Do I need a license to ride a scooter that is <51cc in Poland?

A lot of people here tell me that I don't need anything, but I can't find any strict information about it.

Also what about insurance, I suppose I'll need bike insurance and accident insurance. Can anybody recommend a good company?

I want to buy one to help me get around, the busses and trams drive me nuts now. Will it be ok in the winter? I've never owned a scooter or motorbike before.

Regards :)

Hello mrmcenglish,

Yes, of course and insurance.
It is a part of the E.U.
I can't help you with companies but the insurance works different to England, the vehicle is insured, I think this is a better system.

Apparently you don't need a licence, but I'd appreciate some concrete information on this too...

I don't know either - they have been changing the rules recently. But I am not sure how much respect there is for the law anyway. Seeing people with no crash helmets and 10 year olds on scooters is not uncommon.

But to answer your other questions - no I don't think you could (safely) ride in winter, it would be too slippery and too cold most of the time.

If you do need insurance then it won't cost much. I only paid something ridiculously cheap like 50 zloty for my bike insurance and that's on a 1200 cc machine.

I think this is a better system

It's better in that you can lend your vehicle to anyone and not worry about who is and isn't insured. It's worse in that your vehicle needs to be continuously insured by law even if your vehicle is off the road for 6 months of the year (e.g. my motorbike in winter). That seems silly to me...

You don't need a licence for a scooter with an engine smaller than 50ccm and a speed limiter (50km/h AFAIR). Ask in a scooter shop, they'll know.

Does anyone actually use a speed limiter? The local kids here are always talking about what they've done to their bikes to make them faster.

50km/h would be deadly on the roads of Poznan, anyway :/

Thanks for the info, it's all a little hazy though still. I think i'm going to just try to get my license here and skip the 50cc thing. I want to be able to use my bike in the winter, so I think i'll be better off just buying a honda or something like that.

Does anybody have any links to websites 'free' online motorbike written tests or something with similar questions in Polish. It will help me prepare, and know which words to learn.

Thanks again:)
