UK, Ireland / The Changing Attitude Towards the Poles in Ireland [21]

"Ireland and the rest of the World"

Its going to be like that in many countries, some worse than others. Ireland is a small country where nationalism is a important part of their history, so its going to be more like that.

UK, Ireland / Mentally ill people in British society [55]

Is it common in Poland to see a lot of mentally ill people on the street? By common I mean almost all the time [every or every other day even]. Remember I don't mean disabled people, I mean mentally ill people.

Its far more common to see mentally ill (drunks) people in Poland than in the UK, the US is even worse. London has the biggest problem in the UK, attracting so many from around the world. In Poland they are in every village.

In the UK the mentally ill are sectioned or hospitalised quickly.

if they are sitting in a cafe, and a mentally ill person who is sitting with their carer,

Hmm , so actually you object to sick people being cared in the community? lol.

Life / My Słowianie (music video mocks stereotypes about Poles and Slavs) [46]

I'm not so pathetic that I can only take pride in what a country does; I take pride in what I do and satisfaction from what I do: why not try it some time?

+1

Well, put. It summarizes the parasitic nature of 'Nationalists' - I'm great because of the actions of others.

Life / My Słowianie (music video mocks stereotypes about Poles and Slavs) [46]

This is causing a bit of a stir.

Slavic culture is sometimes portrayed using images of piety, simplicity and a rural idyll. Not least by Slavs themselves. But a racy music video from Poland that has been watched almost 17 million times on YouTube challenges those stereotypes.

Law / Registration of right hand drive cars in Poland - possible? [82]

- 3,520 people were killed on Polish roads in 2012;
- Poland saw 93 road fatalities per million people, which makes it the third worst place in the EU for population-adjusted road deaths.

Ture, but at least thats an improvement on the previous years.

Travel / In last place was Polish airline LOT [22]

Thats one opinion. However the Norwegian issue is with one of their aircraft, not the other and they are still having serious problem even though Boeing have put it in intensive care when they threatened to return it for a refund.

You buy a brand new aircraft you expect it to work as promised, not require a team of 15 Boeing engineers battling every day to get it into the air. Many other airlines are having multiple issues, such as ANA (second biggest 787 operator)

None of this is a surprise, the innovative all electric systems (So much new technology in the 787, its never been done before.) were predicted to be unreliable, and the first 60 had to be extensively re-worked after assembly (think custom rebuild specific for each aircraft). Hundred of thousand fixes for each one after it left the assembly line.

ANA have 23 aircraft with 5 on standby...

This has been totally blown out of proportion by the media.

There have been an incredible number of technical issues with the 787. The media have not blown it out of proportion, they have vastly under reported the issues.

The dispatch rate of the 787 is very bad. Here's a discussion of the latest issues with the 787.

News / Emigration from Poland (2.1m Poles are living abroad, most within Europe) [37]

Poles mostly do some simple work abroad which is not in demand in Poland

In the UK, in my experience, its entirely dependent on being able to speak English. If its good enough, Polish skills and experience are accepted and employment at a same level is possible.

Three of my friends -
One is working in shop, minimum wage (poor English, but no work experience at all in Poland); another worked as a Internet marketeer (good English and experience in Poland) paid £20k;

the third is a conference organiser/manager (good English, lots of relevant Polish experience ) paid £25k.

And obviously for Nurses (or other in-demand professions) like my wife, well paid employment in her field is the norm.

List of countries worth of emigration is shrinking in a rapid rate. Germany, Switzerland and Norway left

Obvious UK and Ireland is still 'worth it' as these countries are very popular with Poles.

Travel / In last place was Polish airline LOT [22]

787 has a lot of reliability problems, some airlines are not impressed and its done Boeings reputation a lot of damage.

I'm not going to fly on it for a few years, let everyone else be a guinea pig.

Travel / In last place was Polish airline LOT [22]

Guys, check the wiki article I provided a link to. The LOT fleet is not that old. The oldest plane they operate is a Boeing 737-400 from 1993 and the Embraer models are dated 2004, 2006 and 2011. There's something really fishy about this. Without knowing the specifics of the flights, I really find it hard to believe.

The London-Warsaw flight uses their oldest (and noisiest) aircraft, the Boeing 737-400.

Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Departure: 06:30 London, United Kingdom - Heathrow, terminal 1
Arrival: 10:00 Warsaw, Poland - Frederic Chopin
Airline: LOT Polish Airlines LO286 e
Duration: 2:30
Aircraft: Boeing 737-400

The 787 is certainly quieter but flies long haul to the USA.

Travel / English cigarettes - where to buy in Poland? [41]

L&B yes but I don't know about Regal.

itabak.pl/index.php?c=797&lista=11&Papierosy_L&B

A lots of them are made in Poland so they maybe slightly different, I wouldn't know as I don't smoke. Smokers seem to like them.

Life / Cigarette prices in Poland [27]

Look at the link Pawian posted, its will give you the type and prices of cigs available.

I found buying them at local shops a bit of a pain because they don't keep large stocks. They maybe a bit (10%?) more expensive at the airport shops (there are 5 shops airside in Krakow airport) but you can buy as many as you want up to the personal limit. Check each shop (two upstairs, three down) as the prices vary slightly.

Life / Is 10500 monthly is enough for a family to live in Warsaw Poland [136]

Is the premium for SAP people really so high ?

Yes.

However, contract rates for all IT work is £400-600 per day (up to £900 for very specialised skills) so 15kpln is just about enough given the lower cost of living.

So, 15kPLN for a SAP programmer in Warsaw is nothing special. For instance, SQL DBA's are paid more (20K)

Only few small countries have lower tax in Europe

He's paying more Tax in Poland than he would in the UK. However, if he setup a Polish company he could pay 19% flat tax.

Food / PIZZA & KETCHUP served only in Poland? [159]

That doesn't mean one can't say on a discussion forum that they think it's tacky.

Eating pizza is tacky. Criticizing what other people put on tacky food is hypocritical.

I'm making Pizza tonight, I may add ketchup.

Food / PIZZA & KETCHUP served only in Poland? [159]

Outside a famine zone, that's what people do. And I choose to think - as a fair few other posters in this thread do and doubtless many more in real life, that ketchup on pizza is trashy and on a par with instant coffee (people buy that?), readymade mayonnaise (buy an egg and some oil), artificial 'non-dairy cream substitute', pasta salad and 'mild cheddar'.

Or buying a Pizza instead of making it yourself? Firstly you are mixing up your taste and what is 'trashy'. Some people like mild cheddar, others prefer non-saturated fat for their white coffee.

Some people like ketchup, most people in fact and it is very healthy - mores than fresh tomatoes. The E211 is an unusual and exceptional ingredient for Tomato Ketchup.

Who needs to? Your body 'differentials' for you whether you want it to or not.

.The issue is adding ketchup to Pizza, not whether your body can magically detect something that is probably not in the ketchup or sauces that Poles put on their Pizza.

As long as it stays under the cheese, that's fine.

Oh dear, all sauce MUST be under the Cheese. Are you a Pizza Nazi as well as a Pizza Snob :)

That ain't pizza. Or rarebit. Or croque monsieur.

With proper tomato base, Mozzarella cheese, olive oil and toast you can make better pizza that most pizza joints.

Real Estate / How the Poland property market became a HUGE bubble [35]

Just about bang on target, 5 years after the crash prices start to rise. The capital leads, naturally.

It will be a slow recovery. Wages have risen 20% and prices fallen even more so we must be at the balance point.

Food / PIZZA & KETCHUP served only in Poland? [159]

It's nothing like

Tomatoes, fried onions, sugar and herbs are the ingredient of Pizza tomato base.

The only major difference is the vinegar - which is an enhancement to tomatoes natural acidity. The 'spices' are among others, All Spice (English Spice).

I use Garlic, bay leaves, mixed herbs (oregano, Marjoram, Basil etc). pepper, even a little smoked paprika. But there is nothing in Heinz Tomato ketchup that is incompatible with Pizza.

I bet if you made a pizza with a thin layer of Heinz ketchup as the base you would not find it 'wrong', especially if you added garlic and the herbs.

We are talking about Cheese and Tomato on Toast, not caviar. I suppose its an essential food source to people who can't cook, but fundamentally its simple food for the poor.

My local pizza shop make their tomato sauce fresh every day.

Good for them, I assume them serve it to be added to the Pizza after serving?

Enjoy the benzoesan sodu

Can you differential E211 in tomato products?

And how do you know thats it not used in the tomato puree they made the pizza base with?

You are picking and choosing what you don't like while buying industrially produced food without any ingredient label of any sort.

If Poles like to put tomato sauce on their Pizza (home made or industrial ketchup) then let them, its nothing wronger than eating Pizza in the first instance.

Food / PIZZA & KETCHUP served only in Poland? [159]

It's considered a little unsophisticated by many (in the capital anyway), but still persists.

Its almost the same as the tomato sauce base mixture. But I guess these 'sophisticates' have never made proper pizza have they?

There is nothing particularly wrong with adding ketchup to Pizza, people add worse. In Southern France, Chilli oil is a standard addition to Pizza.

I always add an bit of ketchup to any pizza or pasta tomato sauce base I make. Its also an ingredient to Salsa, chilli and Pad Thai noodles.

A BIT being the key, not spread it all over.

Travel / How does wizz air compare with ryanair? [32]

First, its a fuel emergency not mayday. Second, it was a particular airport due to weather conditions and Ryanair were not the only airline affected.

Thirdly, its not an accident, simply a demand to jump the queue and land first.

I don't like to defend Ryanair, because they are *****, but crashing because of incompetent airmanship is infinity worse (AirFrance and many others)

Travel / How does wizz air compare with ryanair? [32]

Also never heard stories about them like about Ryanair, e.g. planes having to make emergency landings because they ran out of fuel.

No.. other airlines have fatal air-crashes instead.

Ryanair, for all their dislike-able features, have never had a passenger death or serious accident.

A refueling stop is also common with a lot of airlines, especially with winter flying from east to west in the USA because of headwinds.
