Love / Do Polish guys have a different approach to dating than others guys? [50]

He neutered himself without telling me.

I was mistreated. By an American guy.

I am really very sorry Krysia about the way your ex-husband treated you. He sounds like he was a real s***head! And to do what he did.......unexcusable. I'd kick his a** right now because he makes other guys look bad. I have a similar story, I am also divorced, and my wife did some truly horrible things to me, and I too have met a wonderful woman now who happens to be Polish.

But this doesn't mean that I couldn't have met a wonderful American woman. This doesn't mean that all American women are bad. I understand you are still very hurt over what he did to you, and that is ok, and it is also ok for you to have a personal opinion that you don't want to try a relationship with another American man, but you shouldn't go around saying to everyone that all American men are bad because they simply aren't. I for one, would never do anything like I can only imagine what your bast*** of an ex did to you. And to make a statement like that only serves to generate anger and hate between people, in this instance it could serve to generate anger in this forum between American men and Polish women and something like that serves no useful purpose and is not good.

I'm sorry I went on a soapbox there for a bit, and I do really feel for you. I can't imagine someone who would go and get a vasectomy behind his wife's back. I assure you though that most men that get this done are for the reasons that Shelley stated above, they don't want anymore children and don't want the hassle of birth control products. And any man that would do this in secret to cheat on their spouse................well at least they won't be infecting this world with anymore of their kind.

Life / Postal Customs in Poland [17]

Thanks for the information Northwood. She went back to the post office and they gave her a number to call. She contacted them and basically all she has to do is send in a letter to them stating the value of the items, and then they will send it to her.

Life / Try it - move to Poland! [33]

Better to try, love and lose than regret it for ever in my opinion ;-)

I agree Steve, which is why I'll be trying my luck at living there next year. Do you know any American's that have had luck moving there? Seems to me that it's easier for the British than for someone like me. I'm currently learning Polish very fervently and hopefully should have a good base by next year. Just have to worry about a job, and a residency visa.

Genealogy / how many know their own family histories? [139]

Ok on my mother's side (Grimm) we can be traced back most notably to the famous Brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm but I am sure the family goes back way before them.

As for my father's side, my aunt did a lot of research over a long period of time and apparently traced our name a really long way back. I'm not sure of the year, but from what I know, she traced it back to a man that was an orphan and had been taken in. When he was grown, a group of raiders I believe to be Cossacks destroyed the village and he was among the few survivors. The name of the village had been Ransleben and he took it for his surname since he never knew his parents and in honor of the memory of the village and it's inhabitants.

I still have family that lives in Germany on both sides, my mom's side they are all spread out and I have never had any contact with them, my dad's side mostly lives near Bremen and I have met them and talked to them on the phone.

Work / is Polish language necessary in all work fields [13]

What is your native language?

English is my native language, and I've thought a lot about teaching English, but I'm afraid I would have to be more proficient in Polish for that as well. I am also aware about needing a work visa, I am actually more interested in a temporary residency permit as that allows for work and is longer, I think for 2 years. I am sure I will one day marry my girlfriend and that will make things easier for me as well to live and work in Poland. I am a computer networking technician by trade, and I have lots of cooking experience too but really I would be willing to do just about anything starting out, my biggest goal is just to be able to live there.

Work / is Polish language necessary in all work fields [13]

I would love to find a job in Poland, especially in Wrocław, but I'm afraid I need to know Polish before I can find one. I'm studying very hard and I have a year before I'm out of the military and could look for a job there. I hope it's enough time to get ready.

Life / Postal Customs in Poland [17]

Well today she got a letter telling her about the problem. She said the letter is kind of confusing so tomorrow she's going to the post office to find out what we need to do.

Life / Postal Customs in Poland [17]

No and that is probably why there is a problem. I sent it from a U.S. postal office. The last time I sent her a package I sent it from the Deutsch Post and there was no problem. It could also be though because I'm sending her an electronic device (cd player). The last time I sent a package it was just chocolates and a teddy bear. She said something about them wanting to know how much it cost. I guess if it's over a certain amount she might have to pay a tax on it or something?

Life / Postal Customs in Poland [17]

Well she got a letter at the post office and she says there is a problem with my box but she doesn't know how to explain it to me in English. She asked if there was someone I can talk to or something. I'm thinking it's an issue with customs, is the word I'm looking for cło or odprowa?

Does anyone know what you would call customs in Polish? I sent my girlfriend a cd player in the mail and I think there is a problem with customs.

Love / I'm missing my Polish baby (long-term relationship).... [27]

Your ISP could've easily just upgraded their equipment and could be having issues with it or it could be a degradation in the fiber in the ground. Sorry that's my tech geekiness coming out, comes along with the job I guess. I know what you mean though, my internet back in Germany is great, I have a 6 mb connection but here in Bahrain I'm sharing a dsl connection with other renters in my apartment building and it's so slow and I don't always get good reception on my phone. And if I am talking to my girlfriend on her cell phone in a bus or a tram, it just gets worse.

Love / I'm missing my Polish baby (long-term relationship).... [27]

was just talking to BW today and realized it cost me 24 cents per minute to call his cell in Poland, but only 2 cents per minute to call a land line....

For me to call Anna at home it's 1 cent a minute but to call her cell phone it's like 31 cents a minute so yeah it depends on the type of phone you are calling to.

News / How Poles truly feel about their situation in Poland and being in EU? [76]

You know I think it's kind of sad, because this thread really has the potential for some very stimulating conversation and getting to see things from different perspectives and gain some insight, and instead people start being abusive and start arguing. I hope this thread and ones like in the future can stay on topic better and not get off track by people's hate and narrow minded views.

Love / I'm missing my Polish baby (long-term relationship).... [27]

Haha, love is such a good thing isn't it? I haven't seen my baby since the 20th of May and I am supposed to get back to Germany around the 26th of September. Then I have some stupid appointments I have to take care of and then I'm off to Wrocław for three weeks!!! :-) I am also going to load a lot of hugs and kisses upon her. My flight gets there early morning and I already told her that first day I'm back we're not leaving the bedroom. ;-)

History / Memories of the Polish communist era [115]

I know this is not really on the mark of what you were looking for but there is a pub/dance club in Wrocław that is kind of a tribute to communism (Actually I'm not sure if it is memorializing it or mocking it) . It is called PRL and it has all kinds of old poster and pictures on the walls including portraits of all the worlds famous communitst leaders. They also sometimes have old communist television shows playing on various t.v.'s throughout the pub. Anyhow it is my girlfriend's favorite pub and I kind of like it too.

Work / How hard is it for an American in Poland? I'm computer networking IT / salary [12]

Yes but you would be surprised Ranj. I don't know about the German Polish border because I've never driven across it, but for example you can drive from Germany into Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, and Austria, as easy as if you are driving between two states in America, there is a sign on the highway that is about it. No stop, no check, you just drive right on through.

USA, Canada / The things Polish people do in the US [46]

I'm not Polish, and I open boxes to see what I'm buying, but only the kind that can be closed again like Polska mentioned, and yes I inspect my eggs too. I also open shampoo or soap bottles and squeeze it slightly to push the air out and get a whiff of what it smells like. One time though I did squeeze it a little too hard and ended up with shampoo on my nose. ;-)

News / How Poles truly feel about their situation in Poland and being in EU? [76]

im just gonna miss the zloty when its exchanged for euros

Is anyone worried about going to the euro? I know when Germany went to the euro, for instance, something that cost 5 marks in the super market now cost 5 euro, yet if your salary was say a 1000 marks a month it became 500 euro a month. Is anybody worried about everything getting a lot more expensive than it is now?

Work / How hard is it for an American in Poland? I'm computer networking IT / salary [12]

I hadn't even thought about the shipping of things to be honest. Are there a lot of rules? I am willing to part with a lot of what I have when I make the move, and I am only going to be moving "up the road" as I am living in Germany at the moment. Thanks for the head's up and the info. So where in Poland are you moving to? I want to move to Wrocław.

Work / How hard is it for an American in Poland? I'm computer networking IT / salary [12]

I was just wondering if anyone can give me some success stories of an American who isn't of Polish descent moving to Poland. I really want to move to Poland next year to be with my girlfriend but I'm afraid of not being able to get a residency permit and/or not being able to find a job. I am and have been for the last 4 years, a computer networking technician in the Air Force. I also have lots of experience working in restaurants and working as a chef. I tell my girlfriend, who is afraid for our future, that I am never going to give up and that I will make it work, but sometimes it can be scary to think about.
