Food / Cooking + Food Shopping Advice In WARSAW, Please... [10]

My Polish textbook makes a big deal about "picking up a shopping basket when you are in a shop", even if you have to wait in line first to get a basket. Doesn't say why. Interesting.....

Food / Poland's Summertime! Let's BBQ [79]

Fisz, have you ever grilled raw pineapple?
Its unbelievably good...and makes an interesting side dish. Peel and core a fresh pineapple, and slice into rings. Mix some sugar with the grated peeling of a lime. Dip pineapple rings in melted butter, then roll in the limed sugar, and grill. OMG it is so good :) Goes really good with jerk chicken. And a margarita.

Mmmmmm....

Food / Looking for a soup recipe containing cabbage, kielbasa and sauerkraut [7]

1 pound fresh cabbage
1/2 pound beef or pork
8 cups cold water
1 medium onion, cut and browned
1 celery root
1 parsely root
1 parsnip
2 carrots
1-2 celery stalks
4-6 dried mushrooms
1 bay leaf
6 peppercorns
2 strips bacon, diced
1 tablespoon of browned flour
1-2 franfurters or salami, diced
1 tablespoon vinegar

Cover cabbage and meat with cold water. Boil and skim. Add browned onion, soup greens, mushrooms and let simmer, skimming as necessary, for 2 hours. In heavy skillet brown bacon and add browned flour, adding some stock to dissolve lumps. Add this to soup and bring to boil. Season to taste, add some sugar if soup is too sharp. Add diced sausage if desired. Serves 8.

News / Polish/German/Russian relations [304]

I think that anyone who would use Germany's past as a way of boasting, must have severe inferiority issues. That is sad and so desperate.

Or maybe Bratwirst is just pissed off about the German condom thread.......

Austrians ARE Germans you dumb Polack!

You know BratBoy, name calling can get you banned on this forum.
I don't appreciate you calling G names like that.
You need to watch your manners.

Language / Most-used Polish verbs (and every-day sentences) [37]

Either Lisa or Telefonikita mentioned a book "1000 Polish Verbs" (can't remember who told us about it now) and I have looked for it on US Amazon but couldn't find it. I will try to look it up on some other of the other Polish bookseller websites. It sounds like a very useful tool, if I can find it!

History / What has Poland contributed to the Western civilisation? [69]

The first I heard of it, was when reseachers were conducting experiments with subatomic particles, and found that the experiment results could not be duplicated.

When the realization came that each researcher's expectations correlated with the results, there was some degree of freaking out that followed (actual scientific term there "freaking out" because it is quantifiable- insert winking smiley).

The very idea of "mind over matter" must have sent them spinning faster than an electron in an outer shell!

History / What has Poland contributed to the Western civilisation? [69]

I was fascinated in school when learning about atomic particles. The idea that the number and spin of electrons in the outer shell being responsible for colors and other properties of elements was incredible to me. If had had been sharper in mathematics I would have pursued a career in science. :)

Life / Irish and British people moving into my neighborhood in Poland. [63]

OK, I confess, I'm a big Erasure fan.

Heaven help you if one of their songs gets stuck in your head.....it will be there for days, maybe weeks!

"racing 'cross the desert, at a hundred miles an hour, blue savannah song"

UK, Ireland / 700 are arriving every day from Eastern Europe into Britain [50]

I hope all of them will be coming back, and very soon, to their native countries.

I think they will. Why? Because in the eighties when Ireland's economy tanked, people left in droves.

Then the government cooperated with businesses to enact policy changes that encouraged economic development. (I think many countries could take a leaf from that book, even mine). Now with Ireland's economy turn-around, people who left years ago are returning home. It won't be the same as when they left, but now there is a reason to work and live there.

I think Poland is very much poised to do the same. I think the country has to go through a "shake up" to get where it needs to be (you have to tear down an old house to build a new one in the same spot, so to speak). I have some concerns about the government's role in this process, because the current leaders are conservative, and a lot of change needs to happen in order to make room for a new nation. It is happening, but I think it needs some speed to keep people happy.

So don't worry, they will come back home.

Feedback / Moderators from different time zones [17]

Does Admin have a "schedule" for the moderators to extend forum coverage?
I don't know how you could really plan for "busy" times, since that could be a sponataneous event, or the result of a hot thread. I imagine one would have to spread out coverage to the extent possible.

There are how many mods-5, 6?

News / Why are so many Polish political leaders midgets? [16]

I dunno, maybe in some cases, diminutive men feel pressure to "prove themselves" and overdo it with agressive and controlling behavior.

I've heard people refer to "little man syndrome", but don't know if there's anything to it.

Life / Old Disease in Poland. [12]

By the way, can sb get diabetes by 35-40 from strong beer

Alcohol breaks down into sugar when metabolized. People with diabetes should not drink at all.

If you are concerned, see a doctor and get a fasting glucose blood test.
Diabetes has a way of "sneaking up" on you. Take care!

UK, Ireland / 700 are arriving every day from Eastern Europe into Britain [50]

npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=10767136

This is a link to NPR radio article called "Debunking Global Migration Myths".

It basically says that there aren't that many more people moving (still small percent vs. overall population) but it seems like more because there are more people on the planet.

I was surprized at that...

News / Some Poles burning American flag [299]

I think flag burning happens all the time....it makes for a bold statement for those you have an issue with the US.

I believe in free speech, so it doesn't really bother me. I take it as a comment that they don't like what they perceive our country is representing...an opinion if you will.

And I really did not like the backlash the Dixie Chicks got for dissing George. The vicious, hate filled backlash, in my opinion, was far worse than anything Natalie said.
