Love / Sexual diseases! Please tell me how I go about getting tested in Poland? [103]

Vigorous condom splits my ass, sad mofo ohh yeh.

A couple of months ago we broke two in a row and tossed the rest of the box. It wasn't anymore "vigorous" than usual, only time that it's ever happened. We're using them to keep from having to buy expensive baby clothes, it wasn't all that dramatic when it happened.

edit: just realized that WB quote could be taken way out of context :)

USA, Canada / Going back to the Old Country of Poland after more than 25 years! (from USA) [249]

No Mod, I haven't. We have a saying here in my part of the States that "life gets in the way". I think that's what happened to me. Regretably, I haven't stayed in touch with my family for most of those years....About two years ago I've started reaching out to my cousin. He has received my overtures with tepid enthusiasm, which I can't blame him for. I'll keep trying.

Well User, that's pretty damn interesting. Heading back to the beast after years going cold turkey. A lot of people have posted write ups about their experiences, but most of them were after a few years absence, and usually they were in contact with family/visited.

Here's one:

You're coming from a very interesting position. I'd be really interested to hear your expectations, and how you get on.

Anyway, good luck.

Language / Changing Polish punctuation? [23]

However, ever more frequently the full stop or point (.) is being used for this purpsoe according to Western norms.

What Western norms? The rest of Europe uses commas...

edit:Just noticed Adams post.

USA, Canada / Not everyone that lives or comes from America is RICH! [300]

An "awesome president"?! Hmm hmm ... that's why the protesters on Tahrir Square wanted to get rid of him.

They got rid of him not because he was a tyrant, but because the price of food was too high... These people want Bathist style socialism...

Commodities are already on their way up all over the rest of the world...Let the second round begin!

USA, Canada / Going back to the Old Country of Poland after more than 25 years! (from USA) [249]

I came to Poland for the first time when I was 21 in 1978. I left in 1985. I returning this September after all these years. Please help me imagine the changes I will experience upon my return.

You haven't been back to visit? Do you stay in touch with family (I assume you've got family here)?

Life / $3,000-$4,000 a month - would we have enough money to live in Poland? [273]

My condolences. Did you lose it, or not renew it because you knew they wouldn't sign off on it? If it's the latter, thought about LSA? There are quite a few ultralights (light sport) and gliders are starting to become popular again around here. If you're interested in flying over here, just let me know.

Life / Poland's population growth problem [44]

The Polish population has been growing for the last 5 years. In fact, there were only four years where it was in decline...and the total decline for those four years was less than the increase in 2008. Again, the truth is that classroom sizes are increasing, it's incredibly difficult to find a parking space, trams and buses are stuffed full, doctors are seeing more patients, and apartments are all rented out. None of those would be the case with a falling population. Even if the GUS statistics are lies (why?), the eyes are difficult to deceive.

In my personal opinion, it would be nice to see the population drop to 1960's levels. 25% less people would be a good thing as long as Poland manages to control immigration. Wouldn't it be nice to run the factories, and not work in them? Concentrating wealth in fewer hands works wonders.

Life / Poland's population growth problem [44]

The population was never in decline. Some people left due to economic issues, the birth rate was still higher than the death rate.

With regards to the Ponzi scheme, it's like all social welfare/pension schemes, you need more replacement workers for the system to continue to function. Thus, scaremongering about population during a time when classroom sizes are larger than ever, and the infrastructure is being pushed to the max.

Life / Poland's population growth problem [44]

Poland never had a population problem. It was all a bit of scaremongering to keep the ponzi scheme going.

Real Estate / Do any UK banks offer mortgages for Polish properties. [37]

I do agree with Mark that prices are high relative to average income...that of course highly depends on which country you're basing your comparison on. What most people don't factor in is that plenty of people have inherited property, and another big chunk of people do have jobs earning enough money to pay for the new properties. There is another sizable portion of the population for whom real estate is way too expensive, and they're not sitting on any property...those people are screwed. Mark is right about that, but the longer that I'm here, the more I'm convinced that those people are in the minority. Apparently the demographics here show that 60ish% of Poles live in urban areas, and apparently that percentage is dropping as more people move into suburbs and commute to work...from areas with cheap housing.

Dunno. Interesting you should mention land though. Someone asked a while back what the best way to invest $100k in Poland would be, my answer was land. I don't own any real estate, just land...honestly, pretty happy with that decision. Especially after hearing your explanation on how much it costs to build here in Poland.

If I had plans to live here long term, I'd definitely buy a place. As an investment, I think there are much better places to put my money.

Law / The Stock Exchange - Poland (GPW ... or WSE). Do you invest? [34]

And they will in 2011 since FED keeps printing. The FED is the biggest holder of US dept.Budget deficit 1,5 T. Don't US "borrows" money from US?

Yes, the US Treasury (public) owes the Federal Reserve (private) roughly $5t for typing a couple of numbers into a computer. That is an awesome business model.

Commodities will beat stocks in China, Brazil and other emerging economies this year as inflationary pressure curbs equity gains, said Societe Generale.

I completely agree. Lots of folks are losing confidence in most types of paper...that will only drive up commodities more until panic mode sets in and metals start getting pushed up again...

And from the deep end....
Guessing by that point, the dollar will lose it's status as the worlds reserve currency and literally be worth nothing. No reserve currency, no value at all. I'll be glad to have invested in that AR15 and the reloading bench. Yea, I'm coming over to steal your water and rice.

Real Estate / Do any UK banks offer mortgages for Polish properties. [37]

Just wait for the bubble to burst.. No price increase since 2007.

Why would anything burst? People aren't having a problem making their mortgage payments, and while demand is down, it's still there. Most housing in Poland is owned with no mortgage. Zero. Zilch. I'm guessing those folks that thought luxury apartments would be a good idea are probably screwed right about now...the people building moderately prices houses and flats are doing pretty well.

There is a world recession!

Really? Most economies are doing alright.

Love / Arabs: "Polish women are easy and stupid" [132]

And meanwhile in clubs and pubs all over Poland, Polish men and women are finding their life partners between choruses of Kumbaya playing from the speakers.

Stop the presses...people have sloppy drunken sex while on all inclusive holidays to resort towns?!?!? Say it ain't so.

Polonia / Polish-Chechen relations [19]

What do you mean? ... she lost her children! ...

She killed her children through her stupidity.

These are the words of a moderator at this discussion forum.....

Yes they are. Don't like those words? Don't want to hear my opinion? Well, I'm really not too worried, this is a discussion forum after all....

Should this woman be given a medal for dragging her kids over the mountains during the winter?

Have some respect for humanity

No respect for child murdering idiots. Sorry. She killed her children.

Here's a bit more in depth writeup about the general situation: krakowpost.com/article/675

Work / What kind of job can I find, can I make descent money in Poland? Coming from Canada. [33]

It's actually not a bad idea. You'd need a distributer and a truck big enough to make it worth your while. Apparently there are special conditions for import into the EU from Iran. You'll also probably have to throw down lots of cash in Turkey as a deposit on the customs duties. You see lots of vehicles being brought down that way, might be an idea for you to make money on the way down and on the way back. Iran is pretty hardcore about import fees though, I'm sure there is plenty of paperwork that needs to be done, but maybe you can hook up with someone down that way to do the paperwork and you just drive it in. The roads in Turkey up to the border at Gurbulak are ok. Sometimes really narrow, after winter they'll probably have bomb crater sized potholes. You probably already know what the roads are like in NW Iran.

News / CHERNOBYL...threat to Poland? [29]

It fragments the surface/core ... which causes many natural disasters...

The explosion is conventional, much less powerful than underground nuclear bomb testing.

Thorium reactors are looking very promising.

Life / Are Poles Dis-Loyal [58]

This guy is obviously in the labor industry, hence the lack of education. He has a right to vent his anger at Poles stealing his work.

I think Stanhope sums it up quite nicely:

youtube.com/watch?v=nW20EMJr6o4

The immigration numbers should have been capped from the very beginning, talk about an out of touch government. Thing is they still haven't done anything about it.

Absolutely. Kind of difficult to backtrack on it though.

News / New Polish Light Tank - Anders [74]

Given that Poland is a flat country yeah it needs tanks, lots of tanks.

But without air superiority, tanks are nothing more than target practice. The Iraqis learned that lesson.

Generally light tanks are useless pieces of junk but Polands decidents in military matters have a long standing tradition of stupidity.

I'll drink to that.... *sigh*

I assume that the threat is from Russia, but it doesn't make much sense considering the amount of heavy armor that they have, and the highway of flatland between the motherland and Poland.

But then again, the main purpose of building this new beast is probably going to be export, and not real defense. It's up to the marketing guys now!
