In 2001 we used Avis. At that time we booked over the phone, and specified that we were going into Poland. When we got to the airport in Berlin, we made our way happily off to the rental agency and proceeded through the check out procedure. Keys in hand, I clarified that there would be no problems going into PL, and the Frauline behind the counter got this priceless look on her face and said in her best German/English accent: "This is not permissible!"

She then went back through her records and ended up giving us a car that could go into PL (one of a lesser value - for insurance purposes I'm sure...) and we were on our way.

At that time, we had to show proof that the car was able to into PL when we crossed the border, but the last time (2005), no proof was required.

Moral: Always ask if there are any issues getting a car into Poland. At that time, we had to show proof that the car was able to into PL, but the last time (2005), no proof required.

By the way I ended up getting into a small fender bender in the first car and had it expertly repaired (for less than 20$ Cdn) in the woods outside of Bialystok.

I rented a car from Sixt in Berlin last september, but also had to remind them of my itinerary. Initially I had booked a Mini Metro, but once they heard I was traveling to Gorzów Wielkopolski for the day, they quickly switched me to a Ford minivan. I was going in to pick-up curtains, not bring back a team of builders! But Sixt was less expensive than anyone else, so give them a try.
