Language / Dwa vs. dwie in Polish [85]

I would not have a clue how to get the Cyrillic letters from Word. Why should I?

....because it is one of your pretend nationalities? lol

(don't care to comment on anything also)

Language / Dwa vs. dwie in Polish [85]

darius, Michal speaks old country, "village" language. Perhaps, the same as his wife, hence the "ku". I believe he has no clue about russian language as such, besides learning some at school...There was a perfect "name" for him in the past in regards to the type of polish language that he uses... :)

Based on some "russian" phrases he utters sometimes here, he would is not able to put a correct russian sentence or two even if he'd know how to get the Cyrillic letters from Word...

Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

Have any of you been to a real polish party, where everybody is polish? There is always at least one person who can tell jokes, big time, a comedian wannabe...Ah, the jokes you could hear then! And, yes - they are mostly "substitute any nationality" jokes and a lot of regional polish jokes. You have to know the region to really get the joke. The few polish jokes i heard are mostly really stupid and shallow, some malicious with no sense. It makes me think they came from 'polonophobe" :) and they are just made up.

USA, Canada / What do Polish people think of the USA [287]

Well, most of the commie countries dwellers could not leave - even if they wished or wanted to. Poland always had a kind of... an open door - at all times...

What's the word on the street then? Answering 'Bush is a moran' will not help. We know that. Why should Chechs have the visa free entrance and not Poles?

News / What's the stupidest question asked about Poland? [414]

Michal's stories never stick, in some posts he went to Poland a while ago, in some he left in the 80's and never set his foot back, he traveled all over the world, and would travel if he had the money..."my family in Poland" phrases..."my wife does not want me to go with me to Poland"... Oh, the inconsistent, made up stories, just to name a few.

They used to be enoying...not anymore, as most people know the post are just lies...just like the meat and oranges story. :)

USA, Canada / American people attitude towards Poles in the USA [98]

Americans have no issues with Polish people and if they were any prejudices in the past - they are long gone. All's left is an occasional so-called polish joke, which is mixed in with all other jokes, whether they are Mexican, Irish, Italian, jewish..you name it.

I spent here most of my life and never experienced, or felt animosity toward me.
Americans laugh at themselves plenty as well. Just listen to Jay Leno! Or, his "Jay walking" events, where he interviews "ordinary" people on the street. You would really think that Americans are so dumb, but that's obviously not true, all in the name of comedy. So, next time you hear a good joke, even polish, respond with a better one instead of thinking that the world is out to get you, because you are polish. lol.

And if one grant is not enough, then you get two, or three, or four, or a few grants to meet your needs and wants... :) Yeah.

its time for a fresh face

Yes, it time for a fresh face and i hope we get one. There are a couple of candidates I would not mind to see in the White House, but it's too early to say. I think the next year will be interesting. I'm setting aside some old towels, I'll need them to wipe off the mud dripping off my TV screen.

if it wasnt for Ronald Reagan

...there would be no Amnesty... I would not get a legal status, and I would have to marry some American dude in the 80's to get a green card, instead of marrying for love (which did not do me any good either). LOL.

President Reagan is my hero anyway!

Travel / My impressions from Poland [26]

Baki, I'm glad to hear you had mostly positive experience. The sandals and socks look funny, but it is pretty common in Europe in general. In the US, I see mostly men from India "sporting" this style l... :)

However, what I still look with amazement at, are people who wear shorts and tank tops in 90F weather with socks and gym shoes. I feel like bursting in flames on their behalf... Often, a nice sun dress... with socks and gym shoes! Sandals (no socks) would be great instead, I think.

I guess, it's all cultural.

Language / Instruction how to install Polish diacritic letters on your computer [30]

This is simpler than working with Word.

Assuming you work with Windows XP:
1. Control Panel
2. date, Time, language and Regional..
3. add other languages
4. details
5. key settings - choose Polish (Programmers)
6. add - it should put the icon in your task bar
7. click Language bar next to key settings to see if the adding of the icon to the task bar is checked.

It should work. Then type as usual. When you come to a letter that you want it to have a little "thingy" press Alt & Ctr at the same time and voila: śćżź

Make sure that the language bar icon in the task bar is checked for polish"programmers'.
It defaults to English

It works, if you don't need to type a lot...

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

Its normal process that some words from different language get into polish...

Yes, and it's a new kind of language called Polang. It flourishes in Chicago:

"Dostalem nowa robote w siapie". (shop/factory)
" Mam teraz dobra insiure." (insurance)
" Zamierzam kupic nowa kare." (car-samochod)
"Kupilem dom na kornerze, to mam wieksza lote". (corner-rog, corner lot)

It sounds horrible, but hilarious. :)

Travel / Starbucks in Poland? [149]

I don't think Starbucks made it to Poland yet, but they make pretty good coffee there anyway. Who cares about that overprices latte...I make a better one at home.

I had just as tasty Seattle's Best Coffee at Borders Book Store café today...

Genealogy / How hard is it to get a Polish passport? [74]

Nope. Quite a few posters asked you about your nationality, or your native language, but you never gave an answer. Even the above quote says 'origins', and not I'm British, Polish, German, Ukrainian...whatever, your answers are evasive.

So, why are you ashamed of your nationality? (I know you will not answer this question)
