Not only in stores! While waiting for my flight to Poland, all the Polish people started lining up 1/2 hour before they started seating! They flew here so they had to know that they had assigned seats and wouldn't get to sit in front :)
As for the lines in stores, I dunno, perhaps it might be explained using somewhat similar background

I had a hard time with that too, how close people stand when they are speaking with you, especially men!

Ok, I know what cygany are. Also the poor women who carry kids who look like they are dying in the Old Town in Warsaw just to get money.

That is exactly it - the general Pole who works in a shop IS a business person, they are the first line for their company.

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]
I went to a Catholic school in the states and the only time we had to change shoes was in the winter to take off you winter boots and that was already in the classroom. My son now goes and the same is true for him. He does have to wear a uniform though, only certain color shirt and pants.

Well, it really isn't my "requirements", it is simply a business adage, widely used in US based companies that "the customer know best" and providing value added services which not necessary, make it more likely that the customer is going to leave and say "that was a great place - you have to go there" or "I would never do business with them again" or in my case in a number of times when I had poor service, just leave and take you business elsewhere. Sure "it's their country" but if they want to earn profits which will enable them to make a more reasonable hourly wage, I would think they would break their ass to deliver - yes, exactly, like in the states.
It's their country and they have no duty to conform to your requirements.

Life / Polish movies - what they are like? [34]
I recently discovered that you can rent Polish movies from Netflix. I am American and my husband is from Poland and has been here 16 years. For me, watching a Polish film is fun and I helps with my learning the language. However, my husband HATES Polish films! We've recently seen 3 so far and he says he won't watch anymore with me!!! He loves the classics, Sexmisa (sp) Znachor, Janoszik (sp again :) but the newer movies he doesn't like at all.

Especially in Poland where "extra" money for things like charities is small and hard to come by for individuals to give.

Yes, it was very strange when I found this out. I'm not someone who likes to be barefoot and we even wear shoes in our own house (carpeted). We regularly vacuum and have the carpets cleaned at least once a year.
Actually, I am more uncomfortable when someone takes their shoes off in my home than not - it seems VERY personal somehow.
Do children still have to wear "special shoes" when they go to school? My husband told me that when he went to school,the kids couldn't even wear their street shoes in the classroom - that is VERY strange.
Do people in USA go in dirty shoes into someones apartment? What about carpets? :

Lots of Polish people swear by Skype. I personally don't like it but a lot of my husband's relatives use it.

Actually getting bitten by any dog in Poland worries me. I don't know about now but quite a few years ago my son was bitten by a friend's friend's dog and luckily I pack everything but the kitchen sink when I travel there as you cannot purchase over the counter antibiotic cream in Poland - you need to have a prescripton!
The only thing in Pl that worries me is getting bitten by a stray dog

The abundance of "organ" meat eatern/served, even to guests. In the states, some people may like/eat this but would never think to serve it to a unexpecting guest.
Also, I didnt' read the post from the beginning but I know a lot of people mentioned taking off ones shoes in a house/apartment. What was more strange was people pushing their slippers on me - yuk! It would be extremely unusual for someone in the US to even suggest that a guest wear the host's shoes, even if they are supposed to be only for the guests, still someone else wore them!

Hmmm, well maybe it's a new thing and they just don't use them yet. But to be fair, the last time I was there was 4 years ago and I know things change there fast.

You will need to have a reality check when it reaches 33 and you realize that most places (more now than before but still alot not) do not have air conditioning! Also, that ice in your drink means at most 1 small cube and at that, many will tell you that your drink doesn't need ice as it was kept under the counter where it is cold :). Have fun. Oh and did I mention that "anti perspirant" isn't a common product in Poland? Oh, there's lots and lots of perfumy "deodorants" that are put on in a noxious cloud but just serve to enhance that "eau d sweat" smell" that grown men wear so well.

Travel / US to Poland - the best place for tickets in July? [10]
When I called Amerpol to check on flights for August, they had seats for 940. USD from JFK via some swedish, switzerland,norgwegian (sorry but I didn't pay attention to that part) They only had 4 left so they're probably gone by now but it was by far the best price I've seen.
