Genealogy / Help with these Polish names: Pelagia and more. [13]

I've been doing some research and came across some great- uncles and aunts. I am unfamiliar with some names and was curious if you native Poles had any comment.

Micejistous: We called him uncle Mahlon (mail-on)

Pelagia: We called her aunt Pauline

Alsose Laurrane, Poland: This is where my great-aunt Martha was born, I think this may be where my great grand-parents were from.

Any help or comment is appreciated.

Firstly, Thank you for your replies! It has been a strange journey to get this far.
This line of my family has always been a bit of an enigma. They claimed Polish heritage and have plenty of Polish connections. An example of this is that Lawrence settled in Krakow Wisconsin USA and is buried in the Polish National Catholic cemetary there. The immigration papers indicate Polish/German origin. Its been really hard to nail down a specific area. This Alsace-Lorraine thing really adds to my confusion. CRAP! Thanks again.

Love / What are your views (or Polish views) on abortion? [102]

Lets view abortion from a civil rights angle.

Abortion impacts 3 peoples lives, mother, father, and child. Why does a womans right outweigh these other two? Isn't it unjust for a man to have only responsibility yet no authority in this matter? Would'nt It be fair for a man who wanted a child aborted to sign a paper saying so and then be absolved of any financial responsibility? Why is it that when a man causes the abortion of a child using a pill or the "Falcon punch" he is a criminal, Yet, a woman can have a child aborted and it is considered perfectly fine?

what the hell is a "Falcon punch"?

It is a literally a punch or strike designed to knock a fetus loose from the uterine wall. It causes spontaneous abortion. I personally find the practice reprehensible, but I am not suprised that men have come up with a way to regain some parity in an unjust situation.

I dare anyone to give me a compelling argument as to why a man should be punished for this and a woman not.

In the same way a man or woman shouldn't lay a finger on another person.... do you know the damage this can cause someone? I'm guessing not, but if you really approve in that practise then I guess murder (for the woman) is like water off a ducks back. Prat.

Take a Paxil and re-read my post.

If you are so concerned about a womans health, We need to bring parity to this situation to protect the lives of women don't we? Its the only way!

Na, just someone who can have opinions without it affecting my professional views. At work I do what I need to.

Just follow'in orders! Be very careful with this mindset. Your humanity is in peril. I do understand the need for disassociation in medicine to a degree. Please respect and protect the rights of others who cannot perform the procedure. Will you? My wife is a nurse of 23 years.

I personally have little issue with abortion based on medical necessity, rape, or incest.

It appears that men have no reproductive rights in western society. Only responsibility. Sounds like oppression to me.

How many times are we going to go over this very old boring topic.

Until we get it right.

ShelleyS, You know as well as I do that your position on abortion is either
1. A regurgitated philosophy that you were indoctrinated with. or, 2. You know that it gives you power over men and without it you would have to be (gasp!) equals.

I had to laugh at the reaction that I got when I brought up the "Falcon Punch" That situation exposes the truth of the twisted logic most "abortion on demand" advocates hold.

You were probably mortified that men had come up with the solution to their own "unwanted pregnancy" problem. The most amusing part is that you can't make it a crime any further than assault on a woman. Because, to do so would require you to give the unborn child a human being legal status! And we know you can't do that or your whole abortion philosophy falls apart. The new generation of males does not have the same respect for life that the previous did. More amusing yet is that the uber-liberal abortion rights advocates are the ones who destroyed it with their philosophy. You cant have it both ways.

Life / Openly gay in Poland [245]

Adrian,
I am glad that you found happiness. I must admit that walking into a club where everyone is a potential sex partner is envyable odds.

Why be intentionally antagonistic to other cultures and social norms? If you really want to be progressive and edgy, Go to a country with Sharia law in place and FLAME ON!. THATS EDGY!!!

Maybe you could follow my brothers example and practice "balanced tolerance".

My gay brother asked me to be his best man in his wedding. An honor indeed. My first question was "Is this a religious ceremony?" He said "No, Its a civil ceremony in a park." I said, "Great!" Everything went off as planned and it was a wonderfull day. Here's the thing, My brother accepts and respects the fact that there are other beliefs and social norms in the world, He is not so self-important as to believe the world must change to his norm. He just lives his life and is happy. (and gay!)

P.S. When can I expect a formal apology from you guys for bringing HIV into the hetrosexual community? Lets face it. That was all you. We have been waiting for awhile now.

I suspect that you are TRolling, but, this might be fun.

I say bring on the gays!

I know a lot of gay people myself, I have nothing bad to say about most. It really is a matter of mutual respect. The "militant" or "obnoxious" gay types really hurt their cause. If more took the "Ellen" approach as opposed to the "Rosie" approach things would go much smoother for them.

Would it be bad form to say something like "pillow biter" or "turd burglar"? I just need to know the limits when I travel.

Love / Abuse in relationships (my first Polish girlfriend) [216]

bad American custom to say "liberalism" instead of "leftism". The first is freedom minded ideology, while the second preach for the oppression of the state.

Thanks for the clarification. "Politics of meaning" is in heavy play these days. It helps to clarify meanings.

I believe it and that kind of thing happens a lot. It's always what the women wants: they have total sway in the courts, in the office, just about every where else in western life. The flow of life is often dictated by their whims.

I work with a group of 22 men. seven of them raised their children as single parents, one got child support payments from the woman. The courts were disinterested in pursuing payment from, or punishment for the other six.

USA, Canada / Why Americans think that nobody likes them? [185]

It's probably easier to live there with all the time off and government goodies you get. (shrugs). Lighten up.

Exactly!

1. America has appointed itself the worlds policeman and Americans think that many people in the world don't appreciate all of their hard work.

You scream when we act. You scream when we dont. Western Europe is a debate club. Action is not an option. (shrugs, farts.)

I have relatives in Kosovo right now serving in the military. Where are you? (Look of disgust.)

USA, Canada / Why Americans think that nobody likes them? [185]

OK, I'll do my best to stick to the question.

We dont think that entirely. There are recent political campaigns that sought to instill that belief in us through the media. It was used as a kind of "peer pressure" tactic to win a select demographic group to a particular party. Most adults are immune to this tactic but some young people are still suseptible. Females particularly.

We do understand that different cultures, nations, etc, view what we do through different metrics. That doesn't change the necessity of our policy to us.

We realize that the leaders of other countries find it useful to demonize us. When people find displeasure with their own leaders/rulers their leaders quickly blame the U.S. and it seems to buy them time to smooth things over. (We are the monster under the worlds bed you know!) Think Iceland.

In conclusion, Americans for the most part are Individualists. It isn't that important to most if you like us or not. Hell, Its not that important to us if we like each other! America is an individual nation, same applies. We would prefer to get along with everyone, but, thats not realistic is it?

reaction like yours makes us dislike you and makes us say, we don't give a damn about your opinion. You guys are forcing us to react that way.

Its the collectivist mentality again. Its frustrating to them that we simply wont do, or think the way they want us to. True individuality is a strange concept for them. They have what is best described as a "hivemind" sometimes. Interdependence is their social control structure. I still love them though....
