Language / Not sure if I will be able to speak Polish [53]

Hi

i have been learning polish for 3 years.

and i still forget about the basic grammar.

But there is one thing about polish that probably you dont understand.

It is the one of the most gobbledegook and complicated languages ever. :))

The longer you study it the more complex it becomes, because obviously you are slowly but surely progressing.

But you will always improve.

Repetition is the master.

Here is a wonderful, free website for you> livemocha.com

Not only that, but sometimes the platform is changed at the last minute without being changed on the departureboard. And if it's a domestic train, then the announcement will only be in Polish.

hmmmmm i think im terrified now

ale jaja!!!!!!!!!!!!

Language / Polish masuline singular/plural inanimate nouns and case [9]

do these all follow the same rule? im beginning to learn this about polish.
possibly there are a few exceptions

ok here are my examples :

jeden kwiat
dwa kwiaty
trzy kwiaty
cztery kwiaty
pięc kwiatów.........there should not be any other way of spelling flower?

jeden nos
dwa nosy
trzy nosy
cztery nosy
pięc nosów.......not sure if that is correct.........im just trying to see if polish follows a gramatical pattern. I know it does ( but with a few exceptions i guess) maybe not in this example

cheers :))

czy to jest poprawnie?

Life / Birthdays/Namedays In Poland? Which do Poles celebrate? [22]

Thread attached on merging:
Polish birthdays and namedays

I think Polish people celebrate their nameday more than their birthday..........

But my question is.............................................

If your birthday is the 17th of August and your name is Małgorzata.....................

How do you work out when your nameday is? Is it specific?

So therefore can someone tell me when this person's nameday is as i don't want to ask them and then spoil the surprise of me sending them/giving them somthing.

And is it common to give BIRTHDAY cards on this day? Or do yous have nameday cards too?

And is it common to give presents on namedays?

cheers big ears :))

Language / Share Perfective and Imperfective Polish verbs [105]

Merged: Imperfective & perfective

Translate please>

Ja mówię= I speak/talk
Ja mówiłem=I spoke/talked
Ja powiedziałem=

Ja rozumiem=I understand
Ja rozumiałem=I understood
Ja zrozumiałem=

As you see i have answered the first two myself........because after that i get confused...........................

Am i correct in thinking that POWIEDZIALEM & ZROZUMIALEM are PAST PARTICPLES?

as talk/speak are present tense &
talked/spoke are both past tense

so would the missing answers be> talked/spoken and understood?

Language / Do Polish Movies Help learn the language? [60]

One quick example (paraphrased except for the relevant part):
"Like my nana used to say "you need to get laid"."
"You're nana used to say that?"

translated:
"As my nanny used to say "you need sex"."
"Your nanny used to say that?"

WHATS WRONG WITH THAT?

thats the beauty of it, you have to THINK!!!!!!!!!!! :))

Language / Do Polish Movies Help learn the language? [60]

I think it is, but.................................

I have been to the cinema in Poland a few times and of course the films are in English with Polish subtitles.

So, for me it is brilliant watching and listening to the films whilst also reading the subtitles.

I liked and found it beneficially.

I'm sure you are meaning films that are being spoken in Polish.

Perhaps this would be ok if you have a few years of learning behind you.

You can buy the latest dvd's in the uk which have Polish subtitles for example

The fim '21' about the poker is one.

So you dont have to go to the cinema

Na razie

Life / Which area of Poland speaks the least English? [12]

Edited by: Bartolome Today, 11:01 Report #5

Go to Lower Silesia, any village around Opole. You'll learn Polish, Silesian dialect and German as well.

What is this Silesian dialect?

It is not Polish?

[quote=ArcticPaul]
In Krakow every time I asked a question in Polish I got an answer in English!

YES ARTICPAUL i had the same problem in krakow but if your polish is good enough tell them to speak in polish
One girl at a restaurant asked me in polish if i wanted an English menu or polish menu.
