Food / Menu suggestions for a Polish/Scottish night. [89]

The date is set for March 27th.

Due to unforeseen circumstances I was unable to attend this night. This also meant there were no haggis, neeps and tatties and they were missed I am told.

I was waiting to post until I had received the pictures of the food that were taken but so far I haven't received them so I decided to post anyway. From all accounts it was a good night that even involved karaoke...(not sure I'm sorry to have missed that part ;) and my friend and I have even planned to have another in May but no set date as yet.

Thanks again to all who offered suggestions, I'll certainly be using them again for May.

:)

Love / Need help in relationship with a Polish man [33]

I guess I have to see it from his side as well.

Yes, it's true. He should also do the same for you to though.

Polska doll thank you so much for your sensible advise I don't regret coming here after all.

Well, although I wasn't the only one, you're most welcome. Good luck to you both for your future. :)

Love / Need help in relationship with a Polish man [33]

I do encourage him and he i okay when we are alone but when he has to speak to someone else he shys AWAY.

That's good. His confidence when speaking English with you will be higher then strangers because he knows you well and you know he is trying. When he's calling some stranger, at a bank for example, it's a whole different thing. Think of whenever you've had to phone a call centre. They tend to mumble down the phone or speak at a hundred miles an hour, it's off putting, even for a person fluent in English.

He works in an environment where he has to speak in english and he can communicate

Again, that could be down to his confidence with the people he is speaking to.

Its just that when his friends call he has the energy to go out. Mind you this is on his days off

Aha! Get in there first then. :) Make plans with him to do something on his days off.

Dee1603, your employment position aside Wroclaw has hit the nail on the head with this :

he needs to speak to people in small amounts... to build up his confidence... then he may want to learn more... which will make it easier for you.
with letters/text... have him try to translate it first... then offer to help him out... praise the good... don't mention the bad.

If your boyfriend is only teaching himself English with you as his sounding board then he isn't getting the chance to build up his confidence by speaking with others which means he's relying on you and you're getting exasperated with him - and you're showing it. Help him build up his confidence.

If he is working a lot of hours in order to support both of you then you can't complain that he's tired and may not want to go out late socially so why not organise something nice in the house, it's cheaper and it's more exclusive because it's just you and him.

UK, Ireland / (NO RASISM OR STEREOTYPING BTW) WHO IS POLISH IN THE UK AND ON BENEFITS? [46]

my friend and her husband claim benefits on their kids but they both work full time so i don't see why they shouldn't.

If you mean child benefit then I don't see why they shouldn't either. They work and pay taxes here so yes they should get child benefit. My Polish friend and her boyfriend certainly claim for their daughter and right they should. They both work too.

I have no problem with anyone receiving benefits if there is a legitimate reason for them doing so. For example: If someone, especially during the credit crunch, finds themselves unemployed then why shouldn't they get a little bit of financial help to see them through?

I'm pissed off supporting layabouts to be honest, irrespective of what country they come from.

I think that says it all really. I agree with szarlotka in this quote. I don't knock my pan in for fifty-odd hours a week to pay for some lazy sod who just can't be bothered getting out of bed in the morning.

UK, Ireland / Negative attitude towards Polish immigration in UK becoming stronger [90]

''romaniannnnnnn nooooooo u need a proof of address''.i asked why.i got this answer i have never got in the six years i lived in london: ''u ask me why?'' having this wondered face and smiling at me.like u know''u dirty romanians can't open an account without a proof of address cos u r romanians'' or '' u dirty pieces of shit , useless second class citizens r not worthy opening an account with us''

You see, the thing is, you have just ASSUMED most of all of that. Believe it or not, the UK is tightening up on immigration. What's the problem with the proof of address? If your brother-in-law has a landlord they'll provide proof. Yes with Lloyds TSB you can introduce someone but you still need all the relevant proof. Just so you don't feel so victimised, I am a British citizen and I require to have proof of address. Last year I took out a new contract with a company and it took me 3 hours in an office to prove myself.

Don't bother trying to palm off stict proof policies as "being against Romanians".

british ppl make me sick.

Some of them make me sick too. What makes me more sick is one individual deciding a whole nation has the same mindset. Actually, more than making me sick, it makes me worried. It means you can't define between individuals.

Love / What is the best car to impress a Polish girl? [60]

Basically any Audi apart from that one. ;)

I think that Fiat 126p cabrio is the best possible option to impress any girl

I thought it was a Lego car when I first looked at it...

Food / How to Cook and Eat an Artichoke? [32]

here's no mention of heart shape in recipe, unless you meant the artichokes'heart.

Yes, it says "Draw a large curve to make a heard shape when unfolded" so I assumed "heard" was a typo for "heart". I feel it's better, if using pastry, to make a square.

I might try it myself. I found that recipe when looking up info on slow cookers. Needs to buy a new one... :)

You can partially use this recipe but substitute asparagus for artichoke leaves and the greaseproof papers for puff pastry.
lowfatveggiefood.co.uk/courgetteasparagus.htm

Don't make heart shapes in the pastry make squares and monitor in the oven. I made something similar before (using asparagus though) and it was tasty. :)

Food / How to Cook and Eat an Artichoke? [32]

I think boiling it and using it with dip is the worst way of using it. I think that these:

you can cook the heart (after removing the leaves&the hairy stuff) in a stew dish with green peas and lamb and rice,iy taste nice.

or grill it and have as a salad with other bits.

use it as topping for pizza MMmmmmm

are good suggestions. If you're going to do something with it, do something different. ;) Pizza topping is good. :)

Food / Menu suggestions for a Polish/Scottish night. [89]

Sounds like fun though:).

I hope so. :) I'm hoping there will be time to take pictures to post on PF. The date is set for March 27th.

Coat taken? What, like Clouseau? He enters the hotel and the man asks for his hat, his coat and his gloves. He takes them, thanks him and walks off, LOL

Hopefully it won't be as complicated as that Seanus. ;) It's just a cloak room...

Wee sausage rolls would go down well, PD. Pastry is appreciated here.

We're going to use them as part of the "welcome" buffet. You know, when you come in the door and have your coat taken. ;)

PD, did you think about making krokiety with barszcz czerwony

I didn't but my co-cook did (we are back to only two of us) so if she can prepare it, we'll have it. We're taking "donations" from guests too so that might appear with that too...

This sounds heavy duty preparation to me. LOL

It's a heavy duty night. If it's going to be done, it's to be done right. The guests won't appreciate a half thought about menu on the night..

How about some Fisherman's Pie or Admiral's Pie, PD? I dunno how that would be received amongst Poles.

It's a lot of fish and that's something I am not keen on personally. I don't know many Poles who eat a great deal of fish either. Who knows?

different names because of different meet?

Yes. Steak pie - chunks of beef in a rich gravy (use ale as well) with a pastry top.

Shepherds pie - traditionally minced lamb with veg and topped in mashed potato.

Seanus can describe the fish pies clearer, they are just not for me.

History / Taras Bulba - the movie [115]

Let's hope it's a good movie and not like the one staring Tony Kurtis and Yul Brynner.

That's what I was thinking too...seems like they tried to make it too "hollywood" then. We'll see what this version brings...

there is one British restaurant (it's called British something) where i want to go for dinner.... what would you recommend me to eat?
i'm sure they have all of your British goodies...

Oh, find out the name of it, they might have an online menu. :)

Try things like steak pie, shepherds pie, toad in the hole. If they have such things. Maybe that needs to be another thread... ;)

What a cracking idea, PD. I can imagine Scots liking Hunters's Stew (aka bigos).

Thanks Seanus. :) I think there is something similar in older Scottish cuisine. Maybe need to look at the Highlanders for some advice on that. Might be called Hunter's Pie...maybe, can't be sure.

( Hmmm, wonder what the kitchen smells of.........a mix of cabbage and haggis ! )

Actually yes. ;) But also of the garlic and herb potatoes I was cooking at the same time. :)

That made me :)

They look great coming out of the oven.

Thanks, they smelled pretty good too.

"Fresh" stuff better x 10.

Yes I know, I am suitably admonished. ;) Fresh stuff is spicier too I think.

Great result tho ;-)

Thanks. :)

now, i'm really hungry...

Get down to your local Scots store then, grab a haggis and a cabbage... ;)

i thought that 'haggis' is a brand of diapers...

You might still think that after viewing these pictures. ;)

I used tinned haggis. Moistened it with water, not whisky. I also thought of making a whisky sauce to go with these but didn't have time tonight. Maybe another night...

They tasted good despite the fact that they don't look that great. ;)

  • Haggis heating up.

  • 6 Haggis 'n' Cabbage

  • The innards...

Love / What do you think....is he serious? [37]

He says " why you want me, I dont have lots of money, I work in dirt, I am nothing"

I think that's the key with this. He needs reassurance about that and probably a lot and I am sure you are giving him that and can continue to do so. Has he ever said to you he is worried you'll go away with someone else? I think his asking you to move some of your bits and pieces into his flat is his way at looking for some sort of commitment from you but at the same his "I guess" comment when you asked if you were official was his way at not committing too much in case you don't want the same thing.

Why not try to get away for the weekend or something and make it just time for you both, no jobs, no other friends/family around? Do a bit of talking, some "discovering". ;)

Good luck. :)

little bit of sauce

Whisky sauce! :)

I've never had haggis :)

Golombki filled with Haggis.

The test run is in the oven... (6 small ones. ;)

Are you making the filling for the golabki with haggis ?

Yep. It's for the Scottish/Polish night my friend and I are having at the end of the month. szkotja2007 suggested haggis as a filling on the previous page so we thought we might as well try it. :) We know it's not really golabki but there will be the real stuff too. ;)

then it should be parboiled I would think

That's what I was thinking...it might be really dry otherwise.

OK, I have a tiny problem. I wonder if anyone knows the answer to this.

Tomorrow I am going to try the golabki with haggis, but should I par-cook the haggis before hand or not? What do you think? I'm thinking I should but interested to see what others think.

Travel / Anyone flew with Ryanair from Gdansk Yet? [8]

I hear they are bad for canceling flights at the last minute

It seems so, and without providing much help for the stranded passengers...

The source is the Daily Record. It's only appeared there and in the 9 am briefing at my paper.
