The U.S. government does not have the authority to grant rights to other nations' citizens.

iraq? afghanistan?

They are not citizens, even the ones who *used* to be before taking up arms against the United States.

padilla?

Yep....those guys. Notice habeas corpus isn't listed anywhere in those "inalienable rights", nor is there any provision to grant said rights to citizens of other countries...

right.. it's only been around since the freaking 1400s and all the other free nations uphold it, yet the 'champion' of democracy will suspend this basic right? is this actually a democracy at this point? seems king george got you snowed. ;)

They probably know more about being an American than most Americans born here.

It has occurred to me, that the fact that the country was built of immigrants who came here for freedoms not found in his/her own country, might be part of why freedom is such a prized value here, maybe more than in other places........????

Hate to burst your bubble, but Hippies were a subculture movement of Beatniks from the '50s, who moved into San Francisco in the EARLY '60s. Also referred to as Hipsters. They moved into the Haight-Ashbury district. Hippies were at their height in 1967, and 1969 at 'Woodstock' was basically the end of the movement. Tendrils of this early '60s counterculture movement went around the world, but all things come to an end.

Thus, we can break it into the following:
Early Hippies: 1960 - 1966
Summer of Love: 1967
Revolution: 1968 - 1969

I don't see 1970s mentioned in there, unless you wish to count -

Aftershocks: 1970 - Present

That is MANUFACTURED, and Commercial, simply to make money off of people! You had to live it, in the 1960s, to be original.

Ergo, to say your dad, Rocky, was a Hippie in the 1970s, is in error; he was a 'rerun' like a television show, I'm sorry.

You can look it all up, it's been in books, etc. Of this, you can't argue with, sorry.

My dad was a "hippie" in the 70's. It was more of a lifestyle though.

Cool Julie, this means I have been a hipppie since I was born and now am in aftershock. I am pretty lucky! Now I know why I had such long hair one I was a baby. I was a baby hippie!

outintheyard - you are an original.

Zgubiony - Ah, that is different. Yes, your father could have lived the lifestyle of a hippie.

I personally called them:
Art Nouveau - early 1900s
'Flappers' - 'Roaring 20s'
Great Depression - '30s
'Zoot Suits' - '40s
'Beatniks' - '50s
'Rockers' - '70s
'Punks' - late '70s, early '80s
'Betty Crocker Death Rockers' for the '80s
'Goths' fit in there somewhere, early '90s with 'Skinny Puppy'
Becomes a blur, when everything blends in the mid '90s.
Oh, can't forget the 'Kinder Goths' of the late '90s, early 2000s!

There, summed up the 'The radical teenagers' to the present in a blink of an eye. Really, every generation cries out, and it's the same thing.

Of course, I also found that the leader of the Hippie movement was a long haired, bearded man, 'a Carpenter named Jesus', who said not to have possessions, and to help each other.

So, it appears that I just covered the cultural basics, not through all of history.

Perhaps Christians are the original Hippies, and I'm in error. ;)

Yah my dad still calls himself an ex hippy though. HE has alot of pictures of him at hippy fests and such. HE did alot of drugs and had long hair. I count that has hipppy

So , do you think all the drugs in your parents affected your birth?
OP RockyMason  19 | 250
29 Feb 2008 /  #48
U moron u think my mom did drugs? My mom was a goodly catholic school girl all her life! She still is! My dad quit doing drugs a while before he had me lol. My dad is actually kind of prude in my opinion now! Effected my birth in wat way? I mean obviously my dad's crazy years postponed him from having kids for a while. They did keep him in college though he went to college forever for his BA. Least he has one though!

US being a corporate entity (remember: America’s business is business) has powerful military to protect big business. Prudent businessmen try to do it the cheapest way they can. Like in any other enterprise there is a choice between using people or machines. There are some jobs where people are less expensive. Manpower comes at indifferent costs. It would be rather silly to take intelligent (highly paid) people and use them as a cannon fodder. Thankfully there is a sufficient pool of dunces (or economically desperate) to “volunteer”. Not much schooling is needed, several weeks suffice. After all what is required is to follow orders without hesitation (“yes sir” is the only allowed response). With a bit of propaganda we have them ready to be sent to places they never heard of and to kill people they did not know existed. There is no problem of eliminating independent thinkers, these are too smart to be coerced to join. One can paint a bright future awaiting them after all that, graduating from college, buying a house. Somehow many choose a carrier of being a prison guard (another noble profession) and keep those who while equally desperate were smarter and tried to make money dealing dope. In the meantime Exxon got a second biggest proven oil reserves to help themselves to. I is not their fault that poor dumbfk can’t afford the gas for his car. There is no money for schools (spent for wars), no problem, will have more “volunteers”. Aren’t you lucky to live in the best and the freest country in the world.

Yes...I catch your sarcasm, Janekb. Your last sentence laced such brings the new US in the correct light. I can only hope that with a new president (finally!), some good will come.

BUT I pay much attention to the representatives in the house and senate, because they wield the real power - and I vote, write in, email them, and watch them.

seeing as how most people in the military are low paid! =)

Rocky its apparent that you dont really appreciate those who protect your lazy
arse , you can fight real well on this forum and b*tch and moan well put your money
where your mouth is and join the army or marines and see how long your little
gumby self lasts... I would really love to see that.. you would probably last a hour
if that.. afraid of breaking a nail...

If our U.S military wasn't what it is, you wouldn't need to ask those questions. We're a prime piece of realstate. I'm quite sure there are countries who wish they had this chunk of land we call home.
