Look at their history, they've both been a** r**** by their neighbours. Both are very hospitable. Both like to complain. We both fight our case strongly. Need I continue?

Yeah the North of Scotland is abandoned. Just some rogue haggis kicking about up there...

History does show some conflict between Scots and English yes. However, the ruling of a quarter of the world was by the British Empire which, strangely, included Scotland.

Scots do welcome Polish people in general but then again, we always have done, just as the Polish welcomed us in Poland. There's a good article posted in the Scotland thread about Scottish/Polish history but I doubt you'll bother to look for it.

Scotland did pretty well in their group. Had we beaten Georgia, we'd have been home and dry. Beating France twice is shite is it? At least we didn't draw with Macedonia, AT HOME. Ruling 1/4 of the world is nothing to be proud of unless u r an imperialist. U ought to read The Scottish Enlightenment sunshine, to see the impact we have had on the world, yeah, little old Scotland. Some of the best inventors, engineers, politicians, u name it. Try reading that b4 u get on ur high horse

Britain is a nation of immigrants and migrants.Millions of british people have gone overseas and become immigrants themselves in Australia,New Zealand,Canada,USA,and more recently Spain etc.

For 400 years Britain had the largest empire in history and benefitted and got rich from the hard work of people in India,Africa,Hong Kong,Carribean etc-as well as the hard work of British people themselves. This is the reason there are many people in Britain who originated from those former colonies.

The Polish coming here in large numbers has added to the diversity and with their similarities (enjoying football/alcohol)but also differences(traditional cooking/worship) they set a good example. There is enough work for everyone in the UK but there are sad whingers in every nation. The mostly decent Polish people are welcome here.

Someone speaks sense. From Britain's very roots we are immigrants.

I agree with this. If you'd told me a few years ago that I'd be learning to cook Polish food, struggling to learn the Polish language and that some of my best friends would be Polish (or that I'd be a mod on a Polish forum ;) I would have told you "don't talk crazy" :)

I wouldn't have it any other way now.

Immigration has enriched and improved Britain for centuries - the UK would still be in the stone age if people didnt come and go so much.

Yeah right ok.. you idiot!!....When comparing the achievements of Brits to any other Country......I think you will find us Brits will run rings around anyone!....They say Britain invented the modern world....What with the Industrial Revolution...Worldwide web...Computers...TV...Radar...DNA....Telephones...Jet Engines etc....Without us Brits i think all of you unachieved people would still be living in the Stone Age don't you think?

agreed ajgraham, poland has a large european population but has contributed so very little to the modern world.

Scotland is a country of only 5 million but has hugely and unproportionately contributed vast amounts to the world, and britain has a whole makes huge contributions.

what has poland done for us.

Isthatu has done my bidding for me, PLEASE read 'The Scottish Enlightenment' Wrocław boy, it'll show u that the Scots shaped the modern world. It has a whole chapter on how we excelled in America. England has done some good things, I've just forgotten what they are. Yeah, telly and vodka, what a nice combo.

There are clubs in places like Torry in Aberdeen to teach Poles the Doric dialect. That'd be hilarious, walking into a Torry bar and being asked by the Polish barman, 'fit ye fir, min?'. They are quite popular. I've heard that Poles don't want to integrate in Edinburgh that much, well, fair enough, but learning dialects is showing an effort to integrate. When I use Silesian dialect here, the students love it as it bridges gaps

I've heard that Poles don't want to integrate in Edinburgh that much,

Probably it's true that some Polish people in Edinburgh don't want to integrate but then there are some Scots in Edinburgh who don't want to integrate with anyone either! Even other Scots.

A couple of my friends have picked up words like "aye" and "ken" and "dinnae".

Aye, it's a braw moon licht nicht the nicht! :)

True but then again, every place with a large Polish population will also include some Poles who don't want to integrate. That's life... My Scottish is grand...it's my Polish that lets me down... :)

Most of those Englishmen have Scottish ancestry. OK, Bell and Baird did some research elsewhere but they are still Scottish. At least we produce more graduates relative to the size of our country given that u guys charge high fees for Further Education. Why? Because u wanted to Scotland in the UK so u gave us a sweetener. Without our oil revenues, u'd be much less rich than u r now

I try :) It's a slow process :)

telephone...they were invented by a number of people outside of Scotland.

Read this gmu.edu/departments/seor/student_project/syst101_00b/team18/whoinv.htm

Bell was Scottish but the telephone was patented in US. Still it's inventor was a Scot.

Exactly, he was a Scot. Polski to trudny język/Polski jest trudnym językiem, ne? I don't want to get into attacks on the English as many of my friends are English. That's an English trait, trying to gloat about how they are better. They have their good things and we have ours, so what? It's pointless arguing as they know little of our accomplishments.

They all have Scottish Ancestry do they?.....I take it that comment was just off the top of you head right?....and how does a Country of 5 million people pay for a country of 55 million?
Seanus  15 | 19666
29 Dec 2007 /  #205
I didn't say they all had, I said most. I didn't say Scotland pays for England either, on the scale that u envisage. It's u guys that want to keep us more than we want to keep u. The Scottish Parliament (1999) was a sign that we wanted more autonomy and the SNP has grown in voice in recent years.

A report written by the Scottish Office economist Gavin McCrone for ministers[16] in the mid-1970s indicated that with ownership of North Sea oil, an independent Scotland would have "embarrassingly large tax surpluses"[17], that the economy of an independent Scotland, with control over the majority of UK North Sea oil revenue would have the one of the "hardest" currencies in Europe and that "for the first time since the Act Of Union was passed, it can now be credibly argued that Scotland's economic advantage lies in its repeal
