Travel / Poland is becoming too expensive to visit. It is a nice country, but [46]

Price of train travel is lunacy (I can fly to UK for less than return train ticket Warsaw-Krakow

A return train ticket from Warsaw to Krakow is 99zl if you use the cheapest PKP option which can be bought at the time of travel. That's a superb deal. Try taking a three hour train ride in the UK and see what it costs you.

I just got back from Poland .... a first class ticket , one way from Krakow to Warsaw, cost me 107zł, which is about £24.

A return would be about double, so £48 is what you pay if going first class;

I fly regularly from London to either Krakow or Warsaw (not first class though !), and on average I pay £100 for a return trip.

Travel / Poland is becoming too expensive to visit. It is a nice country, but [46]

Everyday grocery shopping prices here are just becoming crazy, I really don't know how folk at the lower wage scale can afford to eat here at all. Electricity prices went up 30% in one go.

it's not much different in the UK .... people are struggling to make ends meet .... fuel prices going up, grocery bills going up ,etc ..

Things are getting so expensive in UK , which is why so many are emigrating to Australia, Spain, US, Canada, France and some even to Poland, in search of a cheaper and better way of life .... somewhere where the quality of living is much better !

Polands EU accession is a win win situation for Poland

I can assure you the majority are being sold to the new middle class of Polish professionals.

I totally agree with you Wroclaw Boy .... I was about to write a similar post :o))

the Polish wife and I have already sold our flat..to a German, and came back to the USA..where we plan to stay until your economy collapses

not too clever in the US right now .....

are you planning to return to Poland one day ? ...... I for one hope not !!

The Brits did not come so often for stag parties and all that ****.

Agreed ....... the stag parties do spoil it for everyone else ........ maybe they'll stop coming if it's too expensive :o))

I wouldnt go and never plan to go again

In shirt, screw Poland

That suits me fine .... I doubt if anyone will be sorry to hear this :o)) Anyone with your attitude towards Poland is probably not welcome anyway !

What is in my shirt? Tits bigger than yours, I imagine.

if you're a guy michaelp, then this is not something to be proud of .... quite the contrary :o))

Life / A Brit living in Poland (update) [14]

Moving home to a new country is probably one of the most stressful life experiences we go through after bereavement and divorce (or so the research tells us)... so I'm not surprised you sometimes may have 'blown your top' on certain occasions ....... I know I have when dealing with Polish red tape and the local councils !

Sometimes it feels as if they are all against you and you are being singled out for this treatment ..... when in truth everybody gets the same treatment, maybe the only difference is that the Poles are used to it !

I will complain and moan when need be but I will try my best too not put down the Polish as a nation.

I love Poland dearly .... but sometimes trying to get some answers or getting something relatively simple carried out .... is enough to drive a saint to swearing !

Have a good moan and complain as much as you like ...... but as you said there's no need to be derogatory about Poland as a nation :o) .... don't generalise .... be specific about what exactly pisses you off. You'll probably find most people, including native Poles will agree with you :o)

I know when I complain about something or other in Poland .... my wife , who's a native Pole , just smiles and asks whether I'm sure I want the family to move to Poland in the next year or two !

Have you decided to stay in Poland for good ..... or are you planning to move on ? I assume you're in Wroclaw ..... one of the most beautiful cities in Poland , and I don't just say that because my wife is from there.

Life / Easter weekend in Poland - does everything Close? [11]

Monday morning can be unpleasant due to kids running the streets with buckets full of water...

I remember those days very fondly ......when I was a kid, my friends and I used to keep the Smingus-Dingus tradition going here in London :o) ...... although most of the English people didn't know what was going on !!

We made sure it was only Polish people who understood the tradition got soaked !

News / John Cleese in polish advertise [30]

It was good in its time but looks very dated now.

Fawlty Towers ..... best comedy series ever !

It's one of the few comedy series one can watch over and over .... I never get tired of watching it ......... a classic where John Cleese is at his peak of hilarity :o)

The episodes are just as funny now as they were when they were first aired on tv !

I think the best one is where Basil goes completely crazy, and is in the hospital and says to the nurse: "My God, you're ugly!" haha, my favorite part of all Fawlty Tower episodes.

'The Germans' has to be my favourite also .... especially when Basil is being tucked into hospital bed by the nurse ....

Basil : My God you're ugly!'
Nurse : I'd better call the doctor
Basil: You don't need a doctor, you need a plastic surgeon !

News / Zabiega, Zientarski and a Ferrari [12]

Ironically, Zientarski was used to advertise car insurance in Poland for PZU(large insurance company), and always stated the need for safe driving !
Needless to say these adverts have had to be removed.

Life / I AM BLACK. SHOULD I MOVE TO POLAND? [107]

Hi Primo,

Have to say that there are elements of truth in the responses you have received so far.

Poles can be racist, as other nationalities can be; also there will be a genuine interest in something Poles are not accustomed to seeing every day.

The best advice I would give is to give it a go ..... expect all sorts of reactions and you won't be disappointed ! Unfortunately you'll get the racist crap , but you'll get genuine Poles who want to chat and hear about your culture and traditions.

One of my best friends is from Ghana, and he came to Wroclaw when I got married and he had a totally awesome time ...... most of his experiences were positive but there were a few occasions when I'd hear some nasty racist comments, although in these situations it's best to ignore the pratts, otherwise it might escalate into something more.

My Ghanian friend has frequently joined me at Poland international matches; in Wales he was the centre of attention .... Poles wanted pics taken with him as they said he looked like Olisadebe ....

Best of luck .....

Life / Babies names - spelled similarly in Polish and English [29]

Can someone please tell me what English name Janusz pertains to?

Jan would be John, Janeczek would be a young version of John; I don't think there's an English 'young' version of John ?
Janusz ....... not sure there is an English equivalent .... what would be the Polish equivalent of James ?

Life / You have to wait 10 days for a dentist in Poland (even private one) [15]

why every clinic i call to see a dentist there is a 10 days wait

I have never had a problem getting an appointment with a dentist in Poland privately ..... both in Krakow and in Warsaw.

Each time i have been given appointments either for the next day or the day after.

If you're still having problems i can pass on the details of a good dentist in Saska Kepa - they treated my 4yr old daughter who hates dentists and they managed to fix the problem !

Life / Why are Polish people cheap? [126]

why is it, that polish people are considered as low lives

Where do you get that idea from ?

Only an ignorant, intellectually challenged pratt could make such a distorted generalisation about a nation !

Why are the polski's always trolling the aisles at TK max looking for a 'bargain', the stuff they buy is really cheap, very bad fashion, to put it plain, stuff that no one else would buy?

You'd have had to be 'trolling' the aisles yourself inorder to make such an observation :o)

There's nothing wrong in buying cheap stuff - Poles will look for bargains as in many cases they are saving the money they earn to buy property/businesses back in Poland.

My wife who is Polish often shops in Primark & Lidl because she can make a saving, and the quality of the goods sold is very good.

polish guys are ugly, the woman - their monsters (big noses, no tits),

Have you ever been to Poland ? ..... probably not, otherwise you wouldn't be making such rubbish comments !

i would point out that i am male and from scotland

I've got nothing against Scotland ...... and don't want to get involved in a petty Polish v Scotland argument ..... most Scots I have met are great people ...... and I don't believe your comments are a general overview of most decent Scots ....

USA, Canada / Polish, American, Polish-American - what am I to you? [34]

Hi JJ,

I was born in London England and have lived here all my life, but my parents, grandparents and great grandparents were born in Poland - I have always considered myself a Pole who was born in England ........ my family here in England maintains Polish traditions and also speaks the language; my surname is Polish and since childhood I have been recognised as a Polak :o)

Although I speak English better now than Polish, I still see myself more Polish than English in many respects - I believe this has much to do with my upbringing.

I am proud of my Polish background, and have supported the Polish national team in all sports ever since I can remember ..... in 1973 I was at Wembley with my grandfather and older brother cheering on Poland as they knocked England out of the World Cup qualifiers ! ..... and more recently have had to endure Poland lose to England in meetings between the two countries on English soil and in World Cup matches:o(

I suppose I could be referred to as an AngloPol, hence my choosing the nickname Polanglik for this forum -

As for the type of blood I have running through my veins ...... it's 100% Polish .... red and white :o)

So what am I considered to everyone living in Poland, or ones who are Polish born

I think what's important is how you see yourself ? ........ do you feel more American .... or more Polish ? Although as most in America are immigrants and have their roots in another country, I suppose you'd class yourself as Polish-American ?

Real Estate / VAT on new flats in Poland to rise to 22%? [10]

22% VAT has been suggested on apartments, it was originally supposed to come into affect in 2008

The last I heard was that the 7% to 22% rise in VAT expected in Jan 2008 has been put on hold up to at least 2010.

I also believe this will only affect apartments bigger than 120m2 or houses above 300m2

We'll have to wait and see what transpires.

Life / POSITIVES ABOUT POLAND AND POLISH PEOPLE.... [119]

Polish people are very good at taking and 'borrowing' money from your wallet when you are not looking too. A lot of dishonesty and a total lack of common sense in financial matters. They work as builders but all their work has to be checked and repaired as the standards are not the same at all back home. They make good vodka but then they should not drink and drive. No wonder the roads have such a high fatality records, the worst anywhere Europe.

Michal .... get a life !

The topic here is 'Positives about Poland and Polish People' .......... go post your unwanted opinions on another thread ..... or how about another forum !?

'beautiful 'ryneks' ..... like in Krakow and Wroclaw; there's nothing better than spending a summer afternoon in one of the many bars/restaurants drinking a Polish 'piwo' with some Polish bread with smalec , watching the gorgeous Polish women go by :o)

Life / Local Poles taking advantage of foreigners living in Poland [235]

if the British start knocking Polish drivers for bad driving, why can't I knock the British drivers a bit?

so is that your only basis for knocking British drivers ...... retaliation ?

(one praises one's own, puts down outsiders).

it's not so much as 'praising one's own' ........ i was merely supporting the views that driving in Poland is more dangerous than England and other countries I have driven in.

I am all for Poland and things Polish .... so much so that I am moving to Poland to settle permanently within the next two years :o) ...... however if i find fault with any aspect of Polish life it does not mean I am anti-Polish. In most cases I am very positive about Poland ....... but when it comes to driving in Poland, I have to agree with those who believe driving in Poland can be very hazardous .. whether it be from the bad roads or the bad drivers.

My wife who is Polish born has always been of the opinion that Polish drivers are quite reckless and take unnecessary risks in their driving ..... especially when it comes to speeding, dangerous overtaking etc... so this negates the saying ...'one praises ones own, puts down outsiders' in this discussion :o))

Life / Local Poles taking advantage of foreigners living in Poland [235]

The standard of driving in Poland is far worse than anything I've seen in the other 12 European countries I have visited/live in.

I have to agree with you on this Harry ..... driving in certain parts of Italy can be quite manic also, but driving in Poland is very hazardous ..... one just has to look at all the crosses at the side of the road which signify a fatality or fatalities.

I have done a lot of driving in my time ... 27 years in all , and driven through many european countries, America and Canada and in my opinion driving in Poland is the most dangerous. There are more boy racers and lunatics on the road ...... much more than I have experienced in UK ...... unfortunately :o(

Work / Relocating to Krakow, Poland from England. How easy to find a job? [94]

Caley and Zion ..... thanks for the good wishes with the job hunt :o))

Work / Relocating to Krakow, Poland from England. How easy to find a job? [94]

Hi CaleyJags ......

Unfortunately our friend Zion is one of the most depressing and negative people I have met on this forum, and to be honest I don't take too much notice of his opinions :o))

I am in a lucky position in that when I sell up here in UK i will have a nice tidy bundle from which my family and I can make a good life for ourselves in Poland (Krakow most probably).

I run my own company here in UK and will probably continue that in Poland; i am also in the fortunate position of speaking Polish fluently and have good qualifications which I believe will be useful in Poland. I also have many contacts, family & friends in Poland so the transition should not be too stressful :o)

I'm in Warsaw next week, mainly for business, but also to catch up with some friends - what's the weather like in Warsaw right now ?

Caley and Zion ..... thanks for the good wishes with the job hunt :o))

UK, Ireland / Will Polish names eventually become popular in the UK? [53]

we have had asians here for many years do you see English people calling their kids Mohammed?

maybe not, but i read somewhere that if all the different spellings of Mohammed are taken into account, it's the second most popular boy's name given in England last year !

How easy is it to find work.
There seems to be a lot of English companies looking for people to work in Poland.

this was the original question ........ i'd be interested to hear people's views on this also :o) ...... especially in Krakow.
