UK, Ireland / Where, in the UK, is the most Polish? [18]

But they do integrate rather than forming communities - you'll find Poles all over the place, as opposed to certain areas being 'Polish'.

There's a bit of both going on really. In Edinburgh there are areas which are predominately Polish but the people who live there work outside the Polish community most of the time.

UK, Ireland / Where, in the UK, is the most Polish? [18]

Can anyone name some such towns?

Not off the top of my head but if you want to return to a city you'll find that most big cities have areas that are mostly Polish like in my city.

If I were you I'd decide on which part of the UK you want to return to and then research further from there. :)

I guess if I went to BNP forums I might get more info ;)

Yes, exaggerated info. ;)

UK, Ireland / I'm turning nationalistic. Want to change my views. [14]

It always raises suspicion when somebodies first post is to express a strong opinion which may cause offence.

Yep. It could be that he has a valid point to bring up which could have been discussed but the timing of his post and wording suggests he's sounding off...we'll see, he may return and we can find out a bit more.

He claims he is from Scotland and his interests are "Flood"?

:) Yes I wondered about that too. I'm assuming it's a "flood" of Poles he's talking about and not the high river levels...who knows?

James, something tells me you'll not be back to see the replies on this thread...

but if you are...

Tracksuit wearing, BMW driving, unfaithful, untrustworthy, two faced, teasing, big headed, money loving, materialistic, ignorant, bad character judging, secret prioratising, gossiping, self loving pricks.

Use of the word teasing, does that mean you were seeing a Polish girl and she's dumped you/not interested any more?

That description above might describe some Poles but it sure describes a ton of neds too.

most of poles working abroad have one common goal. making money.

This is the goal of most people working these days, to make money. Nothing wrong with making money.

UK, Ireland / English tossers give Brits a bad name in Poland [139]

I don't doubt there are Scotland fans who cause some bother on away trips but Cardno is right, if there are Old Firm "fans" causing trouble anywhere while following those teams then it's likely they aren't even Scotland supporters. The majority of the Old Firm fans support England or Ireland.

Most fans of other teams are waiting for the Old Firm to be accepted into any league outside Scotland.

There are Old Firm fans who don't cause an ounce of bother though and are just as sickened by the disgusting behaviour of the others who allege to support their team.

To me, English louts are the same as Scottish, Welsh, Irish or any other Country abroad louts.

I'll go with that, a lout is a lout regardless of nationality.

Love / My Polish girlfriend checks my mobile phone all the time [70]

my polish girlfriend checks my mobile phone all the time

Tell her not to. It's your phone therefore it's private and the messages on it are personal.

Start asking to see her phone every five minutes and see what the outcome of that is.

Language / A word about a dialect. [20]

Interesting post JB.

I have been told that even when you learn Polish and speak it very well it is still very difficult to understand a lot of rural dialects in Poland.

I have a friend from outside Katowice, somewhere rural outside of there and I know that I have a friend from Warsaw who doesn't understand everything she says.

How difficult is it for native Polish speakers to understand each others dialects?

Food / How often do you have Polish Food? [49]

Ask PD, Scots eat ravioli from tins (Heinz?).

Heinz do ravioli in tins for sure but not just Scots that eat it. Personally I haven't eaten it from a tin in a long, long time. I guess it's useful for quick lunches etc.

It must be laden in salt?

That's a problem. But now they're saying that brand name breads are full of salt. What is safe to eat nowadays?

Food / How often do you have Polish Food? [49]

Sausages...eggs...you do keep an eye on your shape, now, do you, PD? :)))

Absolutely. ;) You can eat anything you want as long as it's in moderation you know. :)

flaki

tripe

This will NEVER pass my lips again no matter what country it's from or what name you give it!

Look at Chinese dim-sum, very similar to pierogi. Lithuania also have sth like it.

Yep. Many countries have similar dishes but there's usually some difference in how it's prepared or the ingredients or how it's served. It's all good. :)

Food / How often do you have Polish Food? [49]

but I need a whole day to cook Polish stuffed cabbage.

It does take a while. When my Polish friends cook for parties they spend a phenomenal length of time cooking for it. I do the Scottish food and that only takes a couple of hours. ;)

At the moment I'm eating Polish food a few times a month. I had Polish sausages for breakfast last week...yum :)

In fact I ate some eggs earlier with some Polish bread.

I'm looking forward to my friends boyfriend returning from Poland because he keeps us well stocked in Polish food. :D

Life / What are people in Poland REALLY saying about 'swine flu'? [41]

Ah, to be honest I do not pay attention to it or at least I try not to.

That's my thought. I don't think many are paying attention to it but if you look at the media Poland is in a state of alarm.

There are no masks in the aptekas (pharmacies) here in Poland, is the last I couldn't help hearing.

Would you wear them if there were? I'd be surprised if pharmacies began stocking them suddenly. Why not stock them during normal flu season if that was the case?

Is that a nice way of saying they are hypochondriacs? :)

Haha :) No. I just feel that they will deal with an ache or a pain or something that isn't right rather than just assuming it will go away. Better to know that it's nothing than just assume it.

Why is it Swine Flu and not Piggy Cold?

I've heard it called Piggy Flu and seen it on tabloids in their headlines referred to as that. Couldn't be called 'cold' though as it is a flu virus.

I refer to it as oinky oinky flu. It doesn't sound as ugly, although the flu can be deadly.

:) That makes it cuter. ;) You have hit the nail on the head though. Flu can be deadly, so why the media hype about a different strain of it?

Life / What are people in Poland REALLY saying about 'swine flu'? [41]

Thank Arien. :)

I suspect that no-one is saying much of anything about it and, as I said before, it's all media hype.

A lot of the Polish people I know are thorough about their health and really look after themselves so I wondered how this "threat" of swine flu was going down in PL.

Travel / Driving to Poland with new baby?? [6]

but is this impossible??

Not impossible but you might need a bigger car. ;) Driving would give you the chance to stop here and there if the baby is unsettled but, of course, flying would be quicker.

Talk to your health visitor about it.

Yep. Before you decide on either option definitely take as much advice on board as possible.

Enjoy your holiday and congratulations on the baby news. :)

Life / What are people in Poland REALLY saying about 'swine flu'? [41]

that government stays silent about it

It's things like that which cause more panic about things. The government should be open and say they have little but are sourcing more, if that is indeed what they are doing.

It seems like if there will be panic in Poland it'll be caused by media and the government.

Sounds girly.

Behave. ;)

Life / What are people in Poland REALLY saying about 'swine flu'? [41]

Thanks for the chuckle TM :-)

Well, your friend is right.

I'm not surprised because this is what the media do best, take something and blow it out of proportion. ;)

Therefore I assume that Poland is not close to swine flu panic just yet? ;)

Life / What are people in Poland REALLY saying about 'swine flu'? [41]

I've read bits in the media the last few days regarding 'swine flu' in Poland and, if the media were to be believed, Poland is panicking about it, mostly because of the surging cases of a 'flu-like' virus in Ukraine.

The trouble is, a lot of what is written is media hype. So what are people in Poland really saying about swine flu? Is it talked about much in homes, in the street, in pubs and cafes? Is it on the news often? Are some people panicking about it? Or is that all media hype?

I have a Polish friend here who is a journalist and even he thinks the media have gone wild with it.

Any thoughts?

UK, Ireland / What is the best period to go to work in the UK? [18]

What is the best period to go to work in the UK?

Probably the summer as others said although it depends where about in the UK you are intending on going.

You'll probably get work over the Christmas/New Year period in a lot of places, like Justanya says Christmas temps but not just in retail. The Post Office take on Christmas staff for example.

If you're coming from Poland to the UK you might want to secure something before you arrive because a lot of places are NOT taking on extra staff while they fight the recession.

If you have a specific city/town you're heading for people might be able to give you more help.

Good luck and enjoy your time in the UK. :)

Love / Why are Polish girls constantly ill? [166]

I think women should pay attention to her body and go to doctor quickly.

I think from the Polish girls I know this is true, they do go to the doctor quickly with symptoms and most often they are right. I find that sometimes myself and other Scots girls tend to hang off going to their doctor often to their detriment.

UK, Ireland / What is good about being in the UK? [140]

Please do! I want info info info!

Cool. I just spoke with my friend on Skype and she gave me a few reasons.

Her mother has given her more independence since she moved to the UK. She says when she lived in Poland, even though she had her own flat her mother always fussed around her but now her mother is more relaxed. This is a plus for her and actually when her mother visited a couple of weeks ago they visibly got on better than in previous years.

Language. My friend has had to learn the language properly because this is now her home. She's had good fun learning proper English and the colloquialisms of here and in Ireland where she lived for a few months.

The Polish friends i took to the UK couldn,t find any English food that they could eat....They thought it was all rubbish.....!

Interesting. Lots of Brit food is nice depending on how it's cooked. I'm surprised they didn't find something. Not even baked beans? ;)

My friend said food was one of the good things in the UK. Why? Because of the diversity of it all. You can eat food from any corner of the world almost.

Mixing of cultures. My friend said to take a look at her Facebook friends. So I did. She has friends in Edinburgh from France, Spain, Italy, USA, Canada, Norway, Australia, Pakistan, South Africa and Scotland. She met them all here.

2. Quiet countryside

A lot of my Polish friends spend their days off visiting somewhere outside of the city. They keep telling me of places to visit but forget I've usually been there before. ;)

What is good about being in the UK?

A couple of my Polish friends have said food and history. They explore both. ;)

Language / Jennifer - will people be able to pronounce it properly? [11]

Will people have trouble pronouncing the name of my friend, Jennifer?

Possibly for a little while but they'll get used to it I imagine. Is your friend moving to Poland?

People adapt to different name pronunciation though. A lot of people in the UK got/are getting used to pronunciations of Polish names. Just takes a little time to get used to the difference. :)
