News / When money dies, blame the Poles. [32]

Slave labor or cheap labor is a zero sum game. It cannibalizes the market by driving down labor costs which eventually destroys consumer spending.

Tell the Poles to come to America they assimilate much better than the Mexicans and are more likely to demand higher wages.

Genealogy / Polish person's average height? [210]

Ogien

What's interesting is that Americans were the tallest back in the WWII era. Nowadays, a lot of Europeans are taller than us which is probably due to nutrition.

Nutrition? Probably due to Latin immigration. Also northeasters are short by American standards.

UK, Ireland / Poles - go home make your country better [40]

trener zolwia

So don't tell me.

You must be from Chicago. I haven't heard that phrase since I left Chi-Town.

I've worked for large and small companies, the Feds and now I own my own business and to motivate people you have to pay'em and give them an incentive to work no matter where they are.

I read on this Board how the English complain how lazy the English working man is but the ones that come to the States work like hell. Same with the Poles in Poland. Poles complain about the Polish workers, but they come to the States and are model citizens. And what's next? An American complaining about American workers, gee what else is new? If the worker has an incentive to work, they'll work. Treat 'em like crap and they won't produce.

News / WHY DOES POLAND BUY GAS FROM RUSSIA? [105]

plk123

with the damned russians it's always going to be a crap shoot.. they'll pull some other shyt in a few years.. don't trust them..

yup but russia is not stable enough to trust them on a long term contract..

Exactly, Poland shouldn't be buying Russian gas. Poland should use its resources. Start building gasification plants for her coal reserves. This is old tech and something that could be completed rather quickly. Start manufacturing methane from animal waste from Poland's agricultural sector. Pump the methane into your gas pipelines. Of course start mining the shale for Natural Gas.

As somebody who has been a driver for these hunters i can tell you that they do not have to be a good shot...

I hunt. In order to shoot game you have to be a good shot. It just looks easy to you.

There are two types of hunters, meat hunters (me) and shooters. Meat hunters are self explanatory. Shooters like to shoot game because they look at game as a more challenging target than a standing target. No one likes to kill, but a guy has to eat. When you eat vegetables you have to kill the plants, it's no different. Farming isn't a benevolent activity. Plowing the ground or using chemicals with No-Till kills wildlife too, but a guys gotta eat.

UK, Ireland / Poles - go home make your country better [40]

its the determination that makes them welcome here,

BS, it's cheap labor that makes them welcome here.

Same goes for lazy Americans.

No such thing as a lazy American. American's are smart enough not to work for what amounts to is a slave wage. Corporate America is addicted to slave labor. Unfortunately when an American says No, there is a Pole or a Mexican willing to work on the cheap with ridiculous working conditions.

BTW the English aren't lazy either, there is no incentive in England whatsoever. In those conditions they're not going to work. When the English are abroad they work.

Same in Poland. Iam sure a lot of Poles have figured it out, that's why you have an unemployment rate of what 10%?

You want people to work? You have to pay'em, and quit thinking that you can increase profitability by cutting wages.

Life / My own thoughts about life in Poland (have lived here for two years) [133]

I've never been to Poland but what you have posted I have surmised from the posts on this forum.

It appears because of the long occupation by foreign powers Poland has never taken a good look at themselves. They've always blamed the foreign powers and have never considered their own deficiencies. You're right, they need to take a long hard look at themselves and quit romanticizing the past. Poland needs to change and look inward. They need to look to themselves for solutions to their problems. Polish society needs to become more egalitarian, more inclusive.

Life / WOULD YOU MOVE BACK TO POLAND IF.... [73]

richasis

I would move to Poland when non-working Americans live just as well as hard-working Americans.

You can always find cheats in any walk of life. If you're going to talk about welfare cheats than you should also talk about the corporate cheats and there are many of them who cost the government a lot more money. 18 billion is chicken feed compared to the trillion dollars spent in Iraq on government contracts.

But wait. Unless you are paying hefty maintanance fees, or have family or friends look after the place, where in the world can you leave your house (I'm not talking about an apartment, where nobody might even notice you're gone) vacant for 6 or more months and expect to find it untouched?

US of A. I have a vacant building for the past 4 years and yes it's untouched by the local yokels. I don't know what it's like in poland but in the US the polaks are much more law abiding. In a Polish American neighborhood you can leave the doors unlocked.

And what is wrong with owning your own home?

Nothing. Everyone should own their own home. Home ownership is in the Public Interest. People can afford to own homes if they have good paying jobs.

Speaking of England I was last there in 2005? 2006? and my favorite place is the Northeast Coast (Northeast Lincolnshire, Yorkshire). I've been all over England (except the Northwest) and I have to say that I like the People along the Northeast Coast the most. Give me York or Scarborough or Cleethrope (sp?). Lovely friendly good natured people. Maybe the reason I like it so much is that it's a heavily ag (agricultural) area. You see plenty of farm equipment on the roads. Just like home. The best meal I ever had in England was in a pub in Scarborough near the castle (whatever it's called). Roast beef and gravy, roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding. Great traditional English meal. There are two Englands, London and the English countryside. I'll take the Countryside (sometimes it's too serene).

History / Polish Civil War after the German Occupation in WW2? [7]

What happened to Poland after the German Occupation in World War II? I was just reading the story of "Inka" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danuta_Siedzik%C3%B3wna

Why was this girl executed? It appears that she was a 17 year old medic rank of a what, Private first class, corporal, buck sergeant? What information would such a low ranked person have that would justify an execution? It wasn't the Germans who shot her, it wasn't the Russians, it was Polish Nationals who shot the poor girl. If Poles are shooting Poles than you must have had a civil war after the German occupation. What was it? Polish Communists vs. the Home Army (AK)? Apparently communism appealed to the Polish People? Why was that? Communism cut across class lines? Who were the AK? Why did the communists feel compelled to kill the AK?

History / United States of America Vs Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth [74]

David_18

This is to me very fascinating, how much alike Usa and Plc are. And this will also be the reason why Usa will collapse just like Plc did.

Don't hold your breath.

Jurgis

The szlachta in Commonwealth were divided and weren't patriots anymore. Everybody was on their own. Creating their own confederations and always asking help from Russia, Prussia, Austria, Sweden and so on.

True than. True in 1939 (France & England) and still true today. Poland continues to look to it's neighbors.

Sokrates

USA is collapsing due to stupid fiscal policies, unsustainable way of life, waging wars that cost more than US can pay and to top all the economic and geopolitical blunders the ethnic group that made up the countrys elite ie white europeans is becoming a minority and losing control.

The USA needs to get its financial house in order but they have the international currency so there is still time.

Sokrates

Poland had a rigid social structure,

And it still does to this day. All of Poland's problems are symptomatic of this fact. Poland needs to engage it's lower classes or they will repeat the mistakes of the past. This is the biggest difference between Poland and the US of A. The US does not have an institutionalized class system.

Work / From the USA, is it hard to study in Poland? [44]

plk123

i don't really agree with most of the people who are saying that you shouldn't even consider college in PL.. it definitely depends on what

I agree, it really depends on the student and if he is going to make the most of his education regardless of where it's at.

But tell me how is it possible to be tricked so easly??? I would understand it if they were some homeless or white trash... but collage students??? AND WORKERS OF THAT COLLAGE!?!? I hope they weren't some phds....
Its just shocking!

There are Rich and Poor but there is no institutionalized class system in the United States.
American educational system is different than Europe. It's based on open enrollment, anyone can attend. Everyone is encouraged to attend, as long as you have the money. Money is available through grants, scholarships, student loans (most common), military service or pay as you go (me) with part time jobs. So you get everyone in the University system from the brilliant to the dumbest. Many people start college, many people finish and get a degree, many people drop out and never finish. Or drop out and go back and finish later in life. The American university is very fluid.

Sweety, maybe it's you that's tricked so easily.. Europeans love to make these vids. Murray State is a little college in Kentucky.. it's not a reputable place. These are 2 guys?? Sorry, with 310 million people yes some will be very stupid.

Murray State is reputable. It's in the Kentucky State system. Probably somewhere around 15,000 students. Kentuckians don't argue, especially with strangers. So they'll go along even if they think everything isn't exactly right.

Unless I have to work, because we don't want to be broke every semester, do we

I paid my way through the University by working in between semesters. I came out with zero debt. It's still possible today to do this in the United States. Of course depending on which State you decide to study in.

Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

Polish jokes were unknown outside the Polish American community until Archie Bunker popularized them in "All in the Family".

Poland was not a fourth Allied power. They're a very young country who have only been in existence since the 1920's.

MediaWatch

In a way you're right. The Leftist element in Hollywood that portrays Polish people and Southerners negatively, don't like them both.

Hollywood did not invent Polish jokes or Redneck jokes. Actually Hollywood were "johnnie come latelies" to the Polish Jokes. Polish jokes were inside jokes among Polish Americans in the 50's and 60's. Hollywood didn't pick up on Polish jokes until the TV show "All in the Family" with the character Archie Bunker. That was 1975 and by than Polish jokes were petering out.

The term Redneck refers to poor rural Southern whites (the peasant would be the Polish equivalent). The term Redneck comes from farmers on tractors looking down at the crops while they plow and getting a sunburn on their neck in the process (I got my college degree in the South and that's how they explained it to me). Rednecks are proud of being rednecks. I listen to Country Western Radio and every second song is something about rednecks. Jeff Foxworthy has popularized Redneck jokes. Foxworthy ain't Hollywood.

In fact Redneck jokes are nothing more than Polish jokes that I used to hear in the Old Neighborhood. Same thing, just change the subject.

After WWII there were a lot of Polish refugees that came to the States. The Polish Refugees (called DP's for Displaced Persons). Well my dad rented an apartment to one of these DP couples and one day I was walking by and noticed through the window that one of their kids was drinking their milk through a glass jar that previously held jams or jellies or something. The point being they were so cheap they wouldn't buy something like a glass cup to drink out of, they would use an old jar that came with jam/jellie purchase. Or when they would blow a fuse they would stuff a penny in the socket and than screw the bad fuse back in because they were too cheap to buy a new fuse. The penny would bypass the bad fuse but by so doing you defeat the purpose of the fuse and the house can catch on fire. So I remember one day my dad arguing with the DP's about not putting pennies in the fuse box. He in his best 1880's peasant Polish and her in her modern Polish (I presume, I don't speak either). I don't think they understood each other. So my dad just bought a box of fuses and left them on the top of the fuse box. But the point being you don't get mad, you laugh. "Ah,they're from the old country ... putting pennies in my fuse box!" You make a joke out of the situation. That's where Polish jokes come from. You don't get mad, you laugh. Polish jokes are a way to relieve the day to day stress of assimilation into a new country. This is where Polish jokes come from.

Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

Who started redneck jokes? Southerners poking fun at other Southerners. The roots and subject matter of Redneck jokes are the same as Polish jokes. No difference. No body in Hollywood or America hates Poles. Actually America in general is rather ambivalent towards Poles and Poland. If anything Poles are ignored, probably due to the fact that we assimilate so easily. If Poles were hated by America as much as you say they are, they wouldn't be third on your chart. BTW who is last on your list? Indians and Blacks. Now these two groups may have an issue with how America perceives them. Not the Poles. Poles are a success story.

Real Estate / Price of a flat for renovation in a tenement house for renovation in Krakow [7]

Residential construction costs in the States range from approximately $100-$200/square foot. 6000-6500/zl is approximately $250/square foot. Quite surprisingly expensive when one considers the median salaries of the two countries. Maybe I should be building in Poland?

Eurola

Only if by recent you mean the people arriving from Galicia in 1800/19oo century ..the emigration of the 70's and 80's were the educated ones. Unfortunately, some still went for the menial jobs to make a dollar and survive... ask your parents.

My folks were peasants from the Poznan area (1880's). So poor they were lucky to get a piece of rye bread (so the story goes). My grandfather quit school in the 2nd grade. Went to work and at some point opened up a grocery store and was so successful that he retired at 35. Of 18 grandchildren approx 14 have college degrees and the ones that don't are para legals, technicians, etc. All well educated productive individuals. this is a typical Polish American story. Nothing unusual.

It was like this. People immigrate to the states, settle in and than another wave comes in a generation later. The Poles that are already here poke fun at the newly arrivals because they recognize the nuances of Polish society which the newly arrived immigrants still hang onto. For instance my grandfather always referred to Poland as "the Old Country". And the newly arrived immigrants held on to their "old ways" and that's where Polish Jokes come from. Polish jokes don't come from Nazi's or Native Americans. they came from the Polish Americans because they recognized the "old ways". Now what's true for Poles was also true for the Irish, Italians, Norwegians, etc.

Polish jokes, far as I know where dead by the late 70's. I haven't heard many since. The latest type of Polish Jokes are the "Redneck Jokes". Same thing.
