Actually Americans thınk that they are quite likeable and that everyone likes their products.
Americans believe in mass production and smoothening of cultural differences of people to low level in order to achieve it.
When they believe stereotypes,it is because they think economically.It has no meaning for them to take minority variations into account because it is counterproductive in mass production climax.

For example it is more beneficial economically to make a drink most people will like(coca cola) or eat(hamburgers) than to make a drink most people will not like(like it happens in Europe) and appeal to special audiences.That is why they are interested in mainstream opinion and public view because it is the most economically significant where they can focus their time.

In the tens of countries I visited in the past America and Americans were perceived negatively.(I remember that Canadians travelling abroad used to wear little Canadian flags on outer clothes to show they weren't Americans.) Only in Poland the view of Americans was positive. But that was a few years back; today the Poles don't seem to be pro-American any longer.
