UK, Ireland / Polish community in Leeds? [25]

at Leeds university 2/14/70

to be more precise it was at the leeds metropolitan university.
the venue still today hosts many great gigs (although not as good as the who one, which was voted best live-album ever by critics on several occasions), but many of the local bands have their first big gigs here...

and yes. the who still are great...

HOWEVER...
can we please stop posting off-topic and come back to the original topic?

thanks... ;)

UK, Ireland / british exodus [4]

UK statistics leave a lot to be desired in what they don't tell....

every statistic can be bent and interpreted to exactly tell what one wants it to tell...

the figures above during which time span are they taken? 1week, 1month, 1year?

quite impressive figures but i believe in Leeds are even more poles than the quoted 4000.
an interesting phenomenom though is that poles usually try to stay with themselves and not to mix with the natives.
why is that? i remember when i came to england i avoided meeting germans (i am german by the way) to get into the whole english thing as quickly as possible. today i consider it being my home and my friends and colleagues accept me completely even if i sometimes start being very german about things... :D

however...
what is it that makes those polish people that decide to come to leeds that makes this place attractive? is it only that you know already someone here before you decide to go to england? or is there a particular work around leeds that attracts polish workers?

many questions... ;)

UK, Ireland / Polish and Foreign Drivers in the UK [28]

lots of nonsense said in here...

when i came to england adapting to driving on the other side of the road took me exactly... 2 hours. that is what it took me from the ferry to birmingham...

europeans (those from the continent) do not drive better or worse than english ones... whereas on our 2005 mini run to barcelona we had two english guys entering roundabouts the wrong way...

our trip to the nuerburgring in the following year did cost two english people their minis...

well... judge for yourselves... ;)

i can't understand why i have to pay more for my insurance only because i have a german driving licence...

no matter if left or right side of the road... the person behind the wheel makes the difference...
