News / Poland may take the EU to court if they step up pressure -- Kaczyński [89]

KODerast

???

Au contraire, the EU treaty Poland signed did not envisage punitive intervention in Poland's internal affairs

Every step the EU as a whole are taking is strictly by the book. Although the rule of law is something that the appalling Kaczynski has shown he has no regard for, in this case he has to follow it.

Why not consider it local meddling ? isn't controlling the media and hijacking the Constitutional Tribunal meddling with Polish law ?

Absolutely. Poland is a full member state and the current President of the EU is Polish. And yes, the EU as a whole has a function to ensure the rule of law and the independence of the media.

they have no right

In fact 'they' ('we' actually, since Poland is a full and enthusiastic member) have that right and that duty. Poland signed up for the union willingly and after a public vote. As part of the highly beneficial step that Poland took, there are also obviously minimum expectations, ones that all the other countries in the union keep.

News / Polish bishop caught with 2,5 promille [45]

A play on pederaści

Elegant.

If they walked around the church there msut have been four altars located thereabouts.

No, none outside the building.

Ultimately this thread is about that naughty bishop, anyway.

KODerasts

More take part

Not that many actually. In this parish they just walked once round the churchyard and back indoors.

host country which proudly venerates the Holy Eucharist in cities, towns and villages across the nation on Boże Ciało

Most people don't take part.

UK, Ireland / Should an English website in UK have Polish translations? [12]

live part time in Austria and Spain

So basically, it's the key information, perhaps emergency stuff. Or anything sensitive that it isn't easy to ask about.

But yes, search engines can translate whole websites now, albeit after a fashion.

or just some parts?

The most important and relevant parts. Stuff for visitors to the county and emergency info for very new residents who haven't yet learnt to an adequate level to navigate the website and who don't have anyone to help translate. Plus maybe any parts of the site about very personal issues that someone may not want to talk about, perhaps domestic violence.

Worth mentioning that most local police services here in Poland provide little if any online material in English and if they do, English is the one language (other than Polish) that all foreign residents regardless of origin are expected to understand. This isn't unusual - in most places a public sector website is obviously in the local language and possibly parts in English for any foreigners - after all, English is the international language.

I had to learn Polish to survive here; it isn't unreasonable to expect people living in England to learn English, nor is translating a whole public sector website into other languages helping anyone to learn the language or to survive well in an English speaking country.

News / White, Catholic, Polish bus bomber caught [28]

Calvin Klein?

A much nastier brand.

We will have to see if the Bomber claims to have acted on behalf of the Catholic church

Doubtless he has his own twisted interpretation of it, and much else besides.

We will have to see

I doubt there'll be that much publicity. Some nationalist jerk who made a bomb scare isn't news nowaadays.

Slavs are good Christians

we are all grown up full of tolerance and obedience.

The Krakow terrorist was neither of these.

And sadly not a one-off.

islamists

The bomber was not an Islamist - it was a right-wing nationalist loon.

Their standards of ``rule of law`` are flexible. Yesterday one standard, today another, tomorrow some other and so on.

Don't be silly.

Food / Cooking Polish kiszka [99]

some regional thing

Yes, very much from the east. Nice in a stodgy way but not a big part of the diet here in Poland.

This isn't the first such and given the vileness of fascists and nationalists in general, doubtless it won't be the last. At least the rule of law means a very long sentence.

"the bomber was a white nationalist Polish Catholic"

As I suspected all along, Those racists here who suggested otherwise should hang their heads in shame.

Well let's import tens of thousands of migrants from the middle east and north africa

The more the merrier, but realistically the numbers have to be higher.

Life / Streaming online Polish TV [85]

Surprised to find Tomasz Lis on Onet.pl (on air right now - Monday night).

Very respected here, a sound man, a moderate conservative.

FilmOn has all I need.

FilmOn is good

Life / Poland is safe to visit - "Daily Mail" [100]

there are religious police in London, Marseilles, and loads of other European cities. Sharia is the predominant form of law in certain European neighborhoods...

As established here before, there is no such thing.

Work / Szczecin - 10.000 Gross salary for a couple with child [7]

I've never heard of this and it certainly never happened to me before I went out on my own

I had this once - a big drop in income in the summer. It's because they tax you monthly but don't average the annual rate like we're used to. Basically, you pay the lower rate tax at first, then when your income received in the tax year so far crosses the threshold for the higher tax rate you start paying it at that higher rate.

Something you just have to plan for unfortunately.

Btw, 7k net is OK to live on in Szczeciń - probably double what most people get and more than double the income of a lot of people around; north east Poland is a poor region. Nevertheless, those posters are right when they say you won't feel rich on that amount.

Both are a fair assessment; bullying policies are a new thing - even if they're only partially effective it's better than nothing, which is what we had before. The U.K. too is a lot less xenophobic than most of Europe.

We'd probably better continue in random chat, this has gone off the topic.

Which point? That bullying is taken seriously more nowadays than ever before or that the UK is far less xenophobic than most other places, including Poland?

News / Adam Michnik awarded for integrity, professionalism and high standards. Poland's No. 1 fascist? [321]

He repeatedly criticizes Poland... that is not a Polish patriot..

Don't be silly. Jaroslaw Kaczynski, Macierewicz et al have made careers from criticising everything they dislike in Poland and its statesmen yet you would doubtless call them patriots...

The highly respected former dissident, Adam Michnik is right to criticise that which is wrong; this is one of the signs of a true patriot.
