Is this Biedronka store something like Costco in US and Canada?

That has to be an urban legend. I simply cannot believe that to be true.

One way to find out for certain. I'll ask when I'm next in the store.

I'll let you know tomorrow or Monday.

A person friend here in Bydgoszcz, who worked in Biedronka a few years back, just this week won a court case against them for unpaid overtime. His award was 10,000zl, but the case took 4 years in court.

He says the diaper thing is true.

Its just hard to imagine these girls sitting there wetting themselves because they are not allowed to go to the toilet.....if this is really true i think i am going to devote some time to making sure this gets in the national and international press...its got to stop....If somebody tried to enforce such a policy in the UK , or any other EU country there would be a mass walk out....

I haven't heard about such details in this shop but I know that when we had 20% of unemployment (previous crisise) Biedronka was the wrost employer. I am not so sure about behaviour of your citizens in such situation (20% unemployment no social seciurity) I hope you are not going to see it.

BTW you are very helpful.

20% of unemployment

Well now Poland has less unemployment than UK , and has to wake up to European law....I have heard so many horror stories from friends who work in Poland , and i myself worked as a driver for a company where driving illegally long hours was the norm , they even employed a guy as a truck driver that didn,t have a licence.....After six months hard work , where i was paid half what the Polish drivers were getting they got rid of me without any reason given....I am guessing it was time for me to get a contract.....!

I think that Polish bosses are going to have to change things if they want to attract back all the Poles that have left Poland for other countries....

Poland has less unemployment than the UK, OFFICIALLY. Unofficially, who knows? Also, if 2 million Poles returned, then the situation would look rather different.

Biedronka, nice store. There is one not too far from where I live. They have some good products at affordable prices.

They are very similar to LIDL back home. LIDL is here too, I know. Their own brands are quite decent, cheap and cheerful until the doctor's visit comes round ;)

For anyone who works in Biedronka, I say this: "come and work with me on a nursery in England". I say this because most shop workers are female and we've only had one Polish lady work with us in the last 5 years, and also because we have lots of hedges. If you need the toilet, you just pop into the bushes - no nappies required. A lot of people stick to the same job for years and years because of a combination of thoughts that they can't do anythingh else, that job security is better, and that hey at least the nappies are free! Ladies are not expected to go "do krzaki" and there are perectly good facilities provided.

By the way, I am drunk right now. I'm hoping to sober up soon, but this seems unlikely. My guests have left what's left of the vodka on my table, and there's only a little bit of Polish ham that they left to soak up the alcohol.

LIDL

They also have a weird and wonderful blend of "other things" they sell. You never know when some good cheap power-tools or bicycle lights might mysteriously appear there. I've had some very nice cake from Lidl in the past, the same cake as they were selling in the very expensive deli I go to sometimes.

Shouldn't you start a seperate thread about that? Doggie does.

Spot on OsioĊ‚, they sell NZ white wines at discounted prices. Drops well worth quaffing on the weekends. Sorry, how could I be so uncultured? ;) For sipping :)

still find it hard to believe all this....

Talk to a local Pole, and they will confirm the stories about Biedronka workers wearing diapers, it was on the news a while ago. This is not some urban legend made up. When they stopped paying for overtime, and made people work for free, and on this un-paid time, they couldnt even take a 15 min break to use the facilities, people made the news. Yes some sued, most could not afford lawyers. The people that work at a Biedronka are usually desperate for a job, otherwise they wouldnt be there. 600-900zl they make there is better than sitting at home and making 0zl.

Biedronka has replaced 3 PLUS stores here. It is very similar in layout really. Nothing special.
