Hi everyone.

PLEASE no offensive comments or racism

I received an enquiry from someone, a black (African) girl who wears scarf wishes to visit Poland (i think to study). She wants to know how she would be treated, would she get alot of racist comments, looks, threats, be in danger?

I guess if she would get treated as such, she would try going to another country. Although i am Polish, i dont live there so hard for me to answer.

Thanks, i am after honest, to the point answers, but please dont go into debates about scarf etc, this is not what i am after, just how in general she would be looked at, and most importantly, would she be in danger (like would she be spat at, or harrassed?)

thanks

There are many black people here who study medicine and other subjects. However, only a fool would guarantee a racism free stay.

Have I? Yes, but that was watching a footie match and I saw the same in the UK. Away from 'charged' venues, I don't think Poles are that bad at all. It would be bearable but it depends where u go. There are hardcore idiots everywhere

She will be at "double risk" in Poland, I have no idea how the black people are treated here, but this visible muslim thing (burka) makes her target for any anti-muslim sentiment, while our troops are in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Just imagine TV news: "several Polish soldiers killed by Iraqi/Afghan partisans", as a consequence some people would turn into blaming all muslims for that, I'm not talking about physical violence, especially towards a woman, but some verbal agression would be present, you never know.

Anyway if she wants some first hand info she should get in touch with foreign students in Poland to hear about their experiences.
There's something like:
Stowarzyszenie Studentów Muzułmańskich w Polsce
Muslims Students Society in Poland
Tel.(+48)856514021 Fax.: (+48)856520901
student(at)islam(dot)org(dot)pl

Maybe they would have more information, advice.

^^but you know, the soldiers wouldn't be in any danger at all if their leaders simply decided to get them out of harm's way.

thank u Krzysztof for that, i will forward her that number.
Well it seems she would be ok, as long as her clothing doesnt stand out too much and perhaps she just avoid going out alone at times where things are tense. There are very subtle burkas, like the way many European women wear, i have seen some of the older ladies in my family wear this little scarf etc in Poland. I dont think anybody lol hassles them!
