Having recently met a lovely Polish man we are having difficulty understanding each other and communicating on a far greater scale..He has lived in England for ten months with a few other polish men who all live & work together, is this normal?

He has no free time as he works ten hour days so can't go to any courses to learn |English quicker. I want to help but i don't know what to do...?

Other posts on the forum would suggest that this is normal for some groups of Polish folk.

It's up to him to show willing.

If you want to help him you could ask him for twenty minutes of his time... after work each day. And then see what happens.

Am I right in thinking you are hoping to develop this into a relationship. It can make a difference as to how you approach the [translation] matter.

we have been seeing each other for 1 month and have had some nice times together but the communication is rather basic and gets frustrating for us both :-(

littlestar,

The only thing I can think of at the moment is for you to learn a little Polish. Using a little of the language might help you in conversation. It might lighten the mood when you get it wrong... a little humour helps.

I'm sure there are plenty people here with better ideas than mine. Just give them time to reply.

I have been in the same situation, believe me time is the biggest help, if i look back to when i met my girlfriend things were hard and frustrating but now things are great, it just takes a bit of dedication, one thing i would say is too learn polish along with him learning english.

If he works 10 hour days, that gives him 14 hours free, I'm sure he could squeeze some time in somewhere!

When I first started seeing the Polish lass, last summer, her English was poor and my Polish was terrible. Yes, it led to mis-understandings and frustrations, but also a lot of learning and laughter.

I presume he has some kind of Angli-Polski phrasebook and you have an English-Polish one too? (if not, get one.. you can pick up a decent one for about a fiver) Try and learn a new word or phrase, every day... and as you're online, you can find no end of free language stuff to have a practice with while he is working.. so you can surprise him ;)

Try byki.com for a decent and free basic Polish lessons...

who all live & work together, is this normal?

most polish tend to house share with friends to share the costs of the house and bills equally amongst them ... some share with same sex, some share with relatives, some share with partners/gf's/bf's etc ....

I want to help but i don't know what to do...?

just keep at it and if there is something that needs clarifying more then do so

:)

The company I work for hired Polish workers from an employment agency. Three out of the four of them lived in the same house (whether they liked it or not). Where living is expensive, you can't expect everyone to live in their own place.
