News / to buy or not to buy a polish keyboard ? [11]
Thanks a lot folks. Just got back from Poland and as said you can get Polish layout keyboards but they are as rare as rocking horse muck nobody has or want's them, but can be got to order.
So I'll just have to go with the majority and frustrate myself with the softwear. Aaaargh :0)

O.K. you computer buffs out there....I'm going to Poland again Wednesday this week, and the thought of buying a keyboard with a polish layout occcured.
What do you think practical idea or not?
If its feasable what would I expect to pay for a standard keyboard in Poland?

NIP practitioners seem to be 50-60 overwieght with saggy flesh and generaly scarey to see.. :o)

Life / Why do poles drink & drive? [82]
Drove from Krakow to the southeast region and around about last yearand didn't feel nervey at all. I found the driving in general pretty good, the hardest parts being to try and get into the cities and getting out again. Pretty much the same as any English city, it seems worse when you'r strange to the area.
Doing it again end of the month, got a hire car for two week doing west to east and back again. Got my St. Christopher to dangle off the mirror. :o)

Take no notice of some of the negative posts above, they're just as jealouse of you as the polish robbers...You had the Ballsto follow a dream and it's gone a little pear shaped and don't some just love to stick the boot in when you're down...Rant over.
Right on... people like to help those who are triying to help themselves, it's in thiere nature.
Right again..Kiss your stuff goodbye and get on with it!!!...I've been the target of robberies at my place of work several times and it's soul-destroying.
Find ways to protect what you have left, but don't get paranoid.
It seems to me that finance is the root or your dispare, and are relying on the sale of the your house. In the mean time see if you can arrange a bank loan to tide things over,.That's what assets are for.
You have a good idea in the farm convertion, I like to stay in those type of places when i'm traveling in Poland....Good luck and don't let the @astards grind you down..

I have an idea - why don't you start growing food for yourself? If you thinking
of running bed and breakfast then you should have your own chickens , eggs and
bacon. Grow your own potatos , they keep well for winter.
in one word be a self sufficient farmer !
Try to make friends and learn from the locals how they run a farm .

Love / Dating age difference - my 16 yo is dating a 26 yo Polish guy [102]
I wouldn't allow it to happen.
At sixteen ten year age difference is too mutch.....but....
I'ts a difficult situation to be in. If it was to be forbiden they could ruin family life.
If condoned without control of some degree could have drastic consequenses.
I think you have to follow gut instincts, and try not to over react.
Does anybody know if this age difference is a cultural thing? Is this kind of thing acceptable in areas outside of the US?

Genealogy / how many know their own family histories? [139]
I'm begining to know more of my Polish roots, my youngest son got the ball rolling by asking Grandma some questions, (they are stubbourn at times, arn't they). I always thought it was just them but even on my visit to close relatives in the "stary kraj" I found they do not talk easily about the past.
I'll be going back again in October and visit the Zelem family in "Zielona Gora" and see if I can pick up a thread on my fathers side the Wozniak family in "katy Wroclawskie."
I realy do not know how far back to go, Polish people do not seem to have embraced the geneology thing and I've found lots of official records are difficult if not inpossible to access, especialy those relating to the years between and during the two world wars.

I should book it as soon as you can, its a very popular shuttle.
Very reliable too. Drop off is at the bus station in Kralow, from there you can get a taxi at a reasonable rate to wherever you are staying.
Have a good trip.............

non smoking bars and other public places are a blessing
I can wear my shirt more than once.
I don't have to hang my jacket in the trees to freshen it up.
My eyes don't water after the first hour.
I don't feel like my nose belongs to someone else in the morning.
Yes.
And I've been given the choice to breath fresh air again.
As Sapphire and Wroclaw have said, whole new communities have sprung up in public places where people smoke and chat so everybody is better off....
Just one more thought .......I propose they should designate a special area where uncontrolable farters could sit, fart and flirt :o)

Wizz Air ..........no problems at all. travelled Liverpool to katowice last year paid just taxes. I also thought there would be big problems but everything was just fine, a little like a bus that runs on time. Booked the transfer to Krakow through them also nice and easy all the way.
Flying with them again this year same as " taxes only " this time having a hire car through them also.
Go or it Chicago Tom it will be O.K...........Peanuts are good too.

You were correct it was mobile to mobile in Poland.........
Just in some contries when dialing mobile to mobile you may have to add other digits before the no..................

I have a cousin who lives in Zielony Gory, and she is haveing touble dialing out to the UK.
The question is, what are the codes used to make international call to the UK from Poland? that is from a land line.
Next, when I go to Poland later this year, do I need to use any prefixes before the number to call mobile to mobile ?

Real Estate / Advice about Lubuskie region? [12]
Househunt take a look at Wysowa in the Beskid Niski region, just 2 hours by car from Krakow. Visited there last year just for a day, it's a nice spa town close to the slovak border. attracts many tourists and the house prices haven't spirald out of control yet.Your budget will still go a long way there.

I would also like to use the property for a health retreat as an extension of our UK business, so would like somewhere peaceful, in a country setting ideally.

Its a very credible explination but not the same as I heard and partly understood. That was a tale of saints and holy battles with cirtain victors nailing the extra bars onto the original cross. But as you say I can always ask on my next visit to Poland in October.

You're probably right, I'd seen the cross in the southeast and also on the pictures of grave stones of departed relatives in Wroclaw and Zelone Gore. So i assumed it was common in the whole of Poland.
I'd googled Polish triple cross/Polish cross before and come up with nothing but film reviews. Thanks I'll try lemko cross this time...
Did that couldn't find anything other than Lemko history and a ref to a lemko cross.
there is a definite story of how the cross with the three bars came to be, someone once tried to explain it to me but the bulk of it was lost due to my poor polish.
