It reads like some of you are trying to justify why people left here for there.

Well the thread reads "why would someone leave poland for the us", so I wrote why mine left, and a majority of other Poles... for a better financial life.

I look forward to Americans coming BACK here for work and complaining :)

I do not :)

Most people who immigrated were common folk who lived in villages, and had a choice to do a long commute to a bigger city for low pay, or work in the fields and be a poor hardworking farmer forever. Hence the lines in front of the US Embassy were packed each and every day.

that is not true of thos who came to USA in the last 20-30 years. a lot, and i mean a lot of educated people skipped Poland because of the commie opression.

the country folks, if you will, were the ones who immigrated at the break of the 20th century.

Life was crap for a lot of people so we went to America, where there was opertunity.
Life is better here now and America is suffering.

nah. some maybe suffering but many are doing just fine. it's all in how you set yourself up.

Its an old saying passed down through the generations

I disagree. In Chicago, most of those who immigrated from 1970-1990 were not "educated". Those that were, got their degrees translated and were professionals once again. The masses went to factories, cleaning jobs, and became contractors.

NEVER! Not in a million years. I have more work now than I ever had.. I am hiring on.

This is not what I was told by a Polish doctor from Warsaw
He told me that he makes a staggering amount of more money in the US, than he ever made in Poland.

Our hospitals are full of Polish and Ukranian care givers.

it only matters if you are born in america?

yeah, that's actually how it works. you have no rights otherwise.. unless you actually become an american.

so what you are saying that only if you are an american can you criticize america? please, how egocentric can you be? american should accept the opinions of others to improve their staggering country. the system is deeply flawed.

There is nothing here for Europeans. NO culture!

I feel sorry for you that you forgot your culture and are left with none.

No, that's not how it works.

“Give me your tired, your poor; your huddled masses yearning to breathe free; the wretched refuse of your teeming shore; send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” If you have ever had the privilege to stand beneath the Statue of Liberty in New York, you would have seen these words inscribed on its base. For over 100 years these words have called out to people from all nations—welcoming all, no matter who they are, to come to America.

welcoming all, no matter who they are, to come to America.

Except for those on the no-fly list.

ok so for those that want to limit the freedom of expression of immigrants to america do you think that your ancestors didnt complain when they arrived? I am sure that mine did...

I'd assume that at present Poles could leave Poland for the same reason as Russians could. Looking for material wellbeing and better life in general. Some are happy.

Krakowianka

wow.. you have no clue do you.. for one, those words were inscribed by a foreign power... the french.. for the other, things don't work that way here in the USA, not at all.. tell someone you're not ana american citizen and see how long they listen to you then..

same thing with the immmigrants.. some were country folk but a lot of inteligensia left during the commy times.. more of them then your country folks.

the biggest country folk migrations were during ww2 or just after and all the migrations prior to that.

ok so for those that want to limit the freedom of expression of immigrants to america do you think that your ancestors didnt complain when they arrived? I am sure that mine did...

that's just all idealistic, just like krakowianka's regurgitation but that is not the case on the ground. it is exactly how sledz stated it. you don't have to believe it but that is how it is.

there? which there are you from? if you're from the states, maybe you don't get out much then because any and all foreigners are completely discounted in most circles.

hi there, just joined the forum, so i thought i'd share some thoughts with you.

i left Poland basically for three reasons:
1. my entire family was in US since the late '80's
2. i didn't really see myself achieving anything in Poland, but then again... it was a poor judgment on my part
3. didn't want to join the army :D although with my medical condition i'd probably get a category D, i wouldn't want to risk it ;)

loco polaco you seem like a jealous & ignorant person. People must not listen to the crap you spew and you say it's like that for all immigrants. Wake up, I think you have problems...not like immigrants. Your screen name here fits you loco

doubt it. i'm "suffering" from the rib cage deformation. all my ribs grow inwards. why would they need a guy in the army, who can barely breath as he runs? lol

they even give a category A to a guy with no legs... :)
i'm just kidding but nobody wants to go to the army now days so they take everybody...
:D

nowadays they say that poland will stop mandatory service and have a professional army in the future. I havent met anybody who actually served in the army

So what I'm seeing here, as a basic answer to the original question, is that someone would leave Poland for the US because they think they will have a brighter future and/or more money in the US. Whether that is true is always subjective, obviously, from the posts here.

well yes it does work for many people without a doubt. america still provides the idea that anybody can become a millionaire. the uk for instance doesnt have that sort of rags to riches story behind it. but at the present time america is not the preferred destination for poles looking to work abroad. uk, sweden, norway or even considering the current economic situation many are staying put in poland or even returning from abroad
