Life / does anyone know a department store in krakow? [9]

What kind of gift would you like to buy or are we to come up with suggestions about the gift too?

Bottle of wine, flowers, a mini bar, dart board, inflatable sheep...:)

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

For newcomers, it isn`t.

For historically permanent residents - it is, at unbelievable pace. :):):):):)

Well sort of, right now, other countries are going through some really rough times, that is, things were good and now they are terrible.
If a "boom" is things were not great but it is improving, then there is a "boom".
The problem I find with the word "boom" it indicates a huge one time event like an explosion and money just rains down from the heavens...

Some of the people I talk to can not see the changes because they live here, like can't see the wood for the trees.

I lived here for a couple of years, left for 4 years and I see a big improvement but again I dislike the word "boom" more of a slow and steady incline, boosted since 2004 with immigration (wages had to go up, job vacancies because of people leaving), E.U. funds which account for a large percent of private business and infrastructure but when I first came here I could see Polish people were willing and able to improve themselves and their country, this I attribute to the national passtime of complaining but another way to look at it is to critic and wonder how it can be done better.

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

I was reading recently that the maximum banks interest on a loan per year, with credit cards/mortgages and the like was something around 30% (I can not remember exact %) but for these loan shark companies it can be over 3000% interest.

The same lunacy that brought down most Banks during the first crises is very rife here in Poland and needless to say the country is overbanked.
I get phone calls from the Bank every month offering personal loans and increasing my credit card limit and so do most of my colleagues.

Are you not comparing mortgages (a few hundred thousand/millions) to smaller loans (like 10-100,000)?
Banks don't hand out mortgages here so easily, so they make their money on smaller loans.

The country needs investment and jobs just like any other but i just wonder what would happen if
Ukraine were to open up to the EU. Would we see all these companies shifting shop to another cheap location?
I bet you they will.

Eventually it would but I know people who have invested in Ukraine (promised the world) but it just isn't up to scratch yet of course it depends on what you are doing, these people either set up factories (huge problem with alcohol) or invested in real estate (huge problem with payoffs and mafia).

Is Poland booming as this article seems to suggest?

Define "booming" and then I may respond.

Law / Investment advice - my options in Poland? [50]

I'd say your safest bet is the bank, stick it in a deposit account for a year, you'll get about 6%.

I always fancied buying a load of Maluchs

They stopped making them and if you have a place to store them, they will be worth more in 20 years when they are mostly gone but that's just a fun thing to do, you could also 'pimp' the maluch:

Small car from Poland

An whoever suggested real estate is off his rocker, 15,000 with notary fees, contract etc... buying American bond you'd lose on the exchange rate, buying foreign currencies you'd be as well off investing in Amber Gold....

You could easily set up and company and website for that, if you have any ideas for such a venture.

News / Amber Gold and other Poland's suspicious institutions [139]

The Chairman[25] of Amber Gold, Marcin Plichta, is a former bankrupt and was also convicted of embezzling 174,000pln from 400 customer of his previous business, Multikasy, in 2008[26]. He was given a 10 month sentence, suspended for 2 years. After the conviction he changed his name from Stefanski to Plichta.

News / Amber Gold and other Poland's suspicious institutions [139]

After all ,we are talking about sth which doesn`t pertain to reality anymore.

Pity, I was just going to call my private banker and take out a mortgage @ 6% (all in) and just sit back and watch the money roll in.

7% return for doin nada, not bad.

Off-Topic / "Curiosity" Lands On Mars! Huzzah! Poland's Mars Society Must Be Ecstatic. [77]

I am not sure if that's an actual honest to goodness ET signal

Join the club, nobody is but a man can dream can't he? :D

Personally I think that any life elsewhere will be as alien to us as life in the deep oceans, on the Hydrothermal vent, Lake Vostok of this planet.

Off-Topic / "Curiosity" Lands On Mars! Huzzah! Poland's Mars Society Must Be Ecstatic. [77]

There are a lot of unanswered questions SeanBM.

Possibly some unanswerable too but I'd prefer if we at least tried :)

It might take literally hundreds if not thousands of years of searching to actually come across one signal from another species and we have not been searching that long. So far.

Maybe not hundreds or thousands of years:

wow signal

Before boats, compasses and mapping it took a long time to go from Europe to the Americas or elsewhere.
Who knows what will be invented to make those vast distances short but I think we have not discovered all we can and at our current rate of technological advancement i.e. the moment you understand a new piece of technology means it's obsolete, I think it is our duty to find out.

Another question is, how far would you have to dig down to find evidence of life on Mars,

Unfortunately, due to the price tag (which people blow out of all proportions IMHO) the rovers are sent to 'safe' (or boring) landing spots to maximize the success of the mission rather than areas that could reveal more which are more hazardous.

there are massive dunes on Mars that are the size of mountains.

Exactly! :)

This is cool google Mars.

Isn't it a crying shame to pump untold billions of the taxpayers' money into off-the-wall projetcs of this kind just so outerspace buffs can get their jollies off and filthy rich corporations can get even filthier!

This point is alway raised when talking about peaceful space exploration, who we are, where we came from and are we alone.

The total cost of the MSL project is about US$2.5 billion.[20]

News / Work begins on 'Polish Disneyland' [37]

our theme parks bigger than your theme park, nah nah nah nah nah!!!!

:)

I still think Poland should do a theme park of "Biblical" proportions.

Imagine a roller-coaster through Dante's Inferno, a ghost train through limbo, a bar at purgatory, Jan Pawel T=shirts and lollipops all round.

Life / Is it McPoland? [63]

destroy all vestiges of Poland's unique indigenous heritage

There is a common 'fear' by few members on this site.
You think that culture is stagnant, you also think it too weak and cheap to survive.
''Polishness'' has survived world wars, communism, amongst a whole host of other wars and you think a few burgers are going to crush her, yeah sure.

There is no such thing as a stagnant culture, cultures evolve and change, to think otherwise is pure fantasy and you just pick a date, say "that's what 'Polishness' is" and overlook what Polishness continues to offer.

Plus I'm sick of people complaining about McDonalds, if you don't like it, don't eat it, simple.
And this thread coming from a Pole who lives in North America just adds irony to the whole thread, see if you can spot it PS3 :)

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

12,000 to 15,000 ... to about 4800 to 5500.

Are you sure you're not mixing high-end with low end?

I don't know much about Warsaw but here in Krakow I think 7000 is the average but you can buy for 2000 zloty more or less depending on location and finish.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

Seanbm do you believe that Polish apartment prices will fall to 2004 prices?

No, Maybe late 2006 prices

What is the difference in price between now and 2006?

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

Its just more shite cake that the Poles and investors have to swallow im afraid.

Yep, I agree.

I expect things to get worse next year, with the end of the high from the football and the end of the 2007-2013 E.U. funds.

Unless Poland gets more E.U. funds, I believe they put in a bid with Sweden for more finances and the E.U. will probably give them more since it was mostly spent on what it should have been spent on.

Does anyone have any information on the next E.U. funds?

Poland is still very much a second world country

Could you elaborate, please?

I looked it up on Wiki and was surprised to find this:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_World

And for Third world:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_World

So way to go Idaho. on using cold war descriptions for Poland!
