Polish workers found hung in Herefordshire

I can't find the origonal storey I wanted but it was on these lines.

They live in a fenced camp, are housed in caravans for six to ten people, with shared washing facilities and have problems with water and electricity supplies.

"They told us of fees they were being charged for basic services that we know should be free, of being left without overnight accommodation, and even more worryingly, reports that they were not receiving free medical treatment when they needed it. "Most of the workers were from central and eastern Europe, and feeling really vulnerable. To the T&G, it was clear that they were being exploited."

Hopefully after this double tragedy more will be done to improve the conditions that these people find themselves trapped in!

RIP, let's not nit pick, two people are dead, which is very sad in deed.

Torney, this is a Polish forum hence the reason the post was created about two Polish people who are dead, I dont think it was a slight on the UK and I also dont think they topped themselves because they couldnt aford to get back to Poland - maybe no one will ever know.

I agree that tornado2007 needs to appreciate that those who post on a Polish forum (be they Polish or not) are going to be interested in such stories.

I very much hope that the reasons why these guys did what they did is not connected to any bad experiences that happened to them here. However, having read one of the articles posted here where it states that:

"The work manual at S&A Produce's farms tells workers there will be a jacuzzi and sauna, a gym, and basketball and football area."

I have to say that anyone really thinking that this would be the case at a farm where the job is to pick strawberries, would have to be rather naive. I've worked for some pretty big UK based companies and have never had anything like that. A vending machine and somewhere to sit down to eat a sandwich is often as good as it gets.

As ShelleyS said, we may never know why these guys did what they did, but if it was in any way down to their work situation, I hope the company feel suitably ashamed.

Hmmm. It's not impossible that these sorts of facilities could be provided. A simple hot tub and cupboard sauna, bike machine, dumbells plus a yard with a net hoop would do the job as far as the discription goes. Giving people flase expectations is a different matter

Absolutely

I hope the company feel suitably ashamed.

If their employers are in anyway to blame then I hope they suffer more than shame

An update from the horses mouth

There were actually 3 deaths connected to the farm in this time period - 1 guy hung himself, 1 guy was stabbed and 1 guy was kicked to death in Birmingham

The police are saying very little at this stage and speculation is rife - the farm is largely run/controlled by Latvians and Lithuanians and there is talk of a mafia connection. A number of Eastern European British embassies are sending members of staff to investigate possible organised crime connections

As for the sauna, gym etc - the farm does have various bits and pieces like this and is apparently well equi[pped

Mafia connections ? They're picking strawberries !

How can things get so complicated ?! I guess it might be a "front" company for a whole load of other nasty stuff.

The things some people have to go through just to try and earn themselves a few extra quid.

I hope any wrongdoing is dealt with severely (fat chance with the British justice system I know, but we can but hope).

They're picking strawberries !

Yeah, true. But what the horse mentioned was a possible connection with illegal tobacco

I guess it could be a money making scheme that's gone horribly wrong somewhere, probably someone got too greedy or in too deep.

A stabbing, a hanging and a guy kicked to death just seems like something out of a movie.

Maybe the simple reason that they hung themselves was because they were emotionally weak.

Exactly, depressed without exhibiting outward signs.

Noimmi, u've changed a bit :)

Yeah. But keep those 'discussion provoking' arguments coming

changed for the better ?

So far yes, but what's happened ?

Has someone hacked into your pc and you're someone else entirely ?

Or have you read/seen something on here or elsewhere and done some serious thinking ?

does not account for the one who stabbed himself to death...or the one who beat himself to death....

To be honest I would get pretty depressed working on a strawberry picking farm! It all seems a bit suspect to me 3 people killing themselves in such a short space of time. Was talking only the other week to a guy from Wrolclaw who collects bodies for a living from the UK and brings them to Poland to be buried, He explained that suicides are quite common which is a shame. They could always get home so I can't see that as an excuse, You can get a Ryanair flight for next to nothing, Must be someone trying to keep the there...

RIP

The "Shame" of failure... it's saddening that people come here to improve their lives and end up in such dire situations and taken advantage of at in a surprisingly large amount of these cases they are being taken advantage of people who are not British...

Both deaths are linked to personal reasons, but the guy who hunged himself later, heared the news about the other one....
As to a farm and living conditions, I have seen photos on web of caravans, where they live - quite sad really; small, basic eqipment, overcrowded. If I find it, I will post it here.

In 2006 there was a TV relation about this particular farm. Conditions at the time were shocking there and also the way the workers were treated by supervisors was horrible. Conditions improved since there. There was a long story about this farm in this week's Polish newspaper in the UK, but unfortunately only in Polish.

Yes that's true! The whole story was about English company exploiting Poles, but many of supervisors were actually Polish. And they also treated workers badly (I am talking about 2006, don’t know how it is now)
