Life / Questions about Lublin [39]

Private message sent to me from UKPOLSKA: 'You're the sad one my friend knowing nothing about Poland and basing yourself in Lublin with the same old sad British crowd who do nothing but complain about how things are so much better in the UK and never truly immerse yourself into Polish life here.

You even admit that you have been to a Polish village twice, in your alleged seven years of being here.... that is just plain pathetic.

The only good thing about you is that you serve as the perfect example of why I left my home in the UK and moved here 12 years ago.

Have a good weekend... I myself am going to spend it at a Polish village wedding of a good friend of mine. :)'

Okay, so now we can have this conversation out in the open. I honestly don't know what you're talking about and I don't think you do either. I think Poland is a wonderful country and that is exactly why I am moving back to Lublin permanently after spending a year in England. I have many Polish friends who I think of as practically family and I cannot stand it when people slag Poland off and yet stay in the country. Believe me, I've met these kind of people and David is not one of them and neither am I. And who's 'self-opinionated'? You seem to think of yourself as better than me in someway due to the fact that you visit Polish villages regularly. Well, good on you, son! Do you want a medal? You seem to also think that you know me - that I don't know anything about Poland, I slag Poland off and I spend my time with The Shoemaker Crew, whoever they are. Sorry, pal, wrong on all counts there. So you would call David a lech to his face, would you? Well, you know the way to Lublin from Pulawy and I look forward to seeing you meet David and tell him that. Hope you're having a wonderful weekend. :)

Life / Poor people / street children in Poland? [34]

There are a group of gypsy women (complete with dity, sleeping child) who beg for money in Lublin. Later on you can see them getting picked up in a Mercedes. I've heard they live together in a rather nice house. Not sure if this is true as I haven't seen for myself. I've seen them get picked up at the end of the day though.

Work / 2400 pln take home in Krakow - can I live on this? [10]

I used to have about the same a few years back. Good ways to have a good lifestyle on an average wage: cook (which you're doing anyway), walk wherever you can, do as many private lessons as you can charging at least 50pln for 45mins (after all, you are native). Do three things and you should be having a great time and maybe even saving a bit.

Study / English pre-school in Lublin [8]

additional information? In particular, I'd like to know how difficult it is to purchase a used car in Lublin. Is it difficult to get registered and insurance, etc.

Hi Sandy, with that I can't help as I don't drive. Lublin is very easy to get around by walking. :) But, from what I know when Polish people go to England, they just have to send their Polish license to the DVLA office and they check and issue an English license. Most EU countries do this. Hope this helps. :)

P.S. Very few Polish drivers have insurance so beware!

Life / Questions about Lublin [39]

Yes Red Devil, I totally agree with you.I can honestly say that Mr Poynton's a real genuine friend of mine who would never have a bad word to say about anybody.

Absolutely jamesb. And the fact that ukpolska hasn't replied shows that he must also agree with us. ;)

French nobility? Oh yes, I remember them - we slaughtered most of them at Agincourt. Ahh, good times. :) Magnifique!!

History / World War II - a tragic story for Poland and the World [489]

There are helmets on the entry to PF...take one!

No sure what you mean by this. If you mean that I should be prepared for some flak then, of course, lively discussions are great but the site rules clearly state: 'Do not insult or harass others, play nicely!' so maybe you should either abide by this or go and play somewhere else. :)

Life / Questions about Lublin [39]

Dave Poyton yes I know him and have known him for eight years TBH I wish I didn't, he is a sad old fart that stands in a nightclub lurching over women.

Actually, I've known David for several years now and he is one of the nicest guys you can meet. He'll go out of his way to help you and never has a bad word to say about anybody. I wonder if you would call David those names to his face? Hmmm, I doubt it. Instead you pathetically right insults about him on an internet forum. How sad.

History / World War II - a tragic story for Poland and the World [489]

Well, I read from cover to cover 'The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich'. It states that when Germany invaded Poland on 1st Sept 1939, the French had 100 divisions along the border with Germany. The british had 1, yes ONE infantry division. The rest were territorials or Home Guard. We really were, as Napolean put it, 'a nation of shopkeepers'. The promise to help Poland if Germany invaded was to bolster Polish morale as well as to bluff the Germans into thinking we really would launch an attack from the west. As it happened, the Germans invaded anyway and, due to the large distance from Britain to Poland, we were only able to make the odd equipment drop, which frequently landed behind German lines as they were taking territory so quickly.

I've had this discussion with many of my Polish friends about 'the Allies abandoning Poland'. I honestly don't see what more could have been done. One could even argue that Poland should have been better prepared and mobilised on a large scale, but this could have been used as a pretext for Hitler sending in his armies.

I think sometimes we British feel that we can't do right for doing wrong and every good thing we try to do ends up being criticised. Personally, I don't think the French have ever forgiven us for liberating them, as was demonstrated at the recent 65th anniversary of D-Day when Napolean Sarkozy failed to invite any of the British Royal Family.

Finally, I believe Poland is Britain's true friend in Europe as we can't ever trust France or Germany to support us when the backs are to the wall. I love the Polish stubborness to never stop believing, even when they're criticising themselves!! lol ;)

Life / Poor people / street children in Poland? [34]

It depends which city you go to. There are loads of homeless people in Warsaw, for example, but here in Lublin you only see the odd tramp. You have to watch yourself in the Stare Miasto as you do still get some groups of local kids pinching bags and stuff.

Study / English pre-school in Lublin [8]

I have lived and worked in Lublin for six years now and must advise you to contact the British Council. Their number in Lublin is 0048 81 741 86 24. Hope this helps. They obviously speak English and will help you to find a pre-school for your children.
