong connections with the east. Make more agreements with Ukraine and start to seriously invest in those countries to the east.

Aslong Poland is the voice for the east it will always be an important player.

News / €11,700 to every migrant returning to the Polish capital and starting a business there. [110]

The problem is that it creates short term growth, people are employed...only until the handouts end.

Kinda reminds me of what happend in the baltics with the bank loans. Everybody was happy to get a beneficial loan from the new banks that started to expand aggressively in the area. They started to buy buy themselfs new cars, expensive flats and many entrepreneurs started to build huge properties that they were gonna sell when completed. The banks even went so far to introduce creditcards for children...

What happend was a total collapse in the area when the financial crisis of 2007-2010 and the property bubble came.

Today those countries still having a nightmare to recover from all of this.

Found an interesting article about it
