Xawery Żuławski's film 'Chaos': does the Polish DVD have English subtitles?

I've just spotted that there's a Polish DVD (on the SPI label) of Xawery Żuławski's debut feature 'Chaos', but I can't find out whether it has English subtitles. I'm guessing not, but does anyone know for sure?

(I saw his second feature 'Wojna polsko-ruska' last week, hence my interest in his earlier work)

Well, I made an extensive online search (websites of SPI, Merlin, Empik, google images search and other sites) and everything seemed to be confirming that there are no subtitles ... until :

Item on Allegro
Picture of the DVD back cover

I'm not sure if you're familiar with Allegro ("Polish e-bay"), 3 sellers repeat the standard (mis)information, but 2 other sellers say differently and I somehow doubt the seller would take the hassle necessary to photoshop the back cover of the DVD :)

That's what it says on the back cover:
Sound: Polish DD 5.1 / Polish DTS
Subtitles: English
Aspect ratio: 16:9 / 1.77:1
Extras: Scene selection (12 scenes), trailer
Region: 2
Colour
Duration: 123 minutes

I also found elsewhere that it's a 2-layer disc (DVD-9)

Other seller's description, also mentioning English subtitles, but no picture of the back cover

I know Polish distributors suck at making good descriptions of their DVDs, in this case they probably didn't care enough (the movie was a total flop at cinemas).

That is brilliant - thank you so much!

I was looking for a scan of the back cover, as I agree with you that Polish distribution channels are worse than useless - and I can just about make out 'Napisy: angielskie' on the one you linked to, which pretty much clinches it. And I agree with you that there'd be no point faking a back cover - if someone ordered it and it didn't have subtitles, you'd just end up with negative feedback.

It was so cheap I was tempted to order it anyway (I have a close Polish friend who's a big fan of 'Wojna polsko-ruska' and wants to see 'Chaos' too), but now I can do it in more or less complete confidence.

Thank you so much for looking into this, I had the same question!

Xawery Żuławski's debut feature 'Chaos'

I saw that movie during the film festival. It was just disgusting; basically a catalog of pathologies (incest, drug use, alcoholism, sex orgies, family dysfunction etc). Made me wanna puke. Most people walked out.

Wojna polsko-ruska is listed on dvd. Does this have subtitles?

According to Empik, yes.

That's not exactly 100% reliable, but I can confirm that English subtitles exist in some form, as that's how I saw the film at the Era New Horizons festival in Wrocław - so presumably it wouldn't have cost much to slap them on the DVD.

Michael B,

Does the 6 DVD set of Dom have English subtitles?
merlin.pl/Dom_Jan-Lomnicki/browse/product/2,697716.html

According to Merlin the individual parts do but I can not find any info on if they set has them.

Thanks!!
Richard
