History / Jewish love towards Poles [389]

That's something that's interesting to me. I'd like to know more about customs and traditions that Poles and Jews have in common. I know we both drink Borscht but we spell it differently. We also eat potato pirogen. How about gefilte fish - carp stuffed with chopped fish - Do Poles eat that too? Stuffed cabbage (with chopped meat and rice)? Braided bread (called challah in hebrew-yiddish)?

Well there's much more in common that you may suspect :)
I wouldnt say gefilte fish is something very popular back in Poland but as far as i know: stuffed cabbage-golabki, sweet challah-chalka, chopped leaver, salted herring, bajgle-obwazanki (?),sufganiyot-paczki,struddle-strudel,czulent-ciulim (polish ciulim contains pork)and many more, indeed.

Btw I miss all that gorgeous home made stuff...

History / Jewish love towards Poles [389]

yiddish you meant...
Yiddish is one of the many jewish languages used among Polish Jews (or Ashkhenazi Jews-the term that gives us wider specification of this group).
Regarding the newest research it is said that Jews had come to the Slavic territory about two centuries before year 1098...

Food / Can't remember the name of the Poland-style soup? [21]

May be Zalewajka (pronounce salevayka) as well which is kind of barszcz biały but with potatoes halfs or quarters) in served locally (Silesia). Good stuff especially with freshly baked and crunchy bread.

Life / I AM BLACK. SHOULD I MOVE TO POLAND? [107]

Hi,
I assume that Wroclaw is not bad place to live in.
Comparing to other places in Poland I would call it cosmopolitan one due to its past and historical heritage. It used to be inhabited by Germans, Jews and Poles and other minorities.

In couple past years it became kind of polish axis mundi for the investments and new businesses. Lots of students as well so hopefully all of these factors let people to stay open-minded.

Good luck

History / Polish Jews - they changed their Jewish surnames to Polish [532]

Well, at the margins of this topic just to mention I’m looking for someone with Jewish Yiddish origins born or being relative of someone born back in former Poland (Poland itself, White Russia, Ukraine etc).

I’m doing PhD related to the problem of contemporary Jewish identity so some testimonials would be very helpful..

Cheers
