Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

Feck! I agreee! Poles are monkeys when it comes to foreign language influence. I am especially pissed off by stupid usage of curator of a museum by monkey journalists, while we have a beautiful Polish word kustosz.

Depending on the historical period, borrowing has proceeded from various languages. Recent borrowing is primarily of "international" words from the English language, mainly those that have Latin or Greek roots, for example komputer (computer), korupcja (corruption) etc. Slang sometimes borrows and alters common English words, e.g. luknąć (to look). Concatenation of parts of words (e.g. auto-moto), which is not native to Polish but common in English, for example, is also sometimes used. When borrowing international words, Polish often changes their spelling. For example, Latin suffix '-tio' corresponds to -cja. To make the word plural, -cja becomes -cje. Examples of this include inauguracja (inauguration), dewastacja (devastation), konurbacja (conurbation) and konotacje (connotations). Also, the digraph qu becomes kw (kwadrant = quadrant; kworum = quorum).

Other notable influences in the past have been Latin (9th-18th century), Czech (10th and 14th-15th century), Italian (15th-16th century), French (18th-19th century), German (13-15th and 18th-20th century), Hungarian (14th-16th century) and Turkish (17th century).

News / Forbes: Boot Argentina from the G20 and include Poland [44]

Forbes: Boot Argentina from the G20 and include Poland

Only if Argentina takes over Falkland Islands again.

Poland should stand by her ally, Great Britain, and replace Argentina in G20.

Life / Poland needs more immigrants and their children - which nationalities are the best? [518]

Pawian -means baboon !

Iron, you promised to keep hush on my nickname. Why did you break it?

He throws a dice !

And you are throwing a monkey wrench into it all!

Paiwan,Have you thought about getting into Politics?lol :)

Never. My morale is too high for that monkey business.

I wonder how painful the transition would be.

Some of my students openly declare they don`t want to see foreign immigrants in Poland. But they are minority. Others don`t give a monkey`s.

Travel / Watch out for airport personnel stealing stuff on regional Polish airports. [64]

All i know is...it was in my rucksack before going through the check ...and not afterwards...

You definitely see things. :):):):)

Simply speaking, I don`t believe the theft happened. Risking one`s position or even a lawsuit to steal some lousy phone? Come on...

You just lost it, when you had gone on a binge. :):):):)

That`s all.

Life / Poland needs more immigrants and their children - which nationalities are the best? [518]

I hope you are not being sarcastic.

Never! It is not my style. I prefer to be serious most of the time.

we Poles are very happy with our homogeneous country, and WE intend to keep it that way!

Good for you.

God bless you Poles!

PS. Excuse me, I am waiting for reasonable arguments to dissipate my rising doubts.....

News / What do we think about the plans for parity in Polish politics. [11]

The parity rule became a fact in December 2010.

According to the new legislation, at least 35 percent of all candidates on the lists of all parties running for seats in the 460-seat lower house (pol. niższa izba) must be women. The rule will not apply to elections to the 100-seat upper house (pol. wyższa izba), the Senate.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk welcomed the new regulations but said that setting the quota as 50 percent would be a better solution as it would ensure fully equal representation of men and women. At present, women account for (pol. stanowić) some 20 percent of deputies in the lower house and for only 8 percent of senators.

Taken from the site for law students.

englishforlaw.edublogs.org/2010/12/05/polish-parliament-promotes-gender-parity-pol-parytety/

Funny, but most comments there are negative :
Stupidity!! We're heading towards a country with EVERYTHING legalized. If someone wants to run for seats in parliament then he/she will do it and that's it. Why do we need a law for that? I think now a great search will start for women who want to start in election because a small party with for example 10% of women won't be able to participate in election. Maybe this law was meant to eliminate small parties?

I think that this is not a good idea. It shouldn't be that way. We shouldn't integrate indirectly into who will be elected as a MP. If there's only 20% of women there must be a reason. It's like in business. Women tend to win less prizes, achieve lower salary, start less profitable businesses. If the want to go there they should achieve that but their OWN determination and skills. There may be some facilities to allow women and other groups enter parliament, but artificially stating 35% in my opinion is bad.

This was the most stupid thing they could've ever done. Men are not preferential in the parliamentary elections. Woman can normally take part in the elections without any problems. The thing that there are much more men than woman in our government only means that men are better in this case. They might have better election platform, their ideas are seen as better in other peoples minds. So why should we choose women to the sejm only because they're WOMAN? even if they don't have any idea about politics...

History / What Was Poland like in the year 1988? [50]

You joke, and I mean no disrespect, but,Ive a couple of books published in Poland in the 80s. You know the type, duel language,Polish and English text, showing the glories of Poland off to the Ex Pat community in full colour full plate photographs?

Yes, I have such books and albums too.

Crikey, Krakow looked grim back then, absolutly filthy and grey,

Yes, when I recall it, I feel down.

Amazing job all round I say, what a turn around. :)

Yes, but it still could be better. Sorry, I am a prefectionist - either tip top, or nothing. :):):):)

One more observation of mine.

Check the mastheads in those old albums and see where they were printed.

What do you see?

History / Lithuanians hate Poles? [156]

There is sth wrong with your thinking.

When exactly did Germans save Poland from Russians so that Poles should be grateful? ???????

That is why, I still don`t understand this statement of yours:

In the same way the Poles should be grateful to the Germans.

You need to elaborate.

News / Presidential elections and debates 2015 Poland [472]

Dear guys, Iron and hague,

I do appreciate the fact that you have gotten so absorbed in the discussion in this thread. I am really delighted.

However, most of your posts relate to Smoleńsk issue with such subissues as: Polish Russian relations, especially trust between these two; hypothetical causes of the crash; alleged procrastination of the Polish government in dealing with Russians, etc etc.

Let me remind you that such issues as mentioned above should be discussed in other threads. May I humbly and modestly suggest:
Polish final report on Smoleńsk aircrash ???

The thread we are in now is primarily focused on presidential elections in Poland, prospective candidates and their chances.

I need to take this action of warning you as I feel urged by mods who have endowed original posters with the responsibility for sustaining the threads they commence in the proper order.

History / Lithuanians hate Poles? [156]

Lithuanians hate Poles?

If they do, they are ungrateful. Poland saved their miserable assses for a few centuries. If not for Poland`s war effort, they would have been conquered by Russians in 16 century and today they would be fully russianised like Eastern Ukrainians.
