Life / Does anyone know anything about Polish karaoke music? [8]

This isn't at home but anyway, so would any DVD or VCD disk work in any US computer cause I know when you try in a DVD player you need to worry about PAL and what region the player is programmed for?

UK, Ireland / Supermarkets in Poland: differences and similarities to the UK. [62]

Hi Holly,

Just saw this thread and thought I'd put in my two cents worth. Regarding trust in stores - it used to be much worse. I'm from the states and the first time I was in Poland was in 1994 and when I went shopping with my now husband, I was amazed that you HAD to take a cart when you went into a store. Didn't matter if you just wanted to buy matches - you had to have a cart. What if they were all taken I asked him - well then you just waited! This was in one of the first "supermarkets" that were in Poland, called Super Sams I think. So I not surprised that you can't take a "rucksack" (is this a backpack?).

Also, customer service has come a loooong way from back then. I'm not sure of the whys but customer service is definitely moving in a positive direction.

Good luck with your studies.

Ok - Thanks.

We want to have a Karaoke party where we live and I was looking at what was available on the internet and they are either VCD or DVD disks? What type of system would we need (would have to rent probably)? And would the disks they sell play in a US system.

Love / Being remarried in the catholic church poland after being divorced [16]

Many years ago we were in a similar predicament. I have an annulment from my previous marriage but was told that in Poland, you must be married BOTH in both a civil ceremony and then in a church ceremony - the problem came with the Civil ceremony as the Polish government wanted a statement from someone in government here that I "was allowed" to remarry but in the US - they don't provide such statements as it is not their business to "allow" someone to remarry! So we just got married here in the states.

Life / Level of English among the Poles? [64]

it should be on DVD in any rental video store or there is more on youtube. There are 4 DVDs with 7 episodes on each. I love it.

Help! In the US or in the UK? What is the name of the show?

Life / Level of English among the Poles? [64]

OMG - that is a super video! I can't wait to show my husband it. He went to one of these classes in the US and came back after the first class and never went back! BTW - can I see this show on the internet somewhere? I'd like to see the rest of this episode? Are there more or is this the only one with this theme?

On another note, many of my husband's relatives have taken correspondence courses in English language in Poland. Their grammar skills are better than mine but they can't understand nor speak a word of English!

USA, Canada / US wants Poles to visit, spend lots of money :) [28]

Are you a trueblue American or one of those immigrants who after a few years of living there .....start pretending they're natives

Hej, in case you haven't heard, most of the people living in the US have immigrant roots, it's just a matter of HOW MANY you count as a "few years"

Life / A small gift for a Visitor from Poland (she's a music teacher) [13]

She teaches classical music and she is like this expert player so I'm sure that whatever I'd buy she'd already have or it wouldn't be the right conductor or the symphony would be wrong, etc. But you're right, maybe some kind of gift with a music theme - they don't have a lot of themed stuff in Poland. Maybe some socks with musical notes (just kidding) :)

Yes it's amazing. We invited a friend to visit us this summer and she was able to get an appointment at the embassy in less than a week!!! And she got her visa no less, no problemu! Truly amazing.

Food / Polish Milk, Just not the same [54]

As in "fresh from the cow"? In most countries, it is prohibited to sell this. I believe you could buy this before Poland joined the EU but probably not now.

Life / Customer Service in Poland, what are your experiences? [106]

But not the whole world is like Amerikka... If I want to buy a sausage then I care If the damn sausage is good, not so much If a woman, who sells It is "cool".

Ok, let's not us America as an example, let's use Japan who has one of the largest and most successful economies in the world. What kind of customer service do you think they provide???

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]

Of course it's not their "fault", people do what they learn and what is their custom. I don't know if you've ever been to the states, but I'm sure that there would be plenty that you would find strange, weird, shocking and that you might even thing the people doing it were wrong or stupid. But they are opinions and if you are going to get bent out of shape over people's opinions, you will be a very crooked and crippled person by the time you are older. You take them for what they are and say, I never thought about it that way, or there is a reason to why we do it this way, or simply, Ok, so we're strange, but so would be the rest of the world if you visited there probably as well. I'm sure that I would find things strange in Asia, Africa or any of the other European countries as well. Things are even different from state to state here or from home to home in the same neighborhood. That's just how they are and the people on this forum are here for the most part because they LOVE Poland so you don't have to stick up for the whole country. Spoko.

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]

Poland is truly a land of horrors, where men stand too close, old ladies smell bad, and the roads are full of potholes. Plus children are required to change shoes at school - terrible infringement of their human rights...

Get the chip off of your shoulder - the title of the post is What you found "strange" in Poland - no one is making any judgements here, just that "FOR US, IN OUR OPINION" this things are unusual! Geez

Life / A small gift for a Visitor from Poland (she's a music teacher) [13]

aren't there any Indian reservations in the area?

Hmmm, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, Eastern States - no native reservations unless you count the projects.

Would it be weird for me to give her a new pair of slippers as Poles are so fond of wearing them in the house???

Life / A small gift for a Visitor from Poland (she's a music teacher) [13]

I noticed that while in Poland, people don't hang wreaths on their doors, etc, like the kind of crafts I make for our home so I'm not sure about that. I live in Pittsburgh so it really isn't a touristy type of place. I could give her a bottle of Heinz ketchup from here :).

And women in Poland are SO fashion conscious compared to here that I wouldn't even try to purchase any kind of clothing.

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]

We were flying on LOT??? I was there in the terminal so I know that there were plenty of seats! Everyone just got out of them to stand in front of a closed door when there wasn't even any airline personnel yet!

Life / A small gift for a Visitor from Poland (she's a music teacher) [13]

We are going to have a friend of my husband's visit us from Poland next month. She is in her 40's and a music teacher. We would of course like to give her a small gift. Poland now has so much that we have here so it is difficult for me to try and think of what to get her? Any suggestions?

No, not bad - just strange. All the Americans boarding were wondering why they were in line?
