History / 1939: the road to tyranny. Is it happening again? [14]

Hairball, you are so obsessed with this idea of "End of America"! How can you live your life successfully if you have only one thought in your head, how can you be productive at all? And, what's even worst is that you don't even live in the U.S. (I think a Pole living in GB, right?)

So why would you even care?

USA, Canada / Gas prices in America [127]

It looks like the U.S. citizens are doing OK in comprising to the Europeans as far as gas prices go.

In the GB gas (petrol) is £1.10 a liter = $8.15/gallon.
In the U.S. the price of gas is $3.0/gallon = £0.41/litter.

On the other hand, the price of gas here is cheaper, but we drive way more then Europeans do. We drive far distances, almost nobody takes public transportation here, average car makes about 12000 miles/year ~ 19200km. I drive 30 miles=48km to work (which is not much at all) and it takes me about 20-25 min to get there. It would probably be at least an hour or two with the public transportation.

I wonder what would happen here if the gas went up from $3.00 to $8.00/gallon, the price in the UK?
I bet you people would start living closer to work or school, the urban sprawl would probably stop and maybe public transportation would become more popular.

Love / Shall we go back to interracial relationships for a bit? [50]

If it was up to me I would make it a law that everybody would have to date people from other races. The World would be a better place then.

white women are made by white men they are our women

Zynf is just a very sexually insecure man, that's all. One of the racist stereotypes (true or not, I don't know, you ladies tell me) is that Black Men have bigger hmmm... 'tools'. One may say that this is a positive stereotype, but in this case it backfired because of a large number of sexually insecure White Men (ztynf), who just simply freak out when they see a White Woman with a Black Man. lol

USA, Canada / NO VISAS to Canada for Poles in the near future [62]

I understand that because of the oil sands there are a lot of high-paying jobs in Alberta, CA. And although the Visa Waiver Program for Canada doesn't mean an automatic work permit, probably it would make it easier to obtain it to a Polish citizen rather then a citizen of a third country.

Maybe some Polish-Canadians here could help our Brothers and Sisters from Poland with some information helpful to find an employment there? From what I read the jobs are well paid ($80,000+).

"Some of our competition are offering signing bonuses in the order of $20,000 Canadian ($18,000 U.S.) ...," says Neil Camarta, a project manager at Petro-Canada. "Some companies are offering an incentive package where, if you stay a couple of years, you get a bonus then, which may be in the range of $50,000 to $100,000."

News / What do Polish friends think of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton? [226]

Both Obama and Clinton want to renegotiate NAFTA, at least officially. The thing is that Hillary was all for it when her husband put it in place. So either she was wrong then or she is lying about it now.

Bush will go down as one of the worst presidents ever.

I would say THE worst.

Krysia, my apologies for hurting your feelings (not!). I should have let your words speak for yourself:

Americans don't have much choice for president: One's a woman, the other a black guy. All we need is a gay president. Hahaha

So, how is your life in the Nazi Party?

Does anybody drive a Prius here? What's your opinion about it?
For those who don't know, Toyota Prius is a hybrid electric vehicle. It's not the only electric hybrid available on the market right now, but it is the most popular one.

It's supposed to get 50 miles per gallon on a highway and 60 in a city. I know, it sounds strange, but it does better in a city then a highway.

Prius

I have test-drove a Prius last year, but decided to get something else. A friend of mine's got one, and so far it's doing well. I wander though how well it will do in a harsh weather such as severe cold or triple digit heat. And another thing is, how long is the battery going to last?

PS. The oil price has just hit another high: $105/barrel...

News / What do Polish friends think of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton? [226]

Did you guys hear that Rush Limbaugh is boasting that he helped Hillary in Texas and Ohio, and he is encouraging Republicans to vote for Clinton in the Democratic primaries? He believes that Hillary will be easy to beat.

Rush Limbaugh pushes GOP for Clinton in Texas

Also, Poles in America, if you are basing your vote purely on the candidates stance on Poland, please reconsider.

Agree.

You're right Shopgirl; it does charges itself up when braking. The technology is called regenerative braking. Instead of using traditional brakes to slow the car down, you're using the moving wheels as an electric generator transferring the energy back to the battery.

This way you're able to recapture the kinetic energy and reuse it later when it's time to take off again. It's sort of like winding up a toy car I guess :)

USA, Canada / NO VISAS to Canada for Poles in the near future [62]

I just heard on the radio that Polish and the US governments are negotiating this very issue right now in conjunction with the anti-missile shield. The VWP is probably very close now.

I wish we could work freely in Canada, just as we can within most EU.

I wish Poles and all the EU citizens could live and work both in Canada and the US and vice versa. That would bring both continents so much closer. Heck, I'd like to see a deal like that including EU, N. America, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. The whole Developed World should be a free work-n-live zone, if it was up to me.

I have been to Canada 2 in winter and early fall, and I am absolutely in love with this country. I would love to live there, I met wonderful people, and life is so much more peaceful and better than here in the UK.
Anyway back to the visas-now

I think the biggest difference is that there is too many Poles in the EU at the moment (not their fault); therefore you can see some anti-Polish xenophobia (also understandable).

News / Should Polish citizens living abroad have the right to vote in elections [69]

There is a difference between the migrant workers who are living abroad temporarily and Polish expatriates who have emigrated out of Poland and are living permanently in other countries.

The migrant workers want to vote in Polish elections and they have every right to do it.

Most Polish people living abroad who are not planning on moving back to Poland will not vote in Polish elections because they don't fallow Polish politics and quite frankly they don't care.

Janek, you're assuming that it is impossible for Americans to vote in a woman or a Black Man for a president, and IMO you’re simply wrong. You’re trying to apply your way of thinking into an American society and that's probably because you live in a different culture and simply have different life experience then an average American.

I don't see anything wrong with having a woman or a Black Man as a boss at work, a judge in a courtroom or a President of the Country, and I don't know one person who would find it wrong or troublesome.

This election has already proved you wrong, since it is the busiest Democratic primary election in history. So many people want to give their vote either for a woman or a Black Man that the election stations are having a hard time keeping up with the huge amount of citizens wanting to cast their vote.

Life / What Do the Poles Think about the Abolition of the Death Penalty? [48]

“An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”, proclaims the proverb and the Poles enthusiastically agree.

Actually, "eye for eye" is not just "a proverb"; it came from the Bible, and that's how it became a building block of the Western Culture:

exodus 21:23-21:2723

If any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

The Bible is full of exerts supporting the capital punishment:
Genesis 9:6:

"Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man." (KJV)

Genesis 4:11-15.

"And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;...a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him."

Feedback / Editing topic title by Admins or Moderators [10]

The old title of a thread 'Open letter to the European Comission for embargo for my deportation' was changed to 'Open Letter to Europenian Comission 20/01/2008'. Why?

IMO the old title created by the thread's author gave us a little insite to his way of thinking. And most of all it was funny!

There are plenty of thread titles on PF with grammatical errors and nobody changes them. So why changing this one?

PS. BTW, it's 'European Commission', not 'Europenian Comission' :)

It wasn't changed. It was merged to an already existing topic.

Food / Good Polish Wines [74]

Poland and Polish People have no wine tradition at all.
You could say that Poland has decent Vodka and Beer, but what they sell as “wine” over there in most countrys would not even be considered wine. Often it is simply fermented and sometimes carbonated fruit juice.

Most Poles had never tasted or even heard of every day wines such as Merlot, Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. How would they know what a real wine supposed to taste like?

Try Polish Beer or Vodka instead, you won’t be disappointed.

Edit: One exemption from this is mead; a medieval honey wine, which is indigenous to that region, but again, mead is not what we consider real wine nowadays.

Life / Are there many atheists and agnostics in Poland? [47]

M-G (prefers to choose nothing actually, but would not call himself an atheist)

That would make you an Agnostic, wouldn't it?

Agnosticism (...) depending on the form of agnosticism, inherently unknowable due to the nature of subjective experience perceived by that individual.

History / What Happened in the Danzig Corridor 1939? Poles Slaughtering Germans? [133]

In Germany we call it "Bromberger Blutsonntag" and it happened!

Bromberger Blutsonntag

Here it is in English: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Sunday_%281939%29

It is hard to say how many Germans died exclusively during the Bloody Sunday. German author Peter Aurich gave a number of German civilian deaths in Bydgoszcz as 366 deaths.[8], another German historian, Hugo Rasmus, estimates the number of ethnic German deaths in Bydgoszcz as "at least 415".[1] Two Polish historians - Włodzimierz Jastrzębski and Czesław Madajczyk against the Polish soldiers in the city, estimate ethnic German deaths respectively 103 (Jastrzębski), and about 300 (150 on September 3, the rest in the days after) victims (Madajczyk).[9]

It looks like there was a massacre of the German minority in town of Bydgoszcz two days after the German invasion of Poland.

I've never heard about it, have you?

I have always been confused about the historical reality of what happened in the Danzig corridor in 1939, which many claim was the direct provocation for the German attack on Poland...

The massacre in Bydgoszcz accrued two days AFTER the start of the invasion.

Food / Polish grochówka recipe? [23]

groch = yellow peas, yes.

I thought they use navy beans in polish bean soup. What's yellow peas? Do you mean yellow split peas?
I use navy beans, butter beans, Polish kielbasa and soup starter (salary, onion, carrots).
