Life / My girlfriend wants to go back to Poland as she thinks lifes better there [36]

So generally speaking Poland has a better or atleast the same standard of living as the UK now? obviously up till 2 years ago it didn't.

Let me put it this way: today I've found out that if I had the same job in Poland I have in the US, I would be paid up to $18,000/year. Over here I get $69K for exactly the same career. That have put a halt to any delusion I had of moving to Poland.

Food / Poland's Summertime! Let's BBQ [79]

I know it's not a Polish recipe and it does sound a little bit crazy, but you would be surprised how tasty this is:

Beer Can Chicken

The end result is a bbq chicken that is roasted on the outside and steamed on the inside, so it's the most tender chicken you'll ever have. You can literally cut it with a butter knife. The only drawback is that it gets so tender, it may fall apart before serving. Enjoy.

USA, Canada / Rationing food in some US-based stores [32]

This is the result of the idiotic and irresponsible move towards biofuels.

Nothing to do with biofuels. Notice that US does not produce rice. It has more to do with raising the standard of living in Asia. India and Vietnam decided to halt the export of most of types of rice.

USA, Canada / Rationing food in some US-based stores [32]

No more rice? Bummer, I will have to have a fillet mignon for dinner tonight! LOL

I don't think you guys realize how much cheaper the live in the States is comparing to the cost of living in Europe and the rest of the World. That includes your weekly groceries amongst the rest: the real estate prices, prices for cars, electronics, gas (petrol), etc.

History / Is Poland a Southern or Northern European country? [30]

If you watch from Kremlin every country is west.

If you're in Oodaaq, Greenland everybody else is south from you.
If you're standing in the geographic South Pole in Antarctica no matter if you take a left or a right, go straight ahead or even backwards, you go NORTH.

Food / How to sour/clabber homogenised store-bought milk [17]

You need to boil the milk first; this will take care of the homogenization. But be careful - you want to stir it with a whisk while heating it to avoid boiling over. You could land up with a big mess in your kitchen. Maybe that's why the online recipes call for putting the milk into the oven. Later, you need to add some yogurt or sour cream to start the cultivation of needed enzymes. I made some white farmer's cheese this way once - it was pretty good :)

Food / Polish grochówka recipe? [23]

Oh well, I guess what I was making is not realy Grachowka (oops). Maybe it's Polish bean soup? I use navy, nothern and butter beans, sometimes chick peas, Polish kielbasa or German brats, bacon, beef or chicken broth, veggies: salary, carrot, onion and fresh dill for flavor.

Tomato paste is optional.
And I made one today :)

when i have searched for such recipe it seems that they are all pea soups but i am remembering it as a bean one. is it really a fasolowa instead?

Maybe that's what it is?

News / Why does Poland love the US? [144]

Franek, I don't care if you expect any thanks or not. I thank you regardless. From the buttom of my hart, I thank you and may God Bless You.

***

There is another reason "Why does Poland love the US?” After the crackdown on Solidarity in 1980, there were only 3 countries the Polish political refugees could escape to: USA, Canada and Australia. None of the European countries would accept the Solidarity refugees, mainly because of the fear of the Soviet reprisal and the opposition from their own Communist Parties. This is how I land up in the US.

News / Why does Poland love the US? [144]

when you say "western Europe",please be clear and say France,OK :)

You right, I said "most of the Western Europe" and meant France, Germany, Italy etc. Can anybody remember back in the 80's when the Russkies pulled out their SS-20's and the US rolled out their Scud missiles and the plans for Star Wars? Can anybody remember the commie outrage in those countries, not only they didn’t pay for it, they didn’t want it in their backyard. BTW, the Soviets collapsed soon after; they simply couldn’t keep up with the expense.

News / Why does Poland love the US? [144]

Why does Poland love the US ?

Well, first of all there is 10 million Americans of Polish descent (in a country of 350 mil, that’s about one out of 35). So there are a lot of family ties there. Another thing is how the US was always fighting communism, while most of Western Europe was, to say gently, “commie friendly”.

Food / Polish grochówka recipe? [23]

groch = yellow peas, yes.

I thought they use navy beans in polish bean soup. What's yellow peas? Do you mean yellow split peas?
I use navy beans, butter beans, Polish kielbasa and soup starter (salary, onion, carrots).

UK, Ireland / Free housing for Poles in the UK? [29]

In a few months I'm going to the UK to work as a dog breeder, how may I get free housing ?

Isn't it the same Gregorz who practically declared a war on all Britts and everything British who's now moving to the UK looking for Government subsidized housing? Does anyone else find it a bit ironic besides me? lol

History / What Happened in the Danzig Corridor 1939? Poles Slaughtering Germans? [133]

In Germany we call it "Bromberger Blutsonntag" and it happened!

Bromberger Blutsonntag

Here it is in English: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Sunday_%281939%29

It is hard to say how many Germans died exclusively during the Bloody Sunday. German author Peter Aurich gave a number of German civilian deaths in Bydgoszcz as 366 deaths.[8], another German historian, Hugo Rasmus, estimates the number of ethnic German deaths in Bydgoszcz as "at least 415".[1] Two Polish historians - Włodzimierz Jastrzębski and Czesław Madajczyk against the Polish soldiers in the city, estimate ethnic German deaths respectively 103 (Jastrzębski), and about 300 (150 on September 3, the rest in the days after) victims (Madajczyk).[9]

It looks like there was a massacre of the German minority in town of Bydgoszcz two days after the German invasion of Poland.

I've never heard about it, have you?

I have always been confused about the historical reality of what happened in the Danzig corridor in 1939, which many claim was the direct provocation for the German attack on Poland...

The massacre in Bydgoszcz accrued two days AFTER the start of the invasion.

Life / Are there many atheists and agnostics in Poland? [47]

M-G (prefers to choose nothing actually, but would not call himself an atheist)

That would make you an Agnostic, wouldn't it?

Agnosticism (...) depending on the form of agnosticism, inherently unknowable due to the nature of subjective experience perceived by that individual.

Food / Good Polish Wines [74]

Poland and Polish People have no wine tradition at all.
You could say that Poland has decent Vodka and Beer, but what they sell as “wine” over there in most countrys would not even be considered wine. Often it is simply fermented and sometimes carbonated fruit juice.

Most Poles had never tasted or even heard of every day wines such as Merlot, Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. How would they know what a real wine supposed to taste like?

Try Polish Beer or Vodka instead, you won’t be disappointed.

Edit: One exemption from this is mead; a medieval honey wine, which is indigenous to that region, but again, mead is not what we consider real wine nowadays.

Feedback / Editing topic title by Admins or Moderators [10]

The old title of a thread 'Open letter to the European Comission for embargo for my deportation' was changed to 'Open Letter to Europenian Comission 20/01/2008'. Why?

IMO the old title created by the thread's author gave us a little insite to his way of thinking. And most of all it was funny!

There are plenty of thread titles on PF with grammatical errors and nobody changes them. So why changing this one?

PS. BTW, it's 'European Commission', not 'Europenian Comission' :)

It wasn't changed. It was merged to an already existing topic.

Life / What Do the Poles Think about the Abolition of the Death Penalty? [48]

“An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”, proclaims the proverb and the Poles enthusiastically agree.

Actually, "eye for eye" is not just "a proverb"; it came from the Bible, and that's how it became a building block of the Western Culture:

exodus 21:23-21:2723

If any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

The Bible is full of exerts supporting the capital punishment:
Genesis 9:6:

"Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man." (KJV)

Genesis 4:11-15.

"And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;...a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him."

News / What do Polish friends think of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton? [226]

Janek, you're assuming that it is impossible for Americans to vote in a woman or a Black Man for a president, and IMO you’re simply wrong. You’re trying to apply your way of thinking into an American society and that's probably because you live in a different culture and simply have different life experience then an average American.

I don't see anything wrong with having a woman or a Black Man as a boss at work, a judge in a courtroom or a President of the Country, and I don't know one person who would find it wrong or troublesome.

This election has already proved you wrong, since it is the busiest Democratic primary election in history. So many people want to give their vote either for a woman or a Black Man that the election stations are having a hard time keeping up with the huge amount of citizens wanting to cast their vote.

News / Should Polish citizens living abroad have the right to vote in elections [69]

There is a difference between the migrant workers who are living abroad temporarily and Polish expatriates who have emigrated out of Poland and are living permanently in other countries.

The migrant workers want to vote in Polish elections and they have every right to do it.

Most Polish people living abroad who are not planning on moving back to Poland will not vote in Polish elections because they don't fallow Polish politics and quite frankly they don't care.

USA, Canada / NO VISAS to Canada for Poles in the near future [62]

I just heard on the radio that Polish and the US governments are negotiating this very issue right now in conjunction with the anti-missile shield. The VWP is probably very close now.

I wish we could work freely in Canada, just as we can within most EU.

I wish Poles and all the EU citizens could live and work both in Canada and the US and vice versa. That would bring both continents so much closer. Heck, I'd like to see a deal like that including EU, N. America, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. The whole Developed World should be a free work-n-live zone, if it was up to me.

I have been to Canada 2 in winter and early fall, and I am absolutely in love with this country. I would love to live there, I met wonderful people, and life is so much more peaceful and better than here in the UK.
Anyway back to the visas-now

I think the biggest difference is that there is too many Poles in the EU at the moment (not their fault); therefore you can see some anti-Polish xenophobia (also understandable).
