UK, Ireland / Do all Brits take (illegal) drugs? [114]

Strychnine is said to have been imbibed in Biblical times. That's why the Pentecostals quaff it like there's no tomorrow. Another reason to be cautious when interpreting religious texts. That can warp your mind and send you off on a one-way ticket to la-la land.

I think it helps when your country has a happening music scene. Britain has always been at the forefront in many genres and caters for so many tastes. When you are spoilt for choice, you can often over-indulge. My cousin was well into his drugs and he often lived it up during the night but enjoyed his come-down music too.

In Poland, there are many strong musicians too. Not on a par with the range of British offerings but still impressive nonetheless.

Good point, Seanny :) Again, we trust people to be responsible with so many things. To throw away wrapping papers, to honour agreements and not be OTT with drugs. Even if I was that way inclined, I wouldn't trust the vendors. They should be the guinea pigs for any potentially harmful new drugs.

Buckie is legal :) :)

Laced speed is common in Aberdeen :( :( When you see people on it, it can make you cringe.

Don't knock the Buckie ;) It's made by Benedictine Monks, you know? ;)

Class A drugs? Not for me although the morphine in hospital was a memorable experience.

Hehehe. The euphoria was a top sensation, even better than sitting in an old commie block of flats and eating cabbage/pickles and looking out at the Maluch ;) ;)

It was normal to experiment, Zeti. Brits are surrounded by drugs and it's nothing new. Nepalese Black in yoghurt, yes mam :) It's all about perception and my perception of hashish was that it was mind-enhancing. It was just a phase but, then again, isn't life?

The Poles really upped those stats ;) ;)

Joking aside, yes, drugs are a problem in the UK. Some high-profile cases like that of Leah Betts (MDMA, ecstacy) put people off but only in the immediate aftermath. All Brits???? Of course not!

For me as a teen back then, taking hashish was a natural choice (I only did it a few times, mind). We tend not to have hang-ups to the same level of Poles.

Life / Is parity the answer for Polish women? [262]

Social alignment is key. Women can always make a play for more within the confines of the game but they seem to accept the status quo that more men occupy the higher-end jobs and the convention that the man will pay for more things in the relationship.

There is inadvertent parity in a sense :)

Love / THE POLISH DISEASE, wanna marry a Polish girl ? read on... [197]

Exactly! I've seen this in 2 different countries. Around native speakers and in a different language, different sides come out. When they return to 'their own', they then try to fit back into the norms and ways of that group.

Life / Is parity the answer for Polish women? [262]

The sweeping consensus is that she was ushered in by bigwigs that liked what she had to say and not on her track record. She is not seen as the best candidate for the job by those that would vote her in. The EU is an agglomeration of hand-picked chumps!

Good point, Wrocław. However, we know that mechanisms don't really allow for that. Look at Lady Ashton, LOL. She is not the best candidate for such an exalted EU post.

Given that women outnumber men, you should wonder why not? However, we all know how power works and how parity is an illusion in the broader scheme of things.

Life / Jehova's witnesses in Poland - how to deal with them? [110]

People discover for themselves and having an intrusive group thrust themselves upon you is the worst thing. I was forced to go to church as a kid and it really didn't help one iota. Fine, spread the word and let people know you are there. However, you simply have to wait beyond that. Faith and inquiry is a human matter and the individual should initiate that process, not an organised group.

Life / Jehova's witnesses in Poland - how to deal with them? [110]

That's OK, feel free to use it :) Some other impostor here tried to claim my line as his.

Jehovas and Mormons tend to be far more committed. They are on missions, unlike many run-of-the-mill Catholics.

His views do represent quite a few I have come across here. Many live well beyond their means and are happy to mount up credit debts. It's good that speaking English brings out a different side to many.

Life / Jehova's witnesses in Poland - how to deal with them? [110]

I have e-mail contact with one and his Biblical knowledge goes well beyond labels and into substance. He forwarded Watchtower to me. He is far more into his beliefs than most Catholics are into theirs and you can see it.

News / Does it seem to you that Russia loves Poland now? [35]

It just appears to me that Chechens were given some discretion early days as to self determination. They wanted their own state and then Russian leaders realised the problems that would arise. Their access to the Caspian Sea would be jeopardised and that didn't sit well with Yeltsin, Putin&co.

I understand, Sasha. I was discussing that very point this morning. The govt tries to engender violence and hatred but the people cannot or shouldn't fall for that. Why should you be killed by a Chechen for being a Russian that sees the Chechen cause and may even support it a little??

That's not chauvinistic, Sasha, that's just ignorant. My friend also didn't get what he wanted due to saying the word only fractionally different. It is frustrating!
