Green Card Marriage ad leads to arrest

The Feds are watching.

cnn.com/2007/US/law/12/07/green.card.ap/index.html

Yuliya Kalinina, 24, spelled out exactly what she was looking for in a husband in her Internet ad:

"Green Card Marriage -- Will pay $300/month. Total $15,000," the Russian national wrote in an ad placed on the Craigslist Web site. "This is strictly platonic business offer, sex not involved."

The ad caught the attention of the man who would eventually marry her on February 17, 2006. But it also alerted agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

I've seen some topics that talk about a similar thing. This article just re-emphasizes how illegal this activity is.

She was fair enough to admit what she was looking for. I guess it's not worth being open about what you really think these days.

I'm sure it was one of the Craiglist "national" user who reported it to FBI, not FBI itself.

I remember that one thread on this forum asking for the same thing. There was also another topic where the guy was an illegal alien having a relationship with a Polish girl. I think he was from Mexico.

The point is some people feel comfortable to share their plight to break the law in terms of immigration. They really need to watch out what they are saying.

Can I go to the government and tell them to arrest my wife (whom I may not like anymore) because on the day she married me she said she liked my car (more than me)?

I know a guy who married an American woman and as soon as he got his green card he started abusing her, so she got the marriage annuled because he admitted it was only for the green card.

ICE was notified. We'll see what will happen now....

Green Card Marriage ad leads to arrest

She did place a very "obvious" advert. Can I believe that someone didn't know it was illegal? I don't know.

How much investigating needed to be done though? Married on Feb 17 2006, yet the article is dated today and they were only arrested last week?

Another question is this...if they have been married for so long and neither has caused any problems and have both worked and contributed to USA for this time (whether in love or not) do you feel they should be prosecuted or not? (I am aware of the law - it's a general question). It's a pity they will be, the actual act may be illegal but it doesn't seem like they've hidden it considering it began with a public advert.

A very good friend of mine was unwittingly involved in a Green Card Marriage. He was duped by an Italian lady. They met in Las Vegas, and after a short love affar, they were married. They traveled to Italy, met her parents, etc. Three years later, she left him.

Guy on double-decker bed next to me in jail in Arizona, with Polish passport where I was
waiting for trial told me the same. He was bleeding from the skin because he was to heavy
for the hard bed. The mattress is only some 2 inches.
He married divorced. From immigration papers thea new where to find him.
This how he go arrested (in July 2007).

But his marriage was true. Not for the green card.

PLEASE DO NOT GET MARRIED IF YOU HAVE POLISH PASSPORT TO FIX IMMIGRATION.
This may lead to give your address to ICE. Then they will come to arrest you.
We were kept with some 200 Mexicans, El Salvadorians and Guatemalians together.
The guy who fall like that was only reading bible.

Nota bene he graduated law from Warsaw University. Das ist mann!

and after some 18 years in States !!!

I actually heard of a related story. A lady marries a guy and tricks him into thinking that their relationship was real. After marriage, the lady starts acting in a manner that causes a lot of frustration in their relationship. She files for abuse and gets some sort of an amnesty.

How much investigating needed to be done though? Married on Feb 17 2006, yet the article is dated today and they were only arrested last week?

I have been seeing a lot of PolishForums.com post show up in my Google searches. I'm not sure how long Google stores that information in their system, but it is scary to know that any posting could be stored in another location for a long time.

Green Card Marriage ad leads to arrest

If you find that your life is in a mess and the only way out is a green card then you'll get the benefit of the doubt from me. Just don't lie to your partner and don't get caught out with an obvious advertisement.

have been seeing a lot of PolishForums.com post show up in my Google searches

Sometimes they are top of the first page. I've used google/yahoo to find some of my own posts. With 'key words' anyone can find anything in an instant.

Yes, don't get me wrong, a law was broken so there must be some kind of punishment...but they never really attempted to hide what they were doing. Yet others will get away with it. Such is life I guess.

just because they did it in plain sight doesnt make them less guilty in the eyes of the law.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I mean that it's typical such "up front" people will get a punishment for this yet more sinister characters will get away with it.

I agree with that. They married in Feb '06. You'd think the feds would be quicker than that!
